There is no fixed data total: estimate it from the aggregate bitrate of the streams entering AWS Elemental MediaPackage and how long they run. For a decimal-unit planning estimate, GB per hour ≈ aggregate bitrate in Mbps × 0.45, or GB per day ≈ aggregate bitrate in Mbps × 10.8. Add the bitrates of simultaneous renditions, and count both copies if redundant inputs are being sent. These figures estimate transfer, not a guaranteed bill or a measurement of YouTube viewer delivery.
Estimate data from bitrate and runtime
Use the sustained aggregate input bitrate, in megabits per second (Mbps), and multiply by the time MediaPackage receives the stream. The rules below use decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) and are planning approximations.
| Continuous duration | Estimated data per 1 Mbps | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | About 0.45 GB | Mbps × 0.45 |
| 24 hours | About 10.8 GB | Mbps × 10.8 |
For example, a sustained aggregate input rate of 6 Mbps is about 2.7 GB per hour, or 64.8 GB in 24 hours, for one input copy. This is arithmetic from the bitrate conversion, not a measured MediaPackage stream. Variable bitrate, protocol overhead, and whether a monitoring or billing display uses decimal GB or binary GiB can make observed figures differ.
Include all incoming renditions
If the encoder sends multiple renditions simultaneously, add their bitrates before calculating. For example, if the combined input is 6 Mbps, use 6 Mbps—not the bitrate of just one rendition—in the formula.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Count redundant copies separately
If redundancy sends two identical copies to separate ingest URLs, incoming network transfer is approximately doubled. At 6 Mbps per copy, the estimate is about 5.4 GB per hour or 129.6 GB per day across both copies. AWS says MediaPackage uses one active input source and switches to the other on failover; the fact that only one source is active does not erase the transfer used to send both copies to ingest. AWS MediaPackage input redundancy documentation.
Know which traffic leg you mean
“Data used” can refer to different parts of the workflow. MediaPackage receives an upstream encoder’s content, then dynamically packages output when a downstream device or CDN requests it. The output tracks depend on endpoint configuration. AWS MediaPackage v2 channel documentation.

- Encoder to MediaPackage (ingest): estimate from the total bitrate of incoming streams, including duplicate redundant copies.
- MediaPackage to YouTube (egress): this applies if the configured architecture requests MediaPackage output and sends that output to YouTube. It is distinct from ingest and should be measured as output traffic.
- YouTube to viewers: YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple viewer formats. Viewer delivery is not automatically MediaPackage egress; it is MediaPackage output only if the actual delivery path traverses MediaPackage.
Use AWS’s worked example carefully
AWS’s deployment guide illustrates the conversion with an aggregate input of 4.2 Mbps: approximately 1.85 GB per hour for one copy and 3.70 GB per hour with a redundant copy. The guide’s example uses binary conversion conventions, so it differs slightly from the decimal estimate above. It is an illustration, not a universal usage rate or a current price quote. AWS live-streaming deployment guide.
Measure actual MediaPackage output
For observed egress, AWS documents the CloudWatch metric EgressBytes, which reports bytes successfully sent by MediaPackage for each request. Metrics are published every minute or more frequently; an interval with no requests has no output data. Sum the metric’s byte values over the period you want to analyze. Do not use encoder ingest bitrate as a substitute for measured output. AWS MediaPackage CloudWatch metrics.

Choose YouTube encoder settings separately
For the encoder-to-YouTube portion of a workflow, select settings using YouTube’s current recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube lists, for example, H.264 recommendations of 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60; its AV1/H.265 recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. These are encoder recommendations, not measurements of MediaPackage usage. YouTube also says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so source bitrate alone does not determine total viewer delivery. YouTube live encoder settings.

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than to calculate traffic in an AWS workflow, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; its cloud service loops the video, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. See StreamNeo.
