To add Percy visual regression testing to an existing Cypress suite, install @percy/cli and @percy/cypress, import the Cypress integration in your support file, and call cy.percySnapshot() after the page reaches the state you want to check. Set the project token as PERCY_TOKEN and run Cypress through npx percy exec -- cypress run so Percy can create a build and receive snapshots.
What Cypress and Percy each do
Cypress runs the browser test and establishes application state: visiting a route, signing in, choosing test data, or asserting that a component is ready. The Percy Cypress integration adds cy.percySnapshot() to collect a snapshot. Percy then renders and compares snapshots in its cloud across browsers and responsive widths, and provides a workflow for reviewing diffs and approving intended visual changes. These are complementary roles; Percy is not required for every Cypress visual test.
Cypress’s visual-testing documentation, last updated September 20, 2026, describes Percy alongside local screenshot-comparison plugins and other hosted services: Cypress visual testing. Product-specific rendering and workflow descriptions are vendor documentation rather than independent performance findings.
Install and configure the Percy Cypress integration
1. Install the packages
From the project root, install the Percy CLI and Cypress integration as development dependencies:

npm install --save-dev @percy/cli @percy/cypress
2. Load the command from Cypress support
Import the integration from the support entry point configured by your Cypress project:
import '@percy/cypress'
The Percy repository README uses cypress/support/index.js as an example path, but projects may have a different configured support file. Put the import in the actual entry point Cypress loads, not in an unrelated test file.
3. Add snapshots at meaningful stable states
Call cy.percySnapshot() after functional assertions show that the page has reached the state worth comparing. For example:

describe('Account page', () => {
it('shows the signed-in state', () => {
cy.visit('/account')
cy.get('[data-testid="account-ready"]').should('be.visible')
cy.percySnapshot('Account page: signed in')
})
})
The readiness selector is application-specific: replace it with a condition that means the relevant content is rendered and stable. Snapshot names should be unique; if you omit a name, the Percy Cypress README says the default is the full test title.
4. Set the project token securely
Store the Percy project token in the PERCY_TOKEN environment variable, using a local environment mechanism or your CI provider’s secret store. Do not commit a real token to source control. The Percy process uses the token to associate uploaded snapshots with a project.
Run Percy locally or in CI
Run the Cypress test command inside Percy’s CLI wrapper:

npx percy exec -- cypress run
Running Cypress without the Percy process disables Percy snapshot uploads. Wrapping the test command and providing the project token allows Percy to create a build and receive snapshots; review the resulting build in Percy to inspect diffs and approve intended changes.
Make CI wait for the app server
In continuous integration, start the application and wait until it responds before invoking Cypress. Cypress warns that starting a server in the background and immediately running tests can race: Cypress may begin before the app is ready. Use a readiness check rather than an arbitrary sleep. Cypress documents options including start-server-and-test, wait-on, and the official Cypress GitHub Action’s start and wait-on settings in its CI guidance. Add the Percy wrapper and configure PERCY_TOKEN through your provider’s secrets mechanism.

Reduce false visual differences
A visual diff can reflect a real UI change, but it can also come from a page captured while rendering is still in progress or from inconsistent test conditions. Cypress’s guidance is direct: “Best Practice: Take a snapshot only after you confirm the page is done changing.” — Cypress, Visual testing in Cypress.

- Use stable test data and control time-dependent content where it affects the image.
- Keep rendering conditions consistent between runs.
- Capture meaningful pages or component states rather than every transient loading or animation frame.
- Use a functional assertion before the snapshot as an explicit check that the test reached the intended state.
Choose a visual-testing approach that fits
Percy is one option, not a prerequisite for visual testing with Cypress. Cypress describes open-source plugins that compare screenshots locally or in CI, as well as hosted services including Percy, Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io. Evaluate the workflow rather than assuming these products capture or review changes in the same way.
| Decision point | What to establish before choosing |
|---|---|
| Comparison location | Whether images are compared locally or rendered and compared in a vendor’s cloud. |
| Capture model | Whether the tool captures screenshots, DOM snapshots, or an archived UI. |
| Coverage | Which browsers, viewport widths, and page or component scopes it supports. |
| Baselines and review | How baselines are created or updated and how intended changes are approved. |
| CI and test data | How visual jobs fit the current CI pipeline and what test data the service receives. |
| Commercial terms | Verify current pricing, data-handling terms, and team-review requirements directly; they are not established in the cited Cypress guidance. |
Or skip the browser setup:
For a direct website capture rather than a Cypress-driven visual regression workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can capture a URL as an image or PDF; it does not replace Cypress test setup, controlled application state, or Percy’s baseline-review workflow.
cURL example, using the documented endpoint and parameters (ScreenshotNeo API documentation):

Troubleshooting
No Percy build or snapshots appear
- Confirm the command is wrapped in
npx percy exec -- cypress run; invoking Cypress alone does not run the Percy upload workflow. - Check that
PERCY_TOKENis available to the process and belongs to the intended Percy project. - Verify that
import '@percy/cypress'is in the support entry point Cypress actually loads.
The snapshot shows a loading or incomplete page
Wait for a meaningful page-ready condition and assert it before calling cy.percySnapshot(). A fixed delay alone can be unreliable if render time varies; prefer a condition tied to the content or interaction being tested.
CI fails intermittently before tests start
Ensure the application server is ready before Cypress launches. Configure a readiness check with a documented approach such as wait-on or start-server-and-test, or use the Cypress GitHub Action’s start and wait-on options.
Visual diffs vary between runs
Check whether test data, time-dependent content, or rendering conditions changed, and confirm the capture occurs after the interface has settled. Keep the snapshot scope tied to a stable, meaningful state.
Frequently Asked Questions
