A screenshot API can return an old-looking page because the screenshot service reused an earlier image, the rendering browser received cached website content, or the capture happened before JavaScript finished updating the page. A sign-in redirect or error page can also look like stale content. Check each layer separately: disabling one cache does not necessarily refresh the others.

First identify which layer is stale

There are three main cache and rendering layers to investigate:

  • Screenshot-service cache: The API returns an image captured earlier, without freshly rendering the target page.
  • Website or browser cache: The rendering browser receives a cached HTML document or asset from the target site or an intermediary.
  • Page rendering and data: The screenshot is taken before JavaScript updates the page, or the page itself receives old data from its application or service worker.

Before changing settings, compare the page state, request parameters, and response metadata for a capture that looks stale. Keep the target URL, viewport, locale, cookies, and headers the same while testing; otherwise, differences in the capture may have another cause.

Check whether the screenshot API reused an image

Look up the provider’s own documentation for screenshot caching, cache invalidation, and cache-key behavior. Providers do not share a universal cache parameter or purge method. For example, Screenshot API documents a cache option that defaults to true, a cacheTTL of 86,400 seconds, and a staleTTL of 43,200 seconds. Those are settings documented for that service, not defaults for screenshot APIs generally. See its documentation.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the provider supports it, temporarily disable screenshot-result caching or shorten its TTL, then request another capture and compare the output. Follow that provider’s syntax; do not assume another API accepts the same parameters. If the API exposes a cache-hit indicator, page verdict, or billing header, inspect it alongside the image so you can tell whether a new capture occurred.

Check the target site’s HTTP cache behavior

Even if the screenshot service performs a fresh capture, its browser may receive cached HTML or page assets. Inspect the response headers for the main document and the resource that supplies the changed content. Cache-Control directives govern freshness and reuse, while ETag and Last-Modified can let a client revalidate a stored response. With a matching ETag, a server can respond 304 Not Modified; when the representation has changed, it can send a new one. See MDN’s HTTP caching guide.

Understand what no-cache and no-store mean

no-cache does not mean “do not store.” It means a stored response must be revalidated before reuse. no-store is the directive intended to prevent compliant caches from storing the response. Neither directive should be treated as a command to purge every copy already held by an intermediary. See MDN’s Cache-Control reference.

Choose an appropriate policy for changing content

If you control the site, set response cache policies to match how often the content changes. Frequently updated documents may need revalidation, while immutable assets can use long-lived caching when their URLs are versioned or hashed. Changing the policy helps govern future requests; it does not prove that a particular screenshot provider has invalidated an image it already stored.

Do not confuse Fetch cache settings with screenshot API settings

In browser code you control, the Fetch API offers cache modes such as no-store, no-cache, and force-cache. They describe how that Fetch request interacts with the browser’s HTTP cache: no-store avoids looking in or updating that cache, no-cache revalidates a matching entry, and force-cache may use a stale match. These settings do not automatically affect a screenshot service’s browser. Use them only if you control the page code, or if the screenshot provider explicitly documents an equivalent control. See MDN’s Request.cache reference.

Wait for the page to render and verify access

A screenshot captures a rendered browser state, not just the initial HTML. If the visible content changes after hydration, asynchronous requests, or delayed scripts, the capture may occur too early. Use the provider’s documented wait condition, selector, network-idle option, or delay where available, and choose a condition that corresponds to the content you need. A fixed delay can help diagnose a timing problem, but it may be slower or less reliable than waiting for a specific element. Cloudflare’s documentation explains that its screenshot endpoint renders HTML and JavaScript, with wait-until and timeout controls; those controls are specific to its service. See Cloudflare Browser Run documentation.

Also check the final document status and redirect destination if the API exposes them. A 401 or 403 response, or a redirect to a sign-in page, may appear to be an old page when the real issue is missing access. For a protected page, provide the required session cookies or authorization headers using the screenshot provider’s documented options. See Cloudflare Browser Run documentation and MDN’s 401 status reference.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Confirm the expected change. Open the target page through the same route and account context, and note which visible element or value should be different.
  2. Check capture metadata. Record the API response status, capture time, final URL or redirect destination, and any cache-hit or verdict headers the provider returns.
  3. Request a fresh screenshot. Disable or reduce the provider’s screenshot cache using its documented control, if available. Keep other request settings identical.
  4. Inspect target responses. Check the document and relevant assets for Cache-Control, ETag, Last-Modified, and, where possible, whether a response was revalidated.
  5. Wait for the changed state. Configure a documented wait condition or delay, then verify that the selector or content is actually present before capture if the service supports that check.
  6. Verify authentication. Confirm that the final page is not a login, error, or access-denied view and supply required cookies or authorization headers.
  7. Isolate the changed section. If the rest of the page is current, identify the network resource or client-side data source for that section. A fresh screenshot can still show old data returned by the application, an API, or a service worker.

If only one section remains stale after a fresh capture, the cause may be inside the target application rather than the screenshot API. Diagnosing a service worker or application data cache requires examining that site’s implementation; a screenshot alone does not establish which component served the old value.

Common symptoms, causes, and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The image is identical to an earlier capture despite a page change. The screenshot service may be reusing a stored result. Check the provider’s cache controls and cache-hit metadata; request a fresh capture using its documented syntax.
The document is fresh, but a logo, stylesheet, or data section is old. A separate asset, intermediary, application cache, or service worker may be supplying stale content. Inspect the changed resource and its headers; check whether the asset URL is versioned and how the application fetches the data.
The screenshot shows a loading state or content from before an update. Capture ran before client-side rendering or asynchronous work completed. Wait for a meaningful selector or documented readiness condition rather than assuming initial page load means the content is ready.
The screenshot unexpectedly shows a sign-in or error page. The request lacks required authorization, cookies, or access, or it was redirected. Inspect the final URL and status; supply the required credentials using documented API options.
Adding a Fetch cache option changes nothing. That option affects a Fetch request in browser code, not necessarily the screenshot provider’s browser. Use the screenshot API’s own documented cache and browser controls.

What to compare when choosing a screenshot API

If recurring stale captures are a concern, compare providers on the controls that make the issue diagnosable:

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every screenshot API cache screenshots?

No. Screenshot-result caching and its controls depend on the individual provider; check that API’s documentation.

Can I force a fresh screenshot by adding a random query string to the URL?

Not reliably. Whether a changed URL affects a cache key depends on the provider, and it does not ensure that the target site or its application serves fresh content.

Can a screenshot show old content even when the screenshot service made a new capture?

Yes. The rendering browser may receive cached website resources, or the application may supply old data while rendering.
