The proxy endpoint and any required launch argument depend on your proxy and browser setup: Puppeteer documents passing browser arguments through launch({ args }), but the documentation covered here does not specify a proxy flag or a universal proxy-authentication recipe.
Configure the proxy at browser launch
Puppeteer’s launch options provide an args array for additional command-line arguments to the browser. Put your proxy configuration there, before creating or navigating a page. The exact argument must be accepted by the browser you launch and match your provider’s endpoint and protocol; don’t assume one value works for every proxy.
This example reads a complete browser argument from an environment variable so the proxy syntax is supplied by your provider or browser documentation rather than guessed here. Set PUPPETEER_PROXY_ARG to that argument before running the script. For example, the value must be a browser-recognized proxy configuration—not merely a bare URL unless the browser’s instructions say that is valid.

Navigate and choose what to capture
After the browser starts with its proxy configuration, navigation and screenshot capture follow Puppeteer’s ordinary page workflow. Choose the capture method according to the output you need.
- Entire rendered document: use
fullPage: trueto capture beyond the currently visible viewport. - A rectangular region: pass a
cliprectangle topage.screenshot(). - One element: locate its element handle and call
elementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if needed. - Image format: set the screenshot path and, where supported, the image type. Quality applies to supported lossy formats; it does not change PNG output.
For example, replace the capture line in the script with await page.screenshot({ path: 'region.png', clip: { x: 0, y: 0, width: 800, height: 600 } }); for a clipped rectangle. For an element, use a selector that exists on the page:

Do not confuse proxy settings for Puppeteer’s browser-management tools with traffic routing for a page opened in Chromium. The @puppeteer/browsers library and CLI document respect for HTTP_PROXY, HTTPS_PROXY, and NO_PROXY when proxy-agent is installed. That statement concerns the package’s library and CLI; it does not establish that setting those variables routes ordinary browser-page requests through a proxy.
Puppeteer’s page.authenticate() method is documented for HTTP authentication, but that alone does not establish compatibility with every proxy protocol or provider’s authentication scheme. Check your provider’s instructions for the proxy type, browser configuration, credential handling, and any authentication requirements before relying on the screenshot workflow.

Troubleshoot failed or unexpected captures
- The page appears to bypass the proxy: confirm that the launch argument is valid for the browser instance Puppeteer actually starts. Environment variables documented for
@puppeteer/browsersdo not, by themselves, prove that page traffic is proxied. - Navigation times out: check that the proxy endpoint is reachable and its protocol and authentication details are correct. Increase the navigation timeout only if the page is expected to take longer; a longer timeout does not repair an invalid proxy configuration.
- Authentication fails: verify the provider’s supported method. Do not assume page-level HTTP authentication covers all proxy authentication schemes.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: inspect whether navigation reached the intended page and whether the page finished rendering before capture. Try an appropriate navigation wait condition or wait for a page-specific selector.
- A clipped capture has the wrong area: check the clip coordinates and dimensions against the page viewport. Use
fullPagewhen the goal is the whole document rather than one viewport rectangle.
