For a self-managed VPS, DigitalOcean’s 2026 Basic Droplet at $12 per month is a plausible starting point for a 4.5 Mbps always-on stream: it lists 2,000 GiB of transfer, versus 500 GiB on the $4 plan. Amazon Lightsail’s $7 general-purpose bundle lists 2 TB, but AWS says Mumbai receives half the listed transfer allowance, so it would not cover the example workload there. These are conditional choices, not tested reliability recommendations; confirm current regional terms and calculate your stream’s actual transfer before buying.
Best budget VPS options for the example workload
A VPS sends one continuous feed to YouTube, but that outbound stream still uses the server’s transfer allowance. Viewers then watch from YouTube; their playback does not eliminate the VPS-to-YouTube upload. The right plan depends on the stream’s encoded bitrate, the provider’s quota in the selected region, storage for the loop file, and any transfer overage.
| Option | Published plan details | Fit for the 4.5 Mbps example |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | $4/month in 2026: 512 MiB memory, 1 vCPU, 500 GiB transfer, 10 GiB SSD. DigitalOcean pricing. | Not enough for the approximately 1.4 TB monthly example. |
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | $12/month in 2026: 2 GiB memory, 1 vCPU, 2,000 GiB transfer, 50 GiB SSD. DigitalOcean pricing. | Plausible listed starting point, subject to current regional terms, quota accounting, tax, and workload fit. |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux/Unix bundle | $7/month in 2026: 1 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 40 GB SSD, 2 TB transfer in the general price table. Lightsail pricing. | Not sufficient in Mumbai: AWS lists half the general allowance for Mumbai and certain other regions. Check the exact region’s quota before purchase. The 4.5 Mbps figure is an illustrative calculation in StreamNeo’s 2026 article, estimated at about 1.4 TB of transfer per month; it is not an independent measurement. Actual use varies with bitrate and runtime. DigitalOcean says additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB in documentation verified September 14, 2026; check the provider’s current billing terms before relying on that rate. Estimate transfer before choosing a plan
Use the encoded outbound bitrate, not the source file’s size, to estimate a continuous stream’s network use. At 4.5 megabits per second, the vendor’s example works out to about 1.4 TB over a month. Bitrate changes have a direct effect: doubling it roughly doubles the data sent over the same runtime. Allowance units and provider accounting can differ, so leave margin rather than selecting a plan whose headline quota barely matches your estimate.
- Check the allowance for the exact data-center region, not just the provider’s general plan page.
- Include taxes and any transfer overage in the monthly cost comparison.
- Confirm that the SSD can hold the loop media, operating system, logs, and any working files.
- Use a bitrate appropriate to the artwork and audio. A higher resolution is not automatically better for a largely static sleep-sounds video.
Prepare the stream and YouTube settings
YouTube’s official encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its guidance includes 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Select settings for the actual visual material and audio rather than paying for unused resolution. YouTube Live encoder settings
- Confirm the media and output settings. Decide whether the source can be sent in its existing encoded format or needs live conversion. A compatible pre-encoded file sent without transcoding should require much less compute than live re-encoding, but the result depends on the file, encoder command, and output settings. Verify the exact workflow on the chosen VPS before committing to a small instance.
- Use RTMPS and the correct stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Copy the key from YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup into your encoder configuration. Treat it as a password: do not put it in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or repositories. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Test before leaving it unattended. YouTube advises testing the setup and monitoring stream health. Confirm that the video and audio are present, the connection is stable, and the selected bitrate is within the plan’s transfer budget.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations do not establish that a channel is eligible to livestream or monetize a particular sleep-sounds video. Check current YouTube rules separately, and make sure you have the rights to both the audio and visual material. A VPS does not grant permission to use copyrighted recordings or artwork, and continuous looping alone does not guarantee monetization.

What running the loop on a VPS involves
A VPS offers direct control, but the creator is responsible for keeping the process healthy. The operational workflow described by StreamNeo’s vendor article includes storing or fetching the media, installing FFmpeg, protecting the stream key, running the loop under a service manager, rotating logs, configuring watchdog or restart behavior, and testing after a reboot. No setup was executed for this article; commands and service configuration should be tailored to the chosen operating system and encoder workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
- Storage: Check that the media fits on the plan’s SSD, with room left for logs and system files.
- Process supervision: Arrange for the streaming process to restart after a crash or server reboot, and inspect logs so repeated failures are visible.
- Monitoring: Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm the process is running. A restart policy is useful, but it is not proof that a stream has remained live without interruption.
- Key security: Restrict access to files containing the YouTube stream key and avoid sharing it when asking for help.
The evidence available here does not establish a VPS provider’s real-world stream uptime or CPU performance for a particular command. A listed uptime figure, where offered by a provider, would not by itself prove that an individual YouTube stream will never fail.

When a managed cloud loop is a better fit
If you want to avoid maintaining Linux, FFmpeg, logs, and restart monitoring, StreamNeo is the managed alternative to try first: it keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos; it does not stream from a live camera. See StreamNeo for product details.

Check these points before deciding
- Choose a VPS if direct server control matters to you and you are prepared to manage the streaming process, security, logs, and recovery.
- Choose a managed loop service if avoiding server administration matters more than controlling the VM.
- For either approach, verify YouTube livestream eligibility and rights to the music, ambience, and visuals independently; neither a server nor a managed host resolves those questions.
