Neither Google Compute Engine nor AWS EC2 is the universally cheaper or more reliable choice for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The right choice depends on what the VM must do, where it runs, the instance and disk you choose, outbound-transfer charges, and how you recover from failures. Price the same workload in both providers’ calculators, then test the actual encoder profile before committing.

What you are comparing

Compute Engine and EC2 are virtual machines (VMs) you can configure to run an encoder or relay continuously and send its output to YouTube. They are infrastructure, not turnkey YouTube looping services: you are responsible for the VM, streaming software, source media or camera workflow, process supervision, and recovery plan.

First establish whether the VM will encode a live camera or other input, loop a prerecorded file, or relay a stream encoded elsewhere. A prerecorded file that is already encoded may need far less compute than a live software-encoding workload. The stream profile, operating system, region, instance type, hours running, storage, and recovery objective all affect the choice and its cost.

Which provider should you choose?

Choose based on a like-for-like workload and test, not on a headline starting price or a maximum bandwidth figure. There is no established end-to-end reliability comparison here that proves one provider is the winner for continuous YouTube ingest.

Decision factor What to compare Why it matters
Encoding workload Source type, codec, resolution, frame rate, software or hardware encoding These determine the CPU, GPU, memory, and disk needs; looping an already encoded file is not the same workload as encoding live input.
Compute bill Specific instance type, operating system, region, expected running hours, and applicable discounts An always-on VM accrues runtime charges; there is no single 24/7 rate that applies across configurations.
Outbound data Target bitrate multiplied by actual streaming hours, route, pricing tier, and applicable allowance A continuous feed accumulates outbound transfer. The allowance and charge depend on provider rules and usage scope.
Network capability Instance-specific egress ceiling, route to YouTube, and sustained measured throughput A documented maximum is not a promise of sustained throughput to a particular ingest endpoint.
Recovery design Encoder process supervision, VM restart behavior, health checks, alerts, and spare capacity A continuous stream needs recovery from both application and VM faults; the cloud provider alone does not restart a failed encoder process in a useful way.
Architecture scope One encoded feed sent to YouTube versus transcoding and distributing streams to viewers Those are different systems with very different network and service costs.

How the two providers differ on cost and network limits

Google Compute Engine

Google Cloud’s Compute Engine overview, accessed in 2026, describes free inbound transfer and up to 200 GB per month of outbound transfer on its standard network tier; it lists premium-tier outbound transfer starting at $0.08 per GB. Those figures are provider-published overview terms, not a complete quote for a particular VM or region. Check the current calculator for the exact machine, region, disk, and network tier: Google Cloud Compute Engine.

Compute Engine documents an approximate general egress limit around 2 Gbps per vCPU, with exceptions, and lists a 2 Gbps ceiling for shared-core E2 instances. The actual limit varies by machine series and destination; achievable throughput can be lower because of drivers, packet size, protocol overhead, number of flows, guest operating-system settings, congestion, and competition with disk I/O. Treat those figures as ceilings rather than a guarantee of stable bandwidth to YouTube. See Google Cloud’s Compute Engine network bandwidth documentation.

Amazon EC2

AWS says EC2 On-Demand instances are billed from launch until stopped or terminated. Linux and several other listed systems accrue partial instance-hours per second, subject to a 60-second minimum. AWS also identifies 100 GB per month of internet data transfer out free across AWS services and regions, except China and GovCloud; usage across listed services is aggregated for rate tiers. Confirm current rates and scope for the chosen region, instance, OS, and total transfer in the EC2 On-Demand pricing page.

Compute, disks, and network transfer are separate cost considerations. The 100 GB allowance does not make a continuous stream cost-free, and the VM’s hourly rate alone is not the monthly total.

Do not use a viewer-distribution estimate as a VM quote

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS implementation guide includes a production architecture using MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront. Its example estimates $1,505.60 per hour for roughly 10,000 viewers under stated US East (N. Virginia), bitrate, cache, and highest-bitrate assumptions. That is an example of a broader multi-service distribution design, including delivery to viewers—not the cost of one EC2 VM sending a feed to YouTube. Keep those architectures separate when comparing quotes.

Estimate outbound data before choosing a VM

Start with the stream’s target video bitrate and planned hours. A useful first estimate is bitrate in megabits per second × hours × 0.45 = approximate gigabytes of video payload, using decimal GB and excluding protocol overhead. For example, a 6 Mbps feed running 24 hours a day for a 30-day month is about 1,944 GB of video payload. Actual billed transfer can differ because of overhead, restarts, and provider billing definitions, so use the estimate to compare scenarios—not as a final invoice prediction.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  1. Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec, and set the target bitrate accordingly.
  2. Multiply the bitrate by the planned stream hours to estimate outbound payload for the billing period.
  3. Add the same VM runtime, OS, region, disk, and network assumptions to each provider’s calculator.
  4. Check the applicable transfer tier and allowance for each quote, including any other usage aggregated into that allowance.
  5. Run a sustained test with the real source and encoder settings; monitor CPU or GPU use, network throughput, dropped frames, and process restarts.

The cost model should match the actual workflow. A single upstream feed to YouTube does not have the viewer-egress profile of a service that serves the audience itself.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP’s secure extension. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations below are YouTube ingest guidance, not a VM-sizing rule or a guarantee that the route will be stable. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps
2160p at 30 fps 30 Mbps
2160p at 60 fps 35 Mbps

These values apply to the H.264 recommendations; YouTube’s page gives different minimum and maximum ranges for AV1 and H.265. Do not transfer the H.264 figures to another codec as if they were universal. Keep the stream key private, use the ingest URL and key configured for your YouTube live stream, and verify the preview and stream health in YouTube before relying on the feed.

Make a DIY cloud stream recover instead of merely running

For either provider, the operational pattern is similar even though the VM, network, and billing controls differ: provision a VM suited to the encoding load, install and configure an encoder, provide a stable source, and arrange automatic process restart and monitoring. A VM being powered on does not prove its encoder is sending a healthy feed.

  1. Define the workload. Record whether the source is a live input, encoded file loop, or relay; choose codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and expected monthly hours.
  2. Select and price a candidate VM. Choose a region and instance based on the actual encode load, and include boot/data disk and network charges in the provider calculator. Do not select a shared-core or low-cost starter machine for encoding without validating its workload.
  3. Configure the encoder and YouTube ingest. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it, apply the YouTube-appropriate bitrate and keyframe settings, and protect the stream key as a credential.
  4. Set up supervision and recovery. Configure the operating system or a process supervisor to restart the encoder after a crash; decide how a VM reboot brings the stream back, and add a health check or alert for a stopped process or unhealthy output.
  5. Test under continuous load. Run the intended source and settings long enough to observe resource use, dropped frames, throughput variation, and restarts. A short successful connection does not establish that the profile will remain stable around the clock.
  6. Review YouTube policy separately from infrastructure. A technically continuous feed does not grant rights to music or video. Make sure you have the necessary rights to the material and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules for reused content before building a channel around a loop.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your use case is looping uploaded videos to YouTube rather than building and maintaining your own VM encoder, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it keeps an uploaded-video stream running from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.

  • One always-on YouTube stream per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and no quality tiers; every plan has the same product, with the billing length changing.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Choose a day, week, month, 6 months, or year; cancel any time. UPI and cards are supported in India, and card checkout is available worldwide.

Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.
