A Google Cloud-to-YouTube stream can drop frames when the encoder cannot produce video steadily, the cloud-to-YouTube connection is constrained or inconsistent, or YouTube detects an ingest or configuration problem. You cannot identify the cause from “dropped frames” alone. Start with the timestamped stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare those times with encoder logs and Google Cloud metrics to locate the failing stage.
Find which part of the stream is failing
Think of the path as three separate stages: the encoder produces audio and video; the cloud network transports that output; YouTube ingests it. A warning in YouTube describes what its ingest system observed, but it may not identify the upstream cause.
- Check YouTube stream health. Open YouTube Live Control Room and review the health indicator, error text, and timestamps. If the YouTube API is part of your monitoring, its health status may include
videoIngestionStarved, meaning YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. That points to insufficient incoming video, not necessarily to a particular VM, encoder, or network fault. - Match the warning times to your own evidence. Check encoder or streaming-application logs, output frame rate, queue behavior, CPU/GPU or accelerator utilization, and the VM’s network metrics around each timestamp. Look for a change that coincides with the warning rather than relying on a single overall average.
- Test one stage at a time. If encoding stalls or output falls below the intended frame rate, investigate the encoder. If output remains steady but throughput or packet loss changes, investigate transport. If both appear steady, compare the configured format and bitrate with YouTube’s exact error and current recommendations.
YouTube’s error list covers issues involving video or audio format, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe frequency. Use the exact message to narrow the check; a generic warning is not proof that a particular setting is wrong. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and error guidance and the YouTube Live Streams API health-status documentation.
Check the encoder and stream settings
Confirm the encoder is producing frames steadily
Inspect the encoder’s output rate and timestamps alongside CPU, GPU, or accelerator utilization. If you transcode or generate the stream on a Compute Engine VM, correlate those readings with application queues and VM network counters. A busy CPU or a queue that grows during the incident can indicate that production is falling behind; a higher-spec VM is useful only if measurements point to a compute or bandwidth limit. Google does not establish one universally suitable machine type for this workload.

Match resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframes
Use YouTube’s current settings table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. For H.264, YouTube’s recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 50 Mbps for 2160p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not VM requirements or a guarantee that a stream will be smooth. Verify the current table before configuring, since the appropriate settings depend on the specific format.
YouTube links frame rate and keyframe timing in its guidance and recommends keyframes every two seconds for the relevant settings. Check the encoder’s GOP/keyframe interval against that guidance; do not assume that changing bitrate alone will resolve an error about frame rate or keyframes.

Measure outbound bandwidth and network variation
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate and accounting for other network use, including a backup stream if you send one. A brief speed test cannot establish that the actual VM-to-YouTube route sustains the required throughput under stream load.
- Compare the stream’s total audio-and-video bitrate with measured outbound throughput over the incident interval.
- Account for other traffic sharing the VM or network path, as well as primary and backup streams.
- Review packet loss, latency, and jitter, not just peak or average bandwidth. Google Cloud notes that distance and intermediate transit steps affect latency and jitter.
- Check whether relevant VM network counters show constraints or drops. Compute Engine documents bandwidth accounting per instance and notes that a full receive queue can lead to packet drops; treat this as a measurable possibility, not a diagnosis without matching metrics.

Use protocol advice only for the matching Google Cloud path
If your workflow uses the Google Cloud Live Stream API, its best-practices guidance prefers SRT over RTMP when the encoder supports it, citing packet-drop recovery and forward error correction. That recommendation concerns input to that service. It does not mean every direct OBS or encoder-to-YouTube workflow can switch to SRT, and it will not fix an encoder bottleneck on a VM. Check which endpoint and protocol your actual workflow uses before changing it.
The Live Stream API’s documented input recommendations include 15 Mbps H.264 for 720p at 50/60 fps and 20 Mbps for 1080p at 50/60 fps. These figures apply to that API’s source-input workflow; they are separate from YouTube’s recommendations for the stream YouTube receives. Do not substitute one table for the other.
