If you already have a Versionista account, the documented way to add a website is to create an API key in Settings, then send an authenticated POST request to https://api.versionista.com/watch with the URL in the JSON body. Versionista recommends enabling redirect handling. New customers should note that Versionista directs people seeking a new monitoring account to Fluxguard; existing accounts remain supported. Versionista’s homepage explains that distinction.
Before you start: existing accounts and new signups
This procedure is for someone who already has a Versionista account and can create an API key. Versionista says existing accounts remain supported and require no action. People looking to open a new monitoring account are directed to Fluxguard. The homepage notice does not describe a migration step for existing users.
Add a URL using the Versionista API
- Create an API key. In your Versionista account, open Settings and create an API key. The API documentation says to send it in the
X-Api-KeyHTTP header. - Submit the URL. Make a
POSTrequest tohttps://api.versionista.com/watchwith a JSON body containing the requiredurlfield. For example, with cURL:curl -X POST "https://api.versionista.com/watch"

Versionista documents this endpoint as adding a new URL to be monitored. It does not create an account, and the reviewed official documentation does not establish a current click-by-click dashboard workflow for adding a first website. The API is labeled experimental and subject to change, so consult the Versionista API documentation if the request or response differs.

The optional redirect setting defaults to false. Set it to true if the submitted URL redirects: Versionista says it will attempt to follow the redirect to determine the hostname, port, and protocol to track, and recommends true.

Whether to create a separate site
The optional new_site setting defaults to false. Leave it false when you want the URL associated with the existing site. Set it to true to always place the URL in a new site; Versionista identifies monitoring the same site with different settings as one possible reason to do that.
Configure discovery and alerts after adding the URL
Find additional pages on the site
To discover more URLs, open the monitored site in the dashboard, expand Crawl, and enable finding new URLs on every crawl. Versionista’s tutorial says discovery can find up to 50 new URLs per scan and up to 150 newly found URLs per monitored site; the tutorial does not state a publication year. Discovered pages appear in email reports, where you can choose to monitor or pause them. Versionista recommends against automatically monitoring every discovered URL for most use cases. For typical sites, its tutorial suggests excluding images and stylesheets or JavaScript from discovery.

Choose summary emails or instant alerts
Summary email frequency is adjustable in Account Settings. Instant alerts are off by default; to enable them for a page, open its page view and expand Crawl. Account Settings also provides alert-content choices for text changes, text and HTML changes, or filtered changes. These alert settings are separate from adding the URL.
Watch for selected words
For notifications about additions or deletions of particular terms, use Focus phrases, entering one phrase per line. Matching ignores capitalization. This feature applies to HTML and plain text, not images, PDFs, or Word documents. Versionista also cautions that monitoring all changes and filtering irrelevant page areas may be easier than maintaining a phrase list.

Troubleshooting
- The API rejects authentication: Verify that the key is current and is sent in the
X-Api-Keyheader, rather than in the JSON body. - The URL is tracked under an unexpected address: If the URL redirects, submit it with
"redirect":trueso Versionista can attempt to identify the destination host, port, and protocol. - The URL appears in a separate site: Check whether you sent
"new_site":true. Omit it or set it to false to use the default behavior. - You cannot find the same API options in the dashboard: The official sources reviewed document the API procedure, not a current dashboard sequence for adding the first website. Use the documented endpoint or consult Versionista support for account-specific UI guidance.
- The endpoint behaves differently from these instructions: Versionista describes the API as experimental and subject to change. Check the current API documentation and interpret the response rather than assuming the request succeeded.
