What montage features matter most?
Before switching editors, check whether its controls match the style you want to make. A feature only helps if you can use it to improve timing, clarity or impact.
Pacing and motion
- Keyframes and speed changes: These let you animate properties and adjust clip speed for ramps, pauses or emphasis. Check how directly you can create and revise the changes.
- Beat-synced cuts: Music can guide a sequence, but cutting on every beat can become mechanical. Use rhythm to support the action rather than substitute for it.
- Slow motion: Useful for readable details or dramatic moments; judge the result with your source footage and intended delivery frame rate.
Effects and graphics
- Masking and tracking: Helpful for isolating or following an element, but the amount of control and ease of refinement vary by workflow.
- Animated text: Titles and labels should remain legible over busy gameplay and on the screen size your viewers use.
- Effects: Prioritize effects you can control and repeat. More effects do not automatically make a montage more engaging.
Audio and delivery
- When your capture setup permits it, keep game audio, microphone, chat and music on separate tracks so you can balance them independently.
- Check landscape and vertical delivery if you publish both long-form videos and social highlights. Reframing a landscape clip is not always as simple as changing the export shape; inspect important action and text in the vertical crop.
- Consider learning curve, platform compatibility and project handoff if you work with other editors or need to move projects between computers.
Will your computer edit gameplay smoothly?
A powerful gaming PC is not automatically a smooth editing machine. Playback and export depend on the footage codec, resolution and frame rate, hardware decoding, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and timeline settings. Variable-frame-rate recordings and separate capture sources can also complicate synchronization.

- Test representative footage. Import clips that match your usual resolution, frame rate and capture format—not just a small low-resolution sample.
- Try the edits you actually use. Scrub, cut, add a speed change, layer audio and apply any typical effects. Note lag, dropped playback or sync drift.
- Check the editor’s requirements. Compare them with your computer and confirm current details on the vendor’s site before choosing a paid plan or rebuilding your workflow.
- Try a proxy workflow if playback struggles. Proxies can make editing easier by using lighter media while you work; preserve and relink to the originals for final output according to the editor’s workflow.
There is no single performance result that applies to every gaming computer and recording format. Testing your footage is more useful than choosing by a “gaming PC” label alone.
A reliable workflow from recording to export
- Capture footage separately from editing. A capture tool records gameplay; an editor assembles and finishes it. They solve different jobs.
- Preserve originals and organize clips. Copy recordings to fast storage when practical, sort them into clearly named folders, and keep the original files safe while you edit. An external SSD is an option, not a universal requirement; choose storage based on your footage volume and computer.
- Select the highlights. Review the recordings, mark the strongest moments and decide what story or progression connects them.
- Assemble for rhythm and clarity. Cut around the action, then use speed changes, slow motion, effects or animated titles only where they serve the moment.
- Mix the audio. Balance game sound, voice, chat and music. Listen for clipping, masked speech and abrupt transitions.
- Choose the delivery format. Set the project and export for the destination and aspect ratio; check that the output frame rate suits the footage and intended viewing.
- Review the exported file. Watch it from beginning to end, checking cuts, graphics, audio levels, sync and framing—not only the editor preview.
If audio sync remains unreliable, variable-frame-rate footage may be a factor. Inspect the exported file and consider converting the source to a constant-frame-rate intermediate, then check sync again.

When to keep the montage editor separate from livestreaming
