For a standard-dynamic-range retail promo loop, start with 1920×1080 at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 5 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, Rec. 709 color, and AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps. Send the stream to YouTube over RTMPS. This is a practical starting preset based on YouTube’s published encoder guidance, not a guarantee of picture quality or uninterrupted 24/7 operation. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide the technical recommendations; ongoing operation also needs monitoring, recovery planning, and archive management.
Recommended OBS settings for a retail promo loop
These settings suit a typical SDR promo made of product shots, graphics, text, transitions, and music or voice-over. YouTube’s recommendations are platform guidance, not a tested preset for a particular channel. Check text readability on phones and test with the actual scenes and audio before relying on the stream.
| OBS setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 | A practical source resolution for product images and retail text. YouTube can detect resolution and frame rate automatically by default; verify the result in the Live Control Room. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Suitable for many mostly static promo loops. Use 60 fps only if the motion benefits and the PC and upload connection can sustain the higher requirement. |
| Encoder | H.264 | A widely supported choice for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for live streaming. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 | YouTube’s recommended H.264 rates are 3 Mbps for 720p30, 8 Mbps for 720p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are platform recommendations, not measurements of your connection or promo. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Keep it consistent; OBS notes this helps smooth transitions between transcoded quality options. |
| Audio | AAC, 44.1 kHz stereo, 128 kbps | YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and specifies these advanced audio recommendations for stereo. Make sure the music and voice are cleared for streaming. |
| Color | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR | This follows YouTube’s SDR advanced recommendations. HDR needs separate hardware, codec, and configuration choices and is usually unnecessary for promo graphics. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to its servers. |
| Latency | Normal | Lower latency can increase buffering and matters less when viewers do not interact with the broadcaster. |
| DVR | Enable or disable according to viewer needs | DVR lets viewers pause and resume the live stream. Decide whether that behavior suits the channel. |
Why start at 1080p30 rather than 60 fps?
For a mostly static product loop, 30 fps can keep motion and text legible without requiring the higher bitrate and encoding capacity of 60 fps. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Choose 60 fps when fast product movement or the creative itself makes smoother motion worthwhile and your encoder and connection can support it reliably.

What YouTube transcoding does—and does not do
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can select a playback quality. OBS’s knowledge base says YouTube transcodes all streams, including the source feed. Transcoding does not fix an unstable signal or poor source feed: the encoder still needs to deliver a clean, continuous ingest.

Set up OBS and test the stream before launch
- Prepare the YouTube live event and stream key. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream/event you intend to use. Copy the stream key into OBS’s stream configuration and select YouTube as the service where available. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password and address; do not share it or expose it in a recording or screenshot.
- Configure the video output. In OBS, open Settings → Video and set the output resolution to 1920×1080 and frame rate to 30 fps. In Settings → Output, use Advanced output mode if needed to expose encoder controls; select H.264, CBR, a video bitrate of 5000 Kbps, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Set the audio encoder to AAC and stereo audio to 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps. OBS labels can vary by version and selected encoder, so confirm the effective output settings before going live.
- Set color and audio deliberately. In OBS’s video/color controls, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR. Listen to the full loop for clipping, silence, abrupt level changes, and music or voice that is not cleared for the broadcast.
- Start a test well before the channel’s public launch. YouTube advises setting up encoder streams at least two hours ahead and starting an encoder at least 15 minutes before an event. For an always-on channel, use this as a pre-launch and post-change check: inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then check the public watch page on a phone as well as a computer.
- Test with the real material. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Include the actual text sizes, transitions, product footage, and audio; watch for unreadable small text, unwanted black gaps, distortion, and audio problems.
- Test the recovery path. If you have a backup encoder, YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during a test and checking whether the player switches to the backup. This tests the failover path; it does not by itself establish a complete redundancy design.
Plan for 24/7 operation, not just a successful start
Monitor the encoder and YouTube health
Continuously monitor stream quality, as YouTube advises. In practice, keep an eye on OBS dropped frames and encoding overload, YouTube’s stream-health panel and messages, audio presence, and whether the intended promo or playlist is playing. A stream that looks fine at launch can still fail later because of an encoder, network, power, or content problem.
Make recordings and archives part of the plan
YouTube recommends checking local archive files and verifying that their file size is growing. Its encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24-hour stream will produce one complete 24-hour archive: plan local recording, segmented files, retention, and any restart or re-stream workflow your operation needs.

Protect the stream key
Treat the YouTube stream key like a password. If it is compromised, owners or managers can reset it, but the replacement must also be entered in the encoder. Limit who can access it and avoid putting it in public notes or screenshots.

Consider power continuity without mistaking it for redundancy
A UPS may help keep the PC and network equipment running through a brief power interruption. Size it using measured wattage and the runtime you need. It will not resolve an ISP failure, software crash, or YouTube ingest outage; YouTube’s guidance recommends testing a failover path and checking archives, rather than promising uninterrupted service from a particular backup design.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health: Check that the encoder is using CBR and the selected resolution’s recommended bitrate, then test whether the upload connection sustains it. If 1080p30 at 5 Mbps is not stable, try the YouTube-recommended 720p30 rate of 3 Mbps and retest using the actual promo.
- The stream connects but text or product details look poor: Review the source graphics and phone playback, not only the OBS preview. Confirm the output resolution and test the real content; a platform bitrate recommendation cannot make tiny source text readable.
- Audio is missing, distorted, or unexpectedly quiet: Check OBS meters and output routing, confirm AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, and listen to a test from the YouTube watch page. Verify that the loop itself contains the expected audio and that levels do not clip.
- The player does not switch when the main encoder stops: Verify that a backup encoder is configured for the same stream and repeat a controlled failover test. YouTube’s recommendation is to test the transition; it does not specify a complete backup architecture.
- The stream key no longer works: Confirm that OBS has the current key for the intended stream. If the key was reset after exposure or compromise, replace the old key in OBS.
- The 24-hour archive is incomplete or missing: Check the local recording and file growth, then review the stream duration and restart plan. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a single uninterrupted full-day archive.
- The stream stops while nobody is at the PC: Review OBS logs and the YouTube health panel, and investigate power, network, encoding, and software failures. Encoder settings alone cannot guarantee 24/7 uptime; test a recovery path before relying on it.
OBS or a cloud service for a prerecorded promo loop?
OBS is an open-source local encoder: it gives you direct control over the scene and encoder, while leaving the PC, network, monitoring, recording, and recovery responsibilities with your operation. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists cloud-based Gyre for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video. That directory is not an endorsement of pricing, suitability, uptime, or a partner program. Compare local control, whether you need a prerecorded loop or live production, recovery and archive workflows, cost and terms, and who can access the stream key. Confirm current service capabilities directly before choosing.
