Which platforms can play together?
Mojang’s official FAQ confirms online cross-play and lists these supported platforms:

The list does not include Xbox One or PlayStation 4. That means those consoles are not on the published supported-platform roster; it does not establish whether they might be supported later.
So, for example, an Xbox Series X|S player and a Nintendo Switch player can play together online, as can players on PC and PS5. Mojang’s FAQ is the broad platform reference; Xbox’s store listing separately confirms Xbox cross-platform multiplayer and co-op within its stated capabilities.

What multiplayer modes are available?
The game supports solo play and co-op for up to four players, with both local couch play and online play. The launch announcement describes online and couch co-op, while the FAQ distinguishes the different ways players can join.
Online cross-play
Players on supported platforms can team up online. The game also offers matchmaking, according to developer Laura de Llorens in an Xbox Wire podcast transcript published September 26, 2026.

Couch co-op
Players can share a device for local co-op. This is different from cross-play: everyone in a couch session plays locally, rather than joining from separate platforms over the internet.
Mixed local and online co-op
A local couch group can play in the same session as friends joining online. De Llorens says the session adapts as players join or leave. This lets a household start together locally and bring in remote friends, up to the four-player limit.

Do you need a subscription to play online?
Console online multiplayer may require a separate platform subscription. Minecraft’s announcement says online console multiplayer and co-op require the relevant platform-specific online subscription, sold separately. Xbox’s store page specifies Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate for console online multiplayer. These console requirements should not be taken to mean that PC play has the same subscription requirement.
Does cross-play mean cross-save?
No such conclusion is established by the available official information. The sources confirm that players can join one another across supported platforms, but do not confirm cross-progression or cross-save. Treat those as separate features: cross-play concerns playing together, while cross-save would concern carrying progress between versions or platforms.

How do you invite someone on another platform?
The official material confirms cross-play but does not give a complete step-by-step invite or lobby setup procedure. It would be unreliable to prescribe a specific menu path without an official procedure. Check the game’s current in-game multiplayer options for the available invite or matchmaking flow.
