1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPass the complete page URL to your screenshot service as one encoded parameter value. Do not append a target URL containing raw & characters to the screenshot endpoint: they can be interpreted as parameters of the outer API request instead. Encoding protects that boundary, but it does not bypass the screenshot provider’s URL-length limit.
Why long query strings cause thumbnail requests to fail
A thumbnail request often contains two URLs: the outer URL for the screenshot API and the inner URL of the page to capture. If the inner URL has its own query string, its ?, & and other reserved characters must be encoded when it is placed inside the outer request. Otherwise, a target parameter such as campaign=spring&page=2 may be split into separate parameters belonging to the screenshot API.
Google Search Central says, “Characters defined by the standard as reserved must be percent encoded,” in its URL Structure Best Practices for Google Search. That guidance helps preserve URL structure; it does not mean that query parameters affecting page content should be removed.
Encode the complete target URL as one parameter
For a GET-based screenshot API, use a URL-building utility or a client option that encodes parameter values. With cURL, --data-urlencode handles the target URL as a single value:

curl -G "SCREENSHOT_API_ENDPOINT"
--data-urlencode "url=https://example.com/search?term=green+tea&page=2®ion=us"
-o thumbnail.png
Replace SCREENSHOT_API_ENDPOINT and any required authentication or output parameters with the values specified by your provider. The example’s target URL has its own query string; cURL encodes it for the outer request. Do not manually concatenate the inner URL onto the API URL.
JavaScript: parse and construct rather than split strings
Use the standard URL and URLSearchParams APIs to build the outer request. MDN’s URL documentation covers parsing and constructing URLs; URLSearchParams handles query parameters.
const target = new URL("https://example.com/search?term=green+tea&page=2®ion=us");
if (!["http:", "https:"].includes(target.protocol)) {
throw new Error("Target must use HTTP or HTTPS");
}
const endpoint = new URL("SCREENSHOT_API_ENDPOINT");
endpoint.searchParams.set("url", target.href);
const response = await fetch(endpoint);
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: HTTP ${response.status}`);
}
const image = Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer());
// Save `image` using your runtime's file API.
Set any authentication using the method documented by the provider. Avoid hand-splitting URLs at ? or &: encoded values, repeated parameters and other valid URL forms make that fragile.

Keep only parameters that are actually unnecessary
Query parameters may determine search terms, filters, pagination, locale, state or the page’s content. Preserve those that affect the desired thumbnail. Google recommends using as few parameters as possible when possible, which supports trimming known tracking or otherwise unnecessary values—not deleting an unfamiliar query string wholesale.
Check the renderer’s input limit and request design
Percent encoding does not make a long target URL short; it can increase the number of characters in the outer request. Limits differ by service and endpoint. Screenshot API’s documentation states that its url parameter accepts HTTP or HTTPS URLs up to 2,048 characters. That is a limit for that vendor, not a universal URL maximum. Check the selected provider’s current reference before relying on a long URL.
| Request pattern | Documented example | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Target in an outer query parameter | Screenshot API’s GET endpoint uses url; its quickstart shows cURL --data-urlencode. |
The outer request can grow long, and the provider’s target-URL ceiling still applies. Screenshot API documents a 2,048-character maximum for its url parameter. |
| Target in a path segment | Webshrinker Website Screenshot API v2 documents /thumbnails/v2/{base64-url}, plus an /info request. |
Base64 representation can expand the value. Check practical limits and authentication requirements. |
| Target in a request body | Screenshot API documents POST forms for operations such as comparisons; Screenshot API.org says its documentation supports JSON POST for complex configuration. | Do not assume the capture endpoint accepts a POST body. Confirm the exact endpoint’s current documentation. |
When choosing an endpoint or provider, verify the target-URL limit, whether it accepts GET or POST for the capture operation, where the target URL is carried, authentication, output formats, render controls and error reporting. A path-encoded route is not automatically shorter, and a POST option is useful only if that specific capture endpoint supports it.

Set thumbnail dimensions and capture behavior
Choose settings that match the destination for the thumbnail. Screenshot API documents viewport width and height, full-page capture, PNG/JPEG/WebP, quality, scale, dark mode and delay. Its page notes a 4,320-pixel cap on full-page height. These options and limits are specific to that service; check the reference for whichever renderer you use.
- Viewport: Set width and height for the layout you want represented. A responsive page may look different at a different viewport.
- Full page: Use it only when a page-length capture is more useful than a viewport thumbnail, and account for any documented height cap.
- Format and quality: Choose PNG, JPEG or WebP according to the consumer and the provider’s supported options. Lower quality or smaller dimensions may reduce file size, but inspect the output for legibility.
- Delay: If the page needs time to render after initial navigation, use a supported delay rather than assuming the first paint contains the final content.
- Dark mode and scale: Set them deliberately where available; they can change appearance or output dimensions.
Protect credentials and validate the result
Do not put a production API key in a public image URL or client-side source. Screenshot API warns that a query-string ?key= can be exposed in page source or logs and documents bearer authentication. Webshrinker documents server-side Basic authentication and pre-signed URLs. Use the authentication mechanism your provider documents, and keep private credentials on a server when the request originates from a public page.
After sending the request, check the HTTP status, response headers and whether the body is actually an image. Screenshot API documents a final-page status response header. Webshrinker documents HTTP 200 for ready images and 202 when generation is still underway, along with error codes. Handle asynchronous responses and provider-specific errors according to that API’s instructions rather than treating every successful HTTP response as a completed image.

A resized thumbnail is useful for assessing layout and page state, but it may not preserve exact text characters. Screenshot API notes this limitation and says its capture endpoint can return page text alongside the image. Use the text response or the original page when exact wording matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common failures
- The API reports a missing or malformed target URL: Check that the entire inner URL is passed as one parameter value and that the client encodes it. In cURL, use
--data-urlencode; in JavaScript, set the value throughURLSearchParams. - The captured page is missing filters, pagination or other state: Confirm the original target URL retains every query parameter that affects the page. Do not discard the query string to make the request shorter.
- The provider rejects the URL as too long: Compare the complete target URL against that provider’s documented limit. Encoding prevents parameter-boundary mistakes; it does not evade the ceiling. Look for a supported POST body or path-encoded endpoint, or shorten only parameters confirmed to be unnecessary.
- A path-encoded URL is still rejected: Base64 can increase the represented length. Check that API’s own limits and authentication requirements.
- The response is not an image: Check the status code and documented headers or error body. A provider may return an error or an in-progress response such as Webshrinker’s documented 202 rather than a ready image.
- The thumbnail’s text looks wrong or unreadable: Resizing can make characters hard to distinguish. Use the original page or a provider’s text-returning option for exact text rather than treating the thumbnail as a transcript.
- A key appears in source or logs: Remove the key from public query strings and rotate it if it has been exposed. Switch to the provider’s documented server-side or otherwise protected authentication.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Send a GET request with the full target URL as a parameter; its endpoint handles the request as a screenshot capture. For example, cURL encodes the nested URL with --data-urlencode:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://example.com/search?term=green+tea&page=2®ion=us
-o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does percent-encoding shorten a long target URL?
No. It keeps the target URL’s reserved characters within one outer parameter value, but the encoded request may be longer.

Should I remove every query parameter before making a thumbnail?
No. Remove only parameters you know are unnecessary; filters, page numbers, locale and other values can change what the page displays.
Is 2,048 characters the maximum URL length for screenshot APIs?
No. That is Screenshot API’s documented limit for its own `url` parameter. Limits and accepted request formats vary by provider.
