If a screenshot shows a denial page, waiting longer or switching browsers will not necessarily help. First identify what the browser actually returned: an access challenge, a timeout, an unfinished render, or a page missing lazy-loaded content. Then choose a permitted fix—adjust capture timing, test another browser engine, use an authorized session, or use a screenshot service. None guarantees access to a site that restricts it.
What “headless Chrome is blocked” can mean
The phrase describes different problems that call for different responses. A thumbnail of a challenge or denial page is not the same failure as a screenshot taken before the page finishes rendering.
- Explicit denial or challenge: The page itself reports restricted access or presents a verification step. Treat that as an access restriction, not a rendering delay.
- Navigation timeout: The browser did not reach the configured navigation condition in time. A slow or continuously active page may be involved; the timeout alone does not establish why navigation stalled.
- Incomplete rendering: The page loaded, but its JavaScript-driven content was not ready when the screenshot was taken.
- Missing lazy-loaded material: The initial viewport appears, while images or other content farther down the page have not loaded because they are triggered by scrolling.
Inspect the returned page or screenshot before changing settings. Where available, check the navigation result and page content as well as the image. There is no universal diagnostic that identifies every site’s blocking implementation.
Try an authorized local capture first
Browser automation tools can capture pages without a separate screenshot service. Playwright documents a common Page screenshot API with Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit examples; Puppeteer documents screenshots with Chrome; and Chrome for Developers documents a command-line capture flag. Use a local method when you want control over the browser and can maintain its installation.

Test another Playwright engine for compatibility
If Chromium returns an unexpected result, try Firefox or WebKit as a compatibility test. An engine switch can reveal differences in rendering or site compatibility, but Playwright does not promise that it will overcome an access restriction.

Wait for the page content that matters
When evidence points to rendering delay rather than denial, wait for a page-specific ready signal if the site provides one. Puppeteer’s screenshot example uses waitUntil: 'networkidle2'; that is a documented example, not a universal condition. Pages with polling, analytics, or persistent requests may not become idle in a useful way, while a page can appear visually ready before all network activity stops.

Capture a thumbnail from Chrome’s command line
Chrome for Developers documents the --screenshot flag: “The --screenshot flag takes a screenshot of the target page and saves it as screenshot.png in the current working directory.” A basic capture looks like this:

Capture full pages and lazy-loaded content
A viewport screenshot only covers what is visible in the browser viewport. Full-page capture can include content below it, but lazy-loaded assets may not appear unless scrolling triggers their loading. Browserless documents full-page screenshots, selector captures, viewport settings, and a scrollPage option for triggering lazy loading. These are capture controls, not proof of permission to access the page.
- Use a full-page option when the thumbnail or archive image needs the entire document rather than just the first screen.
- Use a selector-based capture when only one card, chart, or page region is needed.
- Set the viewport explicitly so thumbnail dimensions and responsive layout are predictable.
- For lazy content, scroll through the relevant page area before capture, then verify the resulting image.

Choose a method based on control and operating burden
Local browser automation gives you direct control over the engine and capture code, but you must install and maintain browser infrastructure. A hosted screenshot API avoids managing that infrastructure, but requires you to consider authentication, data handling, cost, and whether the target site permits the capture. Browserless documents an HTTP screenshot endpoint and a Puppeteer connection example; the available documentation does not establish current pricing or independent comparative performance. Check vendor terms and current documentation before choosing a hosted service.
Whichever method you use, confirm that the site permits the requested access. If the page requires authorization, use a valid authorized login or session, or ask the site owner for permission. Do not attempt to evade access controls or solve a CAPTCHA to obtain a thumbnail.
