Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn a macOS app, load the page in a WKWebView, then call pdf(configuration:) to get PDF data asynchronously. Use createPDF(configuration:completionHandler:) for a completion-handler workflow, or printOperation(with:) when you want WebKit’s AppKit print operation instead. Apple’s APIs define how to request the output, but you should validate pagination and layout using your target macOS SDK and the pages your app needs to export.
Choose the right WebKit PDF path
WebKit offers two approaches, depending on whether your app needs PDF data or a print interaction:
| Goal | API | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Save or otherwise handle PDF bytes in your app | pdf(configuration:) |
An asynchronous method that generates PDF data from the web view. Apple’s API reference documents the result and configuration. |
| Use a completion handler to receive generated PDF data | createPDF(configuration:completionHandler:) |
A completion-handler form that returns PDF data or an error. See Apple’s WKWebView documentation. |
| Print the web view contents | printOperation(with:) |
An NSPrintOperation for printing; the method may return nil if printing is unsupported. See Apple’s API reference. |
For a file-export feature, use a PDF-data method and handle the resulting data in your app’s file workflow. For a print-oriented feature, use the print operation and account for its documented possibility of being unavailable.
Load the webpage before capturing it
Create or obtain a WKWebView, load the desired page, and only start PDF generation once the content is ready for your app’s purpose. WKWebView supports remote requests, local files, and HTML strings; it is Apple’s native view for interactive web content on macOS. Apple says it replaces the older WebView class on macOS 10.10 and later. Check availability against the SDK and deployment target you actually build with. Apple’s overview documents the view and its loading capabilities.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Generate PDF data asynchronously
The async API returns PDF data from the web view. WKPDFConfiguration specifies the portion of the web view captured; it does not, in the cited API description, establish universal page-size, margin, or pagination behavior.
import WebKit
func makePDF(from webView: WKWebView) async throws -> Data {
let configuration = WKPDFConfiguration()
return try await webView.pdf(configuration: configuration)
}
Once you have the Data, writing it to a URL or presenting a save dialog is your app’s separate file-handling step. Handle thrown errors in the caller and avoid blocking the main thread while waiting for generation.

Use the completion-handler API when it suits your app
If your surrounding code is callback-based, use createPDF(configuration:completionHandler:) and process the returned data or error in its completion handler.
import WebKit
func makePDFWithCompletionHandler(from webView: WKWebView,
completion: @escaping (Result<Data, Error>) -> Void) {
let configuration = WKPDFConfiguration()
webView.createPDF(configuration: configuration) { result in
switch result {
case .success(let data):
completion(.success(data))
case .failure(let error):
completion(.failure(error))
}
}
}
Both PDF-data methods produce data; choose the async form for async/await code and the completion-handler form for callback-oriented code. Confirm method signatures and availability with the SDK used by your project.

Use WebKit’s print operation for a print flow
When the user’s goal is printing rather than obtaining bytes for your own export flow, ask the web view for an NSPrintOperation. The method can return nil, so handle that case before starting or presenting the operation.
import AppKit
import WebKit
func printWebView(_ webView: WKWebView) {
guard let operation = webView.printOperation(with: NSPrintInfo.shared) else {
// Printing is unsupported for this web view in this context.
return
}
operation.run()
}
Apple describes the returned object as the operation to use when printing the web view contents. The exact print UI and output settings belong to the AppKit print workflow; do not assume this route is interchangeable with directly receiving PDF data.

Validate layout with representative pages
PDF generation can expose layout problems that are not obvious in the interactive window. Test the actual pages and target macOS environment rather than assuming a consistent cross-version result.
- Check short and long pages, including content that extends below the initially visible viewport.
- Verify that images and dynamically inserted content have loaded before requesting the PDF.
- Inspect page breaks, print styles, clipped or overflowing elements, and any blank output.
- Confirm the output matches the page portion intended by your
WKPDFConfiguration. - Repeat checks when changing the target SDK, macOS version, or source pages.
The cited Apple documentation establishes the API purpose and configuration role, not exhaustive cross-version guarantees for pagination, paper size, margins, or rendering.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| PDF output omits content or captures an unexpected portion | The chosen configuration does not represent the portion you intend to capture. | Review WKPDFConfiguration and inspect the output with both short and long pages. |
| Images or page content are missing | Capture began before the page finished loading its assets or dynamic content. | Wait for the page state your application requires before calling the PDF API; verify with pages that load content asynchronously. |
| The async call fails | PDF generation returned an error, or the web view is not in a suitable state. | Propagate and handle the thrown error; test after a successful page load and record enough context to diagnose the failing page. |
printOperation(with:) returns nil |
Printing is unsupported in the current context, as Apple documents. | Handle the nil result and offer an appropriate alternative, such as the PDF-data path when the app needs an export rather than a print operation. |
| Page breaks or margins differ from expectations | Layout can depend on the page, print styles, configuration, and target environment; the cited API references do not promise identical pagination across versions. | Test representative documents on the macOS and SDK versions you support, then adjust the webpage’s print styles or app workflow as needed. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot or PDF from a URL without building a WKWebView flow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and PDF output. Its capture can accept cookie and consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status.
For a screenshot, this cURL example saves a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options, including PDF output. The same endpoint can be called from Python or Node.js:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for the free plan.
