To embed web fonts in an HTML-to-PDF file, make the font files reachable by the renderer, declare them with @font-face, and wait for the fonts to load before creating the PDF. In WeasyPrint, configure fonts with FontConfiguration and pass that configuration to both the CSS and write_pdf(); its API documentation says fonts are embedded and subset by default. With Playwright, remember that PDF generation uses print styles by default, which may affect the page’s appearance.
Use WeasyPrint to embed a web font
WeasyPrint’s documented workflow supports CSS @font-face rules and a FontConfiguration passed to both the stylesheet and PDF-writing call. The font URL must be accessible from the machine running the conversion. Replace the example font URL and family below with a font file and CSS family you are licensed and able to use.

Declare the weights and styles your document actually uses; if the requested face is unavailable or does not match, a fallback may be used. WeasyPrint’s API documentation says fonts are automatically embedded in PDFs and subset by default to include only glyphs used in the PDF. Check the installed WeasyPrint version and deployment dependencies for the font format and URL behavior you rely on.
Use a local HTML file or stylesheet
If your markup and CSS are in files, pass a file path or URL to HTML and use a stylesheet loaded from a suitable path. Relative font URLs must resolve from the stylesheet or document base used by the renderer. Confirm that the conversion process—not just your desktop browser—can access those paths.

Use Playwright when you need browser rendering
Playwright’s page.pdf() generates a PDF using print CSS media by default. If the page should look like its screen rendering, explicitly emulate screen media. The example below waits for the browser’s font set to finish loading before calling page.pdf(); verify the result in your target environment, especially when fonts load from remote servers.

Choose a renderer for the document you have
The documentation reviewed for this guide establishes different capabilities, not a performance ranking or head-to-head test. Choose based on the rendering behavior and deployment controls your documents require.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect fonts
- Text is missing or appears as squares: check that the font is installed or correctly referenced, that the font URL is reachable from the renderer, and that the font file contains the needed glyphs.
- The PDF uses a fallback face: compare the CSS
font-family,font-weight, andfont-stylewith the matching@font-facedeclaration. Confirm that the relevant face loaded rather than relying on the declaration alone. - A remote font works locally but not on the server: check network access, certificate validation, URL permissions, and any proxy or firewall rules from the rendering process’s environment.
- The PDF looks different from the browser: with Playwright, check whether print media is applying different CSS. Emulate screen media only if screen styling is the intended output.
- Some characters render incorrectly: inspect representative glyphs in the generated PDF and confirm the selected font supports them. Font subsetting includes used glyphs, so the face still needs coverage for the characters present.
- Page breaks or margins are wrong: inspect the renderer’s page rules and PDF options, then verify the generated file in the reader and print workflow that matter to you.
Protect files and network access in server-side conversion
WeasyPrint documents that HTML and CSS can access local files through file:// URLs. When converting untrusted HTML or CSS, treat document content, stylesheets, and referenced assets as inputs that need access controls. WeasyPrint’s guide recommends sandboxing access to trusted files and using a custom URL fetcher to block or filter protocols and paths. Also consider which remote hosts the renderer is allowed to contact; otherwise, a document may request resources beyond the intended font files.
