Neither a Raspberry Pi 5 nor a cloud VM has a universal lowest monthly cost. A Pi shifts spending toward hardware, electricity and your home connection; a VM adds recurring compute charges and potentially substantial outbound-transfer costs. The answer depends on your stream’s bitrate, local power price, hardware you already own and the VM’s regional billing rules.
For an always-on YouTube stream without a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a video or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live from the cloud.
What a 24/7 stream costs: separate the one-time and recurring expenses
Compare costs over a defined period, such as the first year and each year after. Include the hardware you must buy, accessories, incremental electricity and internet costs for a Pi; for a VM, include compute, outbound data and any necessary storage, IP or software charges. A headline VM price is not necessarily the full bill.
| Cost component | Raspberry Pi 5 at home | Cloud VM |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Board and any required boot media, suitable power supply and cooling. A complete build price is not established here. | Usually no local streaming computer purchase is required; any setup-specific charges depend on the provider and configuration. |
| Recurring compute or electricity | Measured wall power and your electricity rate determine the incremental power bill. | Instance price depends on plan, region and billing; additional compute may be needed for the workload. |
| Network transfer | Uses your home upload connection and may affect your broadband plan or bill. | Outbound transfer allowance and overage rules can materially change the total. |
| Operations | You maintain the device, software, network and recovery process. | You maintain the VM and streaming software, and still need a plan for reconnects and YouTube stream restarts. |
For a Pi, estimate monthly electricity as: measured average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × days × your local currency per kWh. Measure the complete setup at the wall rather than assuming the board’s rated power is its continuous draw. Count ordinary broadband as incremental only if the stream changes your plan or bill.

How much data does a continuous YouTube stream use?
Bitrate is the main driver of outbound video payload. For a 30-day month (2,592,000 seconds), the arithmetic estimate is bitrate in megabits per second × seconds ÷ 8, then expressed in decimal terabytes:

| Constant bitrate | Approximate 30-day payload | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | 1.62 TB | Arithmetic estimate; excludes protocol overhead and billing-definition differences. |
| 14 Mbps | 4.54 TB | Arithmetic estimate; excludes protocol overhead and billing-definition differences. |
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30, recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and advises testing representative audio and motion. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. Actual traffic can differ because of protocol overhead, restarts and provider billing definitions.
Amazon Lightsail’s published Linux bundle table lists 1 TB transfer with its $5/month plan and 2 TB with its $7/month plan. The 5 Mbps estimate exceeds the former allowance; the 14 Mbps estimate exceeds the latter. These are plan allowances, not proof that either VM can encode your stream or that the allowance and overage treatment apply identically in every region. Verify the applicable transfer rules before treating the advertised compute price as a total. See Lightsail pricing and bundle details.

What the Lightsail example does—and does not—tell you
AWS lists a Linux bundle at $5/month with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB storage and 1 TB transfer; the next listed bundle is $7/month with 1 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 40 GB storage and 2 TB transfer. AWS says plans accrue hourly charges up to the monthly plan cap, with the least expensive plan starting at $0.0067/hour ($5/month); stopped instances continue accruing charges until deleted. See the Lightsail billing FAQ.
Those are published plan specifications and billing details, not a test showing that a bundle can encode a particular video at a particular preset while streaming continuously. Confirm CPU headroom, memory, region pricing, transfer and any overage costs against your stream configuration.

Can a Raspberry Pi 5 encode a 24/7 YouTube stream?
Pi 5 uses a quad-core 2.4 GHz Arm Cortex-A76 processor, but it has no hardware H.264 encoder: H.264 encoding relies on libx264 software encoding. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s performance note reports real-time 1080p30 at low-latency settings using as little as 60% of one CPU core; its high-quality preset used approximately 100–150% of one core under the tested conditions. The note also reports 2–3 dB higher PSNR than Pi 4’s hardware encoder at tested practical bitrates. These results describe documented test conditions, not every source video or a guarantee of 24/7 operation. See Raspberry Pi Ltd’s Pi 5 product information and H.264 encoding performance note.
Actual CPU load and continuity depend on source content, encoder preset, overlays, audio/video capture, thermal conditions, software and network stability. A benchmark for encoding speed does not establish long-term uptime or automatic recovery after a failure.

What a Pi 5 build needs
- Board and boot media: Pi 5 has a microSD slot and requires boot media, such as a microSD card; it has no onboard storage.
- Power: Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C supply rated at 5 V, 5 A. Its setup guidance says a 5 V, 3 A supply limits current available to peripherals to 600 mA.
- Cooling: Raspberry Pi recommends active cooling for best performance. Cooling needs depend on workload and environment, so do not treat the recommendation as proof that every installation requires a particular cooler.
- Connection and recovery: The Pi needs stable home upload bandwidth and a recovery plan for device, router, power or encoder failures.
See Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 setup guidance for power and setup details.
Configure either encoder around YouTube’s requirements
- Choose the stream settings: For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended. Select a bitrate appropriate to the source and available upload capacity; use constant bitrate encoding.
- Set keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds, per YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Use RTMPS: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. In your encoder, enter the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room; keep the key private.
- Test before relying on it: Test representative audio and motion and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A smooth test at one moment does not prove uninterrupted operation over days.
- Plan for long broadcasts: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, so plan for restarts and archive segmentation rather than assuming one endless archive.
For copyright, use only material you have rights to stream. Reusing content does not itself establish that you have permission, and a continuous broadcast is not exempt from YouTube’s applicable rules. Review YouTube’s current encoder guidance and channel policies before going live.
Choose based on your operating period and constraints
- A Pi may suit you if you already own the board and accessories, can provide reliable home power and upload, and have verified CPU and thermal headroom with your actual video and settings. Its purchase cost should not be counted again if it is already owned.
- A VM may suit you if you want the encoder hosted remotely and can confirm that the selected instance handles the workload and that transfer charges fit your budget. Calculate data from bitrate and hours, not from the VM’s advertised monthly price alone.
- Neither cost estimate is complete without your local electricity rate and measured system draw for the Pi, or the VM region, compute choice, transfer rules and any overages for the cloud option.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a managed YouTube service rather than a Pi-versus-VM build: upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or broadcast to platforms other than YouTube.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to run.
- Each slot streams your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; it is one free day per account.
Monthly plan: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans, then start your free day.
