Chrome’s full-size screenshot captures the page’s full extent, but it does not guarantee that every section has loaded. If a site waits for scrolling before it fetches images, reveals components, or adds feed items, a capture taken before those triggers can leave them out. Scroll-triggered loading is a likely cause—not proof of a defect in Chrome’s screenshot feature.
What Chrome’s full-page capture does—and does not promise
Chrome DevTools offers separate options for a screenshot of the current viewport and for a full-size screenshot. The latter is documented as capturing the whole page, including content outside the viewport. Chrome’s documentation does not say that this command scrolls through the page to trigger content loading.
That distinction matters: capturing the full extent of a page is not the same as making the page load everything that might appear during interaction. A page can have a long layout while some of its images, embeds, or components are still waiting for a scroll event, a network response, or JavaScript.
Chrome’s documented instruction is: “To capture a screenshot of the whole page including the content that isn’t currently visible in the viewport, select Capture a full size screenshot from the same menu.” Chrome DevTools: Device Mode

Why content that appears while scrolling can be absent
Lazy-loaded media waits until it is needed
Sites may defer loading non-critical resources until they are near the visible area. MDN notes that lazy loading “typically happens on some user interactions such as scrolling and navigation.” As a result, an image or embedded resource below the fold may not be ready when you capture the page.
The page’s load event is not a reliable all-content-ready signal: MDN explains that it can fire while lazy-loaded images, iframes, video, or audio remain unloaded. MDN: Lazy loading

JavaScript may wait for an intersection
A site can use the Intersection Observer API to detect when an element enters the viewport or a specified ancestor. Its callback may then load an image, reveal a component, or request another batch of content. If the observer watches a nested scrolling panel, scrolling the browser window may not trigger the event it needs. MDN: Intersection Observer API
Infinite feeds and virtualized lists are interactive views
An infinite feed may append items only as you progress through it. A virtualized list may reuse a small number of rendered elements instead of keeping every item in the document at once. A static full-page capture may therefore not show items that the page has not created or retained. This depends on the site’s implementation; test the specific page rather than assuming all full-size screenshots behave the same way.

How to get a more complete capture manually
- Choose the full-size screenshot command. In Chrome DevTools, use the device toolbar’s screenshot menu and select Capture a full size screenshot, rather than capturing only the current viewport.
- Reload the page and scroll through it first. Move down in moderate increments so each section has a chance to enter view.
- Pause for content to settle. Wait at each new area for images, embeds, and asynchronous cards to appear. There is no universal wait duration; use the page’s visible behavior as your cue.
- Scroll the relevant panel, if there is one. When content sits inside a nested scroll area, move that panel itself rather than only scrolling the main document.
- Capture again and compare. Check the result against the live page after scrolling to the section that was missing.
This is a practical workaround based on how lazy loading and intersection-triggered content work, not a guaranteed fix for every site. If a page continues to load items as you move through it, capture the content as you progress or use the site’s export or print feature if it suits your needs.
Making repeated captures more reliable
For a repeatable workflow, automate the interactions the page expects: scroll the document or the correct nested panel, wait for the expected content, then verify that the target elements exist before taking the screenshot. Do not rely on the page’s load event alone to confirm that lazy-loaded media is ready.

When assessing a capture workflow, check whether it:
- captures the viewport or the full document;
- performs actual scroll interactions or only captures the current rendered page;
- waits for images, network activity, and JavaScript-rendered elements;
- can scroll a nested container; and
- can handle pages that append content or virtualize a list.
Chrome documents the viewport-versus-full-size distinction. The other checks follow from the loading mechanisms above and should be validated for the page and automation workflow you use.

Does Chrome’s full-size screenshot scroll the page first?
