For repeatable Playwright visual tests, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(), explicitly set the capture scale and comparison tolerance, and generate and compare baselines in the same browser and host environment. Disable motion, hide the caret, and suppress only content that is genuinely unpredictable. Commit baselines and review every change before updating them.

Start with Playwright’s screenshot assertion

Use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() for visual regression checks. Playwright captures repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the result with a stored baseline. This helps avoid saving a frame captured mid-render.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('homepage visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', {
    scale: 'css',
    animations: 'disabled',
    caret: 'hide',
    threshold: 0.1,
  });
});

Replace the example URL and viewport with the page and dimensions relevant to your test. Keep generated snapshot files under version control. When a visual change is intentional, inspect the diff and update baselines deliberately with npx playwright test --update-snapshots; do not accept changes automatically just to make a failing test pass. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.

Keep the rendering environment consistent

Matching assertion options is not enough if the environment changes. Microsoft Playwright warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Generate and compare snapshots using the same operating system, browser version, browser settings, and headless configuration wherever possible.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If your test matrix intentionally covers multiple browsers or platforms, use separate project-specific baselines rather than comparing different rendering engines against one image. Playwright supports including project names in snapshot naming; see its visual comparison documentation and browser documentation.

Set screenshot options explicitly

Choose CSS or device scale

Set scale to match what the comparison is meant to test. 'css' produces one image pixel per CSS pixel, making image dimensions independent of a high-DPI device scale. 'device' produces one image pixel per device pixel, preserving device-pixel output but potentially creating larger images on high-DPI displays.

The documented defaults differ: toHaveScreenshot() defaults to CSS scale, while the standalone page.screenshot() API defaults to device scale. Set the option explicitly if you use both APIs or want the intent to remain clear. References: PageAssertions and Page.

Disable motion and hide the caret

Screenshot assertions default to animations: 'disabled' and caret: 'hide'. Disabling animations fast-forwards finite animations and fires transitionend; infinite animations are canceled for the capture and resume afterward. By contrast, standalone page.screenshot() allows animations by default. Specify these options explicitly when standalone captures need to match assertion snapshots.

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
  animations: 'disabled',
  caret: 'hide',
});

These settings reduce transient differences, but they do not make every source of nondeterminism disappear. See the documented options in PageAssertions and Page.

Choose a stable capture area and viewport

Use a fixed viewport in the relevant Playwright project configuration or set it in the test. The default screenshot captures the current viewport; fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page. Use a locator’s screenshot assertion when a component, rather than the whole page, is the regression risk.

Full-page captures can reveal layout changes farther down a long page, while viewport and component captures narrow the comparison and can make failures easier to diagnose. Use the scope that reflects the behavior you need to protect. See PageAssertions and Page.

Use lossless image output

Playwright visual snapshots default to PNG; lossless WebP snapshots are also supported. Keep comparisons lossless rather than using lossy compression, which can introduce pixel differences unrelated to a UI change. See Visual comparisons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control dynamic content without hiding regressions

Timestamps, rotating promotions, live data, and other volatile elements can make a comparison noisy. Use a screenshot-only stylesheet to hide or stabilize only the elements that are irrelevant to the test. Playwright documents that screenshot stylesheets pierce Shadow DOM and apply to inner frames.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Alternatively, mask specific locators. A mask paints a colored rectangle over each locator’s bounding box, including when the element is invisible. That makes masking useful for variable content, but a broad mask can conceal a real layout or rendering regression. Keep styles and masks narrowly scoped, and avoid suppressing the interface area the test is intended to verify. See Visual comparisons and PageAssertions.

Set diff tolerance deliberately

The threshold option is a per-pixel color-difference tolerance in YIQ color space, not a limit on how many pixels may differ. Its documented default is 0.2; 0 is strict and 1 is lax. For pixel-sensitive tests, set a stricter value that works for your controlled environment, then relax it only when you have identified harmless rendering noise.

maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio set separate limits on the allowed number or proportion of differing pixels; neither is set by default. These caps can be useful for known small variations, but large allowances may let genuine defects through. Tune one change at a time and inspect the resulting diff. Troubleshoot unstable or unexpected snapshots

The test fails repeatedly with small differences

  • Check environment parity: confirm baseline generation and test runs use the same host OS, browser version, browser configuration, and headless mode.
  • Check scale and viewport: set scale explicitly and use the same viewport dimensions and project configuration.
  • Check motion and focus: use the screenshot assertion defaults intentionally, or set animations: 'disabled' and caret: 'hide' in both capture paths as needed.
  • Find volatile content: identify timestamps, live data, or rotating content, then narrowly stabilize, style, or mask only those elements.
  • Inspect before loosening tolerance: distinguish harmless pixel noise from a real UI change before changing threshold or diff limits.

The screenshot dimensions do not match

Check whether one capture uses scale: 'device' and another uses scale: 'css', or whether the viewport differs. Also verify that both captures use the same scope: a viewport screenshot, a full-page screenshot, and a component screenshot are not interchangeable.

Updating snapshots would hide a failure

Do not run npx playwright test --update-snapshots as a routine fix. Review the expected and actual images first. Update only when the change is intended; otherwise fix the page, test setup, or source of nondeterminism and rerun the comparison.

Or skip the browser setup

For capturing a URL as an image or PDF outside a Playwright test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. This does not replace Playwright’s baseline comparison workflow; it is an alternative when you need a clean capture without setting up browser automation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
  --data-urlencode url=https://example.com
  -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use page.screenshot() or toHaveScreenshot() for visual regression tests?

Use toHaveScreenshot() when you want Playwright Test to compare an image with a managed baseline. Use page.screenshot() when you need a standalone capture rather than an assertion.

Can I use WebP for Playwright visual snapshots?

Yes. Playwright documents support for lossless WebP snapshots as well as the default PNG format.
