Choose Amazon IVS when your product needs a managed, interactive live-video experience; choose AWS Elemental MediaLive when you need to encode a broadcast or OTT feed. Add AWS Elemental MediaPackage for packaging and origination needs such as multiple delivery formats, DRM integration, time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD. In AWS’s documented reference workflow, Amazon CloudFront distributes MediaPackage outputs. The right choice depends on the viewer experience and the whole delivery workflow—not on treating IVS and MediaLive as interchangeable encoders.

What each AWS service does

Amazon IVS: managed interactive streaming

Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS) is AWS’s managed path for live video in interactive applications. It is a natural first option when the application needs low-latency channel delivery, chat, timed metadata, or player integration, including use cases such as virtual events, gaming streams, and interactive shopping.

AWS describes IVS low-latency channel delivery as under five seconds and IVS real-time stages as under 300 milliseconds. These are service-level capabilities, not guarantees for end-to-end latency on every viewer’s device and network. For channel viewers watching a broadcast stage, AWS says delivery uses the low-latency channel path.

AWS Elemental MediaLive: live encoding

MediaLive encodes live video for broadcast and OTT workflows. It is suited to live events, broadcast contribution, and linear channels where you need to encode a live feed. It is not, by itself, the entire downstream packaging and delivery workflow: AWS’s reference design sends MediaLive output to MediaPackage and then distributes the resulting endpoints through CloudFront.

AWS Elemental MediaPackage and Amazon CloudFront: packaging and delivery

MediaPackage prepares and originates content for downstream playback. Include it when you need capabilities such as multiple delivery formats, DRM integration, time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD. In AWS’s reference solution, MediaPackage provides HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints. CloudFront sits in front of MediaPackage to distribute the content, with playback requests authorized through the CDN workflow.

Compare the workflows before choosing

Decision point Amazon IVS MediaLive with MediaPackage and CloudFront
Core job Managed live-video service for interactive experiences Encode, package or originate as needed, then distribute a broadcast or OTT stream
Good fit Interactive applications where low latency, chat, timed metadata, or managed player integration matter Live events, broadcast contribution, or linear channels needing encoding controls and downstream delivery features
Latency AWS documents under-five-second channel delivery and under-300-millisecond IVS stages; actual viewer experience depends on the end-to-end path Depends on the configuration and workflow; do not assume IVS-like latency without design-specific evidence
Encoding and packaging Managed channel path; confirm channel type and output requirements MediaLive encodes; MediaPackage can package outputs into delivery formats and support features such as DRM integration, time-shifted viewing, and live-to-VOD
Reliability and control Managed service with channel-type choices; confirm requirements and quotas for the workload AWS’s reference architecture uses parallel primary and secondary feeds through MediaLive and MediaPackage for redundancy; validate its failover behavior against your recovery target
Cost meters For low-latency IVS, input and viewer-output usage are charged separately; output rates vary by resolution and billing region MediaLive channel input/output hours, plus MediaPackage ingest/origination and CloudFront delivery; storage and ad insertion may add costs
Operational shape Fewer workflow components for an integrated application experience More service composition and configuration, useful when broadcast workflow control and downstream delivery features are required

Choose by answering these questions in order

  1. Does the product depend on real-time interaction? If viewers need to interact with hosts in near-real time, or the application needs chat, timed metadata, or a managed player integration, evaluate IVS first. If the requirement is to encode a broadcast feed into an OTT workflow, evaluate MediaLive.
  2. Which playback formats and access features must you support? If clients require different formats, DRM integration, DVR or time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD, account for MediaPackage. AWS’s reference solution uses HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints and routes authorized playback through CloudFront to MediaPackage.
  3. What recovery objective must the service meet? For a critical event, specify acceptable interruption and recovery time, then assess redundant inputs and processing paths, failover behavior, regional availability, and monitoring. AWS’s reference architecture documents primary and secondary feeds and logs across MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront; that does not by itself establish that the design meets your particular recovery objective.
  4. Which ingest protocols can your encoder and network support? AWS’s IVS low-latency documentation lists RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT ingest. Verify that the selected encoder supports the chosen protocol and that firewalls permit the required network traffic before production. The protocol list alone does not establish that a particular hardware purchase is necessary.
  5. What will the full workflow cost at your expected usage? Estimate ingest and channel hours, viewer output hours and regions, encoding outputs, packaging, CDN delivery, recordings and storage, and ad insertion. Include redundancy if the production design requires it.

Understand the latency claims

AWS documents IVS low-latency channel delivery under five seconds and real-time IVS stages under 300 milliseconds on its current low-latency user-guide page; the page’s publication year was not stated in the consulted result. Treat these as descriptions of service capabilities, not as promises for a particular viewer. Device performance, network conditions, encoder settings, and the complete delivery path affect end-to-end results.

The available AWS material does not establish a universal MediaLive latency figure. Latency for a MediaLive-based design depends on its configuration and workflow, so set and validate a target for the specific architecture rather than assuming it matches IVS.

Estimate costs for the whole architecture

These services have different billing meters, so compare workload estimates rather than a single service price. For IVS low-latency, AWS describes separate input-hour and viewer-output-hour charges. Every stream sent incurs input cost even if nobody watches; output is metered separately. Output rates vary by resolution and billing region, and AWS identifies the viewer-serving location—not necessarily the channel’s configured AWS Region—as the location relevant to that billing region.

For a MediaLive workflow, account for input and output channel hours, MediaPackage ingest and origination, and CloudFront delivery. Recording can add S3 storage costs and CDN delivery costs for recorded video. Server-side ad insertion through MediaTailor brings separate insertion and transcoding charges. IVS Real-Time Streaming participant hours and IVS Chat message counts are additional meters when those services are used.

Use example estimates only within their assumptions

AWS’s deployment-planning example estimates $69.74 per hour for a one-hour event with 1,000 viewers under its specified MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront configuration. It is an illustrative scenario, not a quote for a different audience, resolution, region, redundancy setting, or event duration. The page’s publication year was not stated in the consulted result, and AWS notes that variable bitrate and complexity can reduce output bandwidth relative to its estimate.

Plan reliability as an architecture requirement

For an important event, decide what failure modes you need to survive and how quickly service must recover. Assess redundant ingest and processing, failover behavior, regional availability, logging, alerting, and the operational procedures for switching or restoring a feed. AWS’s reference architecture shows primary and secondary feeds across MediaLive and MediaPackage and logs across MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront. Treat that as a starting design, not proof of a particular availability or recovery guarantee; check service quotas and validate the proposed architecture against your own objectives.
