To switch a 24/7 YouTube radio stream between lofi and ambient music, automate the change in the playback system that feeds YouTube—not by scheduling two ordinary YouTube playlists. With a local setup, prepare separate playback scenes in OBS and automate scene changes while OBS keeps sending one continuous live feed. For a stream that should keep running after you turn off your computer, use a cloud playout service.
How playlist switching works on a YouTube live stream
YouTube receives a continuous signal from an encoder or playout service. That system—not YouTube’s regular playlist feature—determines which music and visuals are playing at a given moment. YouTube lists encoder streaming as a way to broadcast production inputs such as overlays and external hardware. YouTube’s live-streaming guide explains its available methods.
For alternating programming, create distinct lofi and ambient playback states, then set a schedule or trigger to switch between them. The YouTube broadcast can remain live while the content changes within the encoder or playout system.
Before you build the stream
Confirm your channel can livestream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to livestream. Check your channel’s status and follow the current setup guidance in YouTube Help.

Clear the music and visuals for use
Make sure you have the necessary rights to broadcast every track, visual, and other asset in both playlists. A track being labelled “lofi,” “ambient,” or “royalty-free” does not by itself establish that your intended use is covered; check the specific license terms.
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. YouTube expects monetized work to be original and authentic, identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as ineligible for monetization, and assesses reused content at the channel level. A 24/7 loop does not by itself establish monetization eligibility.

Set up playlist switching locally with OBS
This approach gives you direct control, but the computer running OBS, its media, power, and internet connection must remain available for the broadcast to continue.
- Organize the programming. Keep the lofi and ambient tracks in separate, clearly named playlists or media sets. Decide whether the switch should happen at a set time, after a chosen duration, or when a playlist ends.
- Create a playback state for each set. In OBS, prepare a lofi scene and an ambient scene, each with the corresponding audio and visuals. A community discussion on the OBS Project forum describes using different scenes with VLC playlists and suggests automating scene changes with Advanced Scene Switcher. It is a community example, not a universal recipe; exact setup can vary by OBS version and operating system.
- Configure the switch. Choose a schedule or trigger in your scene automation setup. If relying on playlist-end behavior or edits while a playlist is playing, test how your specific configuration responds; the cited forum discussion reports variable behavior when playlist edits were made during a stream.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Set up the encoder broadcast using YouTube’s current live-stream instructions. Keep the same broadcast running as OBS changes scenes; the scene change should alter the program being sent, not require you to start a second ordinary YouTube playlist.
- Run a complete handoff test. Watch and listen through at least one lofi-to-ambient transition and the reverse. Check whether the next playlist starts, whether there is an audio gap or overlap, whether the visual change looks right, and what happens at the end of the final item. The available examples do not guarantee gapless playback or a particular crossfade on every system.
- Plan for local interruptions. Keep the computer awake, OBS running, and the internet connection stable. Choose between local and cloud playout
Local OBS is a fit if you want hands-on control and can keep the setup running. Cloud playout can keep the source material and broadcast running without a home computer staying on, but check how the service handles playlist changes, storage, billing, and interruptions before relying on it for a particular schedule.

Troubleshoot playlist handoffs
- The YouTube stream stays live but the music does not change: Confirm that your automation trigger actually changes the OBS scene or playback state, rather than only editing a playlist that the player may not refresh. Test the change locally before depending on it live.
- The next playlist does not start: Check the trigger condition, the playlist’s end behavior, and that the next scene’s media source is available. Run a full test through the end of the current set.
- There is a gap, overlap, or abrupt cut: Review how your specific scenes and sources handle audio when switching. Adjust the handoff and test it again; the available community example does not establish a universal crossfade setting.
- The stream stops when you leave: In a local workflow, verify the computer has not slept and that OBS, power, and internet remain available. If you need operation independent of a home computer, consider cloud playout.
- YouTube will not let you start: Check channel verification and whether live-streaming restrictions have applied within the previous 90 days, as described in YouTube Help.
- A track triggers a rights or monetization concern: Review your license and retain documentation for the music and visuals. Do not assume that a continuous or looped format avoids YouTube’s copyright or monetization policies.
When HLS settings matter
Most creators following the OBS encoder workflow do not need to change YouTube’s HLS-specific ingest settings. If you deliberately use HLS, Google’s technical guide specifies 1–4 second segment durations, transport-stream (TS) segments, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; it also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Follow the current HLS ingestion documentation for that workflow rather than applying those requirements to every radio stream.
