Short answer: FFmpeg’s tcp_keepalive=1 enables basic TCP keepalive, which can help detect a dead peer on an idle connection. It is not a general RTMP timeout fix or an automatic reconnect option, and it does not guarantee that an active YouTube stream will stay connected. First check the YouTube stream URL, RTMP or RTMPS protocol support, and network path; then consider keepalive only if an idle TCP connection is the likely issue.
What FFmpeg keepalive does—and what it does not do
FFmpeg documents tcp_keepalive as a way to “Enable the TCP keepalive mechanism to detect dead peers and help maintain long-lived idle connections.” The documented default is off. This is an operating-system-level TCP feature for probing an idle connection; it is not the same as RTMP application traffic, repairing an active publishing session, or restarting a dropped stream. FFmpeg protocol documentation
That distinction matters because “connection timed out” describes a symptom, not necessarily its cause. The connection may be failing before it reaches YouTube, or a stream that was already publishing may later drop. TCP keepalive is not documented as a cure for either general class of failure, and FFmpeg does not describe this toggle as a reconnect policy.

Check the YouTube endpoint and protect the stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current stream URL and compare it with the destination in your FFmpeg command. Confirm that the URL is for the intended stream and that there are no transcription errors. YouTube provides the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. Never share the stream key in logs, screenshots, or support requests; replace it with a placeholder before sharing a command. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming

Verify RTMP versus RTMPS compatibility
If you are using an RTMPS endpoint, confirm the URL uses the secure protocol and that your installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and its required TLS stack. YouTube’s troubleshooting for “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” specifically directs users to check the server URL, use the
rtmpsprotocol where applicable, and ensure the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream errors YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming -
Check the network path and upload capacity
Look for packet loss, firewall or proxy interference, and upload-speed changes at the time of the disconnect. YouTube notes that connection disruptions can break a stream and recommends enough outbound bandwidth with headroom. If the local Wi-Fi hop is unstable, a wired Ethernet connection may help isolate that part of the path; it will not fix a bad endpoint, an upstream route or ISP outage, or a YouTube-side event. Establish when and where the failure occurs
Determine whether FFmpeg fails to connect at startup or publishes successfully and disconnects later. Check Live Control Room’s stream health and correlate its messages with FFmpeg timestamps and any router or network events. A startup timeout points you toward reachability, URL, protocol, or encoder compatibility; a later drop can require investigating a different failure layer.
-
Record the installed FFmpeg build and relevant output
Capture the FFmpeg version and build configuration, the command with credentials redacted, the exact error lines and timestamps, whether the destination is RTMP or RTMPS, and whether other network traffic drops at the same time. Protocol options and their behavior can vary by release and build. Check the installed binary’s help and the matching FFmpeg documentation before applying an option.

How to use tcp_keepalive=1 cautiously
For an output publishing connection, FFmpeg’s TCP keepalive option belongs with the output connection—not on the input side merely because the command also has an input. The exact syntax and availability depend on the protocol implementation and installed build, so do not copy a command fragment without checking that build’s help and documentation. When supported, tcp_keepalive=1 turns on the basic TCP mechanism; it does not provide a universal timer setting.
FFmpeg’s documented toggle does not expose platform-specific keepalive timers such as idle interval, probe interval, or probe count. These use operating-system defaults. There is no single timer value established here as correct for all systems, and no documented success rate showing that the setting prevents YouTube publishing disconnects. Keepalive, timeout, and reconnect are different controls

tcp_keepalive=1 |
Basic idle-connection dead-peer detection and keepalive, when supported | Reconnect, active-stream repair, or custom timer tuning |
| Stable wired network and upload headroom | Local Wi-Fi instability or a constrained uplink | A fix for an ISP route, YouTube ingest event, or encoder fault |
| Reconnect supervisor or retry logic | Recovery after a dropped connection, if configured and tested for the installed build | Seamless continuation or preservation of every frame |
| YouTube encoder recommendations | Encoder and ingest configuration | TCP session persistence |
Do not confuse FFmpeg’s RTMP timeout option with a generic outgoing publisher keepalive. FFmpeg documents that RTMP option as a maximum wait for an incoming connection and says it implies listen mode; that is not a general YouTube publishing timeout fix. I/O timeout and reconnection behavior are separate controls whose availability and semantics depend on the FFmpeg protocol implementation and version. FFmpeg protocol documentation
Use YouTube’s encoder settings as a separate check
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds that does not exceed four seconds. These settings help align the encoder output with YouTube’s guidance; they do not keep a TCP connection alive or promise uninterrupted delivery. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream errors

What to collect when the stream still disconnects
- FFmpeg version and build configuration.
- The complete command with the stream key replaced by a placeholder.
- Exact error lines and timestamps, plus whether the failure happens at startup or after streaming begins.
- Whether the output uses RTMP or RTMPS.
- Whether other network connections fail at the same time.
- Live Control Room stream-health messages and any correlated router or network events.
These details help distinguish an endpoint or protocol issue from a network interruption or a later publishing-session failure. “Connection timed out” alone is not enough to identify a definitive root cause. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing its messages. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream errors
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than to troubleshoot an FFmpeg process, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded-video playback to YouTube, not live camera encoding. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
