If your FFmpeg video resumes after reconnecting but the YouTube stream has no sound, first check whether FFmpeg received an audio stream again. Reconnect options retry an input connection; they do not recreate audio. If audio is present, check for -an, incorrect -map options, and output encoding or mapping issues. Without your command and before-and-after logs, the specific cause cannot be identified.

Diagnose the input, mapping, and output in that order

Video continuing is not proof that the input still contains audio. Compare FFmpeg’s input stream descriptions and reconnect logs before and after the interruption, then trace any audio stream through the output mapping. This separates a source problem from a command-line selection problem or an output problem.

  1. Capture the logs: save the full startup and reconnect output, including the input stream descriptions and the Stream mapping lines.
  2. Compare the input streams: check whether an audio stream is listed before the interruption and after FFmpeg reconnects.
  3. Inspect the command: look for -an and review every -map option.
  4. Follow audio into the output: if the input lists audio and the command selects it, inspect the output mapping and encoding logs.

FFmpeg’s command documentation explains that automatic stream selection depends on the output format, while -map lets you select streams explicitly. The actual command and stream listing are therefore important; a fixed stream index cannot safely be prescribed without them.

If the input has no audio after reconnecting

If the post-reconnect input listing contains no audio stream, changing output mapping cannot restore audio that the source is not supplying. The available information does not establish why the source lost audio. Check the source and its behavior around the disconnect, and capture its post-reconnect stream listing rather than treating the continuing video as evidence that both streams returned.

If the input has audio, check the command

Look for -an

FFmpeg documents -an as disabling audio recording on the output, including audio that would otherwise be selected or mapped. If it appears among the output options, review whether it is intentional.

Review every -map

Manual mapping controls which input streams are sent to the output. Confirm that the audio stream selected by the command is actually present in the post-reconnect input. An optional audio map such as -map 0:a? permits the command to continue when that input has no audio stream; it does not restore or synthesize audio. If audio is absent, the resulting output may still have no audio.

Inspect output handling

If the post-reconnect input has audio and the command maps it, use the output mapping and encoding logs to determine where it stops appearing. The title alone cannot establish whether the cause is stream selection, output handling, or a YouTube-side issue.

Reconnect options depend on the input protocol

FFmpeg’s reconnect controls concern retrying a connection, not selecting or restoring an audio stream. The project’s HTTP protocol implementation defines options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed, along with retry limits and delays. These are HTTP-specific; do not assume they apply to a different input protocol.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

In the current source declaration, reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_streamed default to false; reconnect_delay_max defaults to 120 seconds; reconnect_delay_total_max defaults to 256 seconds; respect_retry_after defaults to enabled; and reconnect_max_retries is unset (unlimited). These are HTTP implementation defaults, not universal settings for every protocol, FFmpeg version, or build. Check the installed version and the protocol actually used before changing flags.
