To stream an IP camera on a website, send its camera feed—usually RTSP—to a media server or hosted relay, convert that feed into a browser-ready format such as WebRTC or HLS, then embed the resulting player. Browsers generally cannot play an RTSP camera URL directly. Choose WebRTC when low delay matters most, or HLS when broad device compatibility is the priority.

How the camera feed reaches a website

The camera and browser use different streaming formats. The camera commonly sends video over RTSP; a media server or hosted service receives that feed and packages it for browser playback. The website embeds the player or output from that bridge—not the camera’s RTSP URL. Wowza’s overview describes this RTSP-ingest, browser-compatible-delivery, and player sequence.

RTSP and ONVIF are related, but they are not interchangeable: RTSP carries the stream, while ONVIF supports interoperability and device capabilities. ONVIF’s Profile V documentation describes secure, low-latency live video and audio streaming, cloud recording, and event notifications; the page identifies Profile V as a Release Candidate.

Check that your camera can provide a stream

  1. Find the exact model and its streaming options. Check the manufacturer’s documentation or camera settings for RTSP support and the stream path. Do not assume that paths shown for one camera apply to another.
  2. Enable RTSP if required. Some cameras require you to enable the protocol or create a separate account for streaming. Use a dedicated account with only the access it needs.
  3. Get the camera’s local IP address and RTSP URL. The URL typically includes the address, path, and sometimes account credentials. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or paste it into public code.
  4. Check model-specific limitations. TP-Link’s Tapo guidance says wired Tapo cameras support RTSP and ONVIF, while many battery-powered models generally do not support RTSP. This is an example for that product family, not a rule for all cameras.

If your camera does not offer RTSP, look for another ingest method that a compatible media server or hosted service explicitly supports. A camera that only works through its own app may not provide a feed you can relay to a website.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Verify the RTSP feed before setting up the website

Open the RTSP URL in a compatible player such as VLC on a device on the same trusted network as the camera. If the picture does not play there, troubleshoot the camera, URL, credentials, or local network before working on the website. A successful local test narrows later problems to the relay, browser output, or embed.

Do not test by exposing the camera’s RTSP port to the public internet. TP-Link’s support guidance says: “Only use RTSP and ONVIF on trusted local networks with encrypted Wi-Fi. These protocols are not recommended for use on public networks.”

Choose a media server or hosted relay

Self-managed media server

A self-managed server receives the camera feed and provides the browser-compatible output. This gives you direct control over ingest, delivery, and access settings, but you are responsible for setup, hosting, updates, and security. Wowza’s technical overview describes RTSP ingest with WebRTC or HLS delivery.

Hosted camera relay

A hosted service can package more of the workflow, such as the relay, a browser watch page, and an embed code. For example, OctoStream’s overview documents RTSP camera pull, browser watch pages, website embeds, scheduling, recordings, and external restreaming. Those are provider-described capabilities, not a controlled comparison of services. Check the current feature set, access controls, terms, and pricing directly before choosing one.

Neither approach is universally cheaper or more capable: deployment cost, viewer capacity, and service levels depend on the specific server or service and configuration.

Choose WebRTC or HLS for browser playback

Option Best starting point What to check
WebRTC When low-delay viewing is the main priority. Confirm the player and target browsers support the chosen output, then measure delay across your actual camera, server, network, and player.
HLS When compatibility across devices is the greater priority. Verify the player and browser requirements for your deployment; measure actual end-to-end delay if timing matters.

These are trade-offs, not guarantees: actual latency and compatibility depend on the full setup. The cited sources do not establish a universal delay, bandwidth requirement, or viewer limit.

Embed the browser-ready player

  1. Configure the relay output. Select WebRTC or HLS according to your needs and enable appropriate authentication or other access controls.
  2. Use the service’s player or embed code. Add the provider’s player or embed to the intended page. The player should use the relay’s browser-compatible output, not the camera’s RTSP URL.
  3. Keep credentials private. Never put camera credentials in a public page, client-side configuration, or shareable link. Check that the embed does not reveal the RTSP URL or camera login.
  4. Test the deployed page. Check playback on the desktop and mobile browsers your visitors use. Test what happens when the camera or network disconnects, when credentials are invalid, and when an unauthorized visitor tries to access the output.

Browser support depends on the specific player and output. Provider documentation is not a universal compatibility test, so verify the actual devices and browsers you intend to support.

Protect the camera and the public-facing stream

  • Keep RTSP and ONVIF access on a trusted local network; do not expose the camera interfaces directly to the public internet.
  • For remote access to the camera itself, TP-Link recommends an encrypted VPN rather than public-network RTSP or ONVIF access. See its camera guidance.
  • Expose only the intended relay output or player, and apply authentication or access restrictions appropriate to what the camera captures.
  • Use unique, strong camera credentials and avoid embedding secrets in page source or client-side scripts.
  • Consider who can view or record the scene. A public embed may reveal private spaces even when the camera’s own login stays hidden.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to try
The RTSP feed will not open in VLC. RTSP is disabled or unsupported, the URL or credentials are wrong, or the camera is unreachable on the local network. Check the exact model’s documentation and RTSP setting, re-enter the model-specific path and account details, and confirm the camera is reachable from the test device.
The feed works locally but the website is blank. The page is using an RTSP URL directly, or the relay output, player, or embed is misconfigured. Use the server’s browser-ready WebRTC or HLS output and verify the embed code and player configuration.
Only some browsers or devices play the stream. The chosen output or player is not supported by all target browsers or devices. Check the player’s documented requirements, test each intended platform, and consider HLS if broad compatibility is the priority.
Playback stops during a network interruption. The camera-to-relay or relay-to-viewer connection has been interrupted. Test both network paths separately, inspect relay status, and confirm how the chosen server or service handles reconnects.
The public page exposes camera access details. The camera URL or credentials were placed in public-facing code or the output is insufficiently protected. Remove exposed secrets, rotate the camera password if needed, keep the camera interface private, and restrict the relay output.

Or let it run in the cloud
