Lossless compression makes a video more compact while preserving the encoded source exactly; lossy compression achieves greater size or bitrate savings by permanently discarding some information. Choose lossless when exact preservation or further editing matters. Choose lossy when efficient storage, delivery, or streaming matters more than exact reconstruction.

What do lossy and lossless mean?

Compression represents video data more efficiently. Lossless compression removes redundancy in a way that lets a decoder recreate the encoded source exactly. That does not mean the video is uncompressed: a lossless format can use less storage than an uncompressed representation.

Lossy compression reduces data by permanently discarding some information. The decoded video therefore cannot exactly reproduce the source. The reduction can make a file smaller or easier to transmit, but discarded information cannot be recovered simply by decoding it.

Lossy vs. lossless at a glance

Question Lossless Lossy
Does decoding recreate the encoded source exactly? Yes. Exact reconstruction is the defining property. No. Some information has been discarded.
Main tradeoff Preserves data, but files and encoding demands can still be substantial. Can reduce file size and delivery bitrate, at the cost of irreversible loss.
Common fit Preservation, scientific imaging, screen recording, and editing intermediates where avoiding generational loss matters. Distribution and streaming where bitrate and file size matter.
Does “visually lossless” mean exact? Lossless compression is mathematically exact. No. It means the loss may not be detectable by eye, not that the data is identical.

Which one should you use?

Choose lossless for preservation or continued work

Use lossless when retaining exact encoded data is important—for example, when preserving source material, analyzing scientific imagery, recording a screen, or creating an intermediate for later editing. Each lossy encode can discard additional information, so a lossless intermediate can avoid adding another lossy generation.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

FFV1 is a documented lossless, intra-frame format. The IETF says it offers storage compression, frame fixity, and self-description compared with uncompressed video, and identifies preservation, scientific imaging, and screen recording among its applications. Read RFC 9043.

Choose lossy for practical delivery

For streaming or distributing a video, lossy compression is often the practical choice because it can reduce the data that must be stored or sent. How much reduction is suitable depends on the source, encoder, settings, and the quality acceptable to your audience. The choice is a tradeoff, not a guarantee that every lossy file will be small or every lossless file large.

What “visually lossless” really means

“Visually lossless” describes a perceptual result: after compression and decompression, the lost information is not detectable to the eye. It remains lossy because the decoded values are not necessarily identical to the source. RFC 8761 uses the term for lossy compression whose lost data are not detectable to the eye after compressing and decompressing. See RFC 8761.

If you need exact reconstruction, do not treat a visually lossless label as a substitute for a lossless mode. If your goal is viewing rather than exact preservation, perceptual quality may be the relevant criterion.

Codec names, bitrate, and compression method

A codec name alone does not settle the question

Check the encoding mode and settings, not only the codec name. For example, x265 documents a lossless mode and says all its presets can generate lossless video streams. Its documentation also notes that, in general, slower presets yield better compression ratios but take longer to encode; that is an x265-specific tradeoff, not a universal benchmark. See x265’s lossless-mode documentation.

FFV1, by contrast, is explicitly specified as a lossless format. AV1 is described by the Alliance for Open Media as an open codec designed for high-quality, efficient compression; actual results and whether a particular encode is lossless depend on the encoder, configuration, decoder, and device. See the Alliance for Open Media’s AV1 overview.

Bitrate is not determined by resolution alone

Resolution matters, but so do frame rate, color depth, codec, encoding parameters, scene complexity, and motion. RFC 9317 lists typical examples of 6–8 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p, 4.5–7 Mbps for H.265 at 1080p, and 10–20 Mbps for H.265 at 2160p. These are published typical ranges, not universal targets or a controlled comparison proving one codec will always outperform another. See RFC 9317.

Intraframe and interframe are a separate distinction

Intraframe compression treats frames individually; interframe compression exploits redundancy between adjacent frames. Those terms describe how frames relate to one another, not whether an encode is lossy or lossless. Evaluate fidelity separately. FADGI’s 2014 archival guidance prefers intraframe compression in its described preservation context; that context-specific recommendation should not be read as a universal rule for every codec or use. Read FADGI’s video archiving guidance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming lossless means uncompressed: lossless formats can reduce storage by encoding redundancy more efficiently.
  • Assuming “visually lossless” means reversible: it describes perceived visibility of loss, not exact reconstruction.
  • Choosing by resolution alone: bitrate also depends on frame rate, color depth, codec, settings, complexity, and motion.
  • Equating interframe with lossy: intraframe/interframe and lossy/lossless describe different properties.
  • Expecting every lossless file to be small or quick to encode: outcomes depend on format, encoder, settings, and content.
