Multistreaming—called simulstreaming by YouTube—means broadcasting the same live content to more than one platform at the same time. The key choice is how to distribute it: have your local computer send a separate output to each destination, or send one feed to a cloud relay that distributes it for you. The right option depends on your computer, upload capacity, number of destinations, and how much direct control you want.
What multistreaming means
YouTube describes simulstreaming as going live with the same content across multiple platforms at once. For example, a creator might send a live show to YouTube and Twitch simultaneously. Each destination receives a stream, but its technical setup, rules, and audience experience may differ. YouTube’s guidance applies to YouTube; check every other platform’s current requirements and policies separately.
Multistreaming is not the same as uploading a video to several platforms after a broadcast. The feeds are live at the same time, so changes to the content, audio, or connection can affect all destinations.
Choose between a local encoder and a cloud relay
| Approach | How it works | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | Your computer or streaming device processes the production and sends a separate stream to each platform. | Creators with a capable computer and stable, fast upload who want direct control over outputs and settings. | More destinations increase demands on the device and outbound connection. Setup and monitoring can be more involved. |
| Cloud relay | You send one high-quality feed to a service, which distributes it to selected platforms. | Creators seeking a simpler distribution setup, using an older or less capable computer, or sending to more than two channels. | Plans may limit destinations or features and may require a subscription; terms vary by provider. |
YouTube outlines both approaches in its guide to streaming across platforms. A local encoder can offer control, but the computer and connection must handle the work. A relay shifts distribution to a service, reducing the number of outgoing feeds your own connection needs to send. Neither approach removes the need to meet each destination’s rules or to test the complete path.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How much upload bandwidth do you need?
Add the target bitrates for all streams sent directly from your location, then leave headroom for stability. YouTube’s planning example uses a 6 Mbps stream and a 4 Mbps stream: the combined target is 10 Mbps, and YouTube advises aiming for 15–20 Mbps upload, or 1.5–2 times the combined target. This is guidance, not a guarantee; shared-network traffic, other destinations, actual bitrates, and service behavior can change what works.
With a cloud relay, your local connection generally sends the single feed to the relay rather than a separate feed to every platform. You still need enough stable upload for that incoming feed, and the relay must support the destinations and output settings you need. Check the provider’s current plan limits and technical instructions.

Set up a multistream to YouTube and another platform
The exact controls differ by encoder, relay, and destination. Use each platform’s current ingest instructions; the following sequence covers the decisions that matter without assuming a specific encoder interface.
- Confirm YouTube eligibility. Verify that live streaming is enabled on your channel and check its current standing. YouTube’s live-start guidance says the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, the person streaming must be at least 16, and enabling a first live stream takes at least 24 hours after the request. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements before scheduling; requirements and account limits can change.
- Choose local output or a relay. Use a local encoder if your computer and upload connection can handle each direct output and you want direct configuration. Use a relay if you prefer to send one feed for distribution or intend to reach several destinations, after checking its supported platforms and plan limits.
- Gather destination details securely. For each destination, follow its current instructions to connect an account or obtain the required stream key and ingest details. Treat stream keys like passwords: do not publish them, and reset them if exposed. Do not assume a YouTube key or setting works on another service.
- Configure the YouTube output. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Choose settings compatible with the encoder and the destination’s current recommendations; bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, HDR, and other settings, so there is no single correct bitrate for every broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Configure every other output or relay destination. Match each platform’s current ingest instructions and any required output profile. For a local encoder, confirm the machine can encode and send the chosen outputs without dropped frames or overloaded resources. For a relay, confirm the inbound feed and each outbound destination are connected.
- Run a private or unlisted test where available. Use representative movement and audio, not just a static screen. Check picture, sound, sync, stream health, and whether each destination actually receives the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health during the event.
- Start and monitor the live broadcast. Confirm the correct destination streams are live, then watch each platform’s status and your encoder or relay dashboard. Keep a recovery plan for a dropped connection, failed destination, or exposed stream key.
Horizontal and vertical YouTube streams
YouTube treats horizontal and vertical live streams differently. Vertical streams may appear in the Shorts feed, while YouTube’s comparison lists features available to horizontal streams that are not available to vertical streams, including clickable links in chat and the channel description, live ad midrolls and pre-rolls, and premieres. These differences affect discovery and features, so choose a format based on the viewing experience you want and verify the current YouTube live-stream guidance.

For encoder-based dual-format streaming, YouTube says to use RTMP(S), select the second stream key for the vertical stream, and ensure the horizontal and vertical content match their corresponding keys. Do not send a horizontal composition to the vertical key or vice versa. Interface details can change, so confirm the current setup instructions before a live event.
Rules, copyright, and reused content
A technically successful simulstream is not automatically permitted by every destination. Review each platform’s current rules on simulcasting, exclusivity, content, and monetization; YouTube’s instructions do not establish the rules for Twitch or other services. Make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, graphics, and other material in the broadcast. A live format does not make copyrighted material safe to use, and repeated or reused material can raise separate policy and monetization questions. Check the destination’s current policies before streaming content you did not create or license.

Common multistreaming problems and fixes
- One or more platforms never go live: Check that the destination is connected, the correct ingest details and stream key are used, and the broadcast was started for that destination. Reconnect or replace an exposed or invalid key using the platform’s own instructions.
- Video stutters or drops frames: Compare the chosen output bitrate with sustained upload capacity and reduce the load if necessary. On a local setup, check encoder and computer resource use; on a shared connection, reduce competing traffic or use a more stable connection.
- One destination looks worse than another: Destinations can have different ingest requirements and processing behavior. Check each output’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and status separately rather than assuming one setting fits all.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: Check the encoder’s audio source and settings, then test with representative speech and movement. Confirm the affected destination is receiving the expected feed and monitor sync during the test.
- The vertical stream shows the wrong composition: Confirm the vertical content is assigned to YouTube’s second stream key and that the horizontal and vertical feeds match their respective keys.
- YouTube live access is unavailable: Review channel eligibility and restrictions, and allow at least 24 hours after requesting first-time live enablement. Consult YouTube’s current account-specific guidance rather than assuming the issue is with the encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to play live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option from multistreaming a live camera or show: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or view plans, then start the free first day.
