Vultr is the easier VPS choice to follow for a YouTube loop stream because its official Broadcaster Marketplace guide directly documents an OBS workflow for looping server-stored files. That is a documentation advantage, not evidence of better uptime or performance. DigitalOcean can also host a general-purpose Linux streaming setup, but the official DigitalOcean pages reviewed here do not describe an equivalent ready-made loop-stream guide.
If you want to avoid managing a server, StreamNeo is the simpler alternative: it runs uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, always on, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. For a VPS, compare the current instance resources, outbound-transfer allowance and overage, region, and billing rules before choosing.
Which should you choose?
| What matters to you | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A directly documented loop-stream setup | Vultr | Its Broadcaster Marketplace guide explains using OBS, uploading source files to the server, and using VLC Video Source to loop multiple files for a 24/7 stream. |
| A general-purpose Linux VM and an existing setup you can adapt | Either; compare current plans | DigitalOcean Droplets are Linux virtual machines. The reviewed DigitalOcean documentation does not provide a directly equivalent YouTube loop-stream workflow. Vultr’s tutorial is not a matched performance or price comparison. |
| Evidence that one provider is more reliable or faster | Neither can be declared the winner from the available evidence | No controlled comparison of uptime, CPU use, dropped frames, or latency was conducted. |
| A managed cloud loop without server administration | StreamNeo | It loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free. |
For either VPS, the practical decision depends on the workload and the current plan: CPU, memory, disk space, region, sustained upload capacity, included outbound transfer, and overage cost. A static or low-motion loop may use different resources than real-time transcoding; the tutorials do not establish a minimum instance size for every resolution and frame rate.
What the VPS comparison does—and does not—establish
Vultr: a more direct tutorial path
Vultr’s Broadcaster guide walks through deploying its Broadcaster Marketplace app, opening OBS, uploading source videos to the server, and using VLC Video Source to repeat multiple files. Vultr also has an Ubuntu streaming-server tutorial that names OBS and FFmpeg. These are setup guides, not guarantees that any particular instance size will encode your chosen stream or sustain every workload.

DigitalOcean: general-purpose Droplets
DigitalOcean describes Droplets as Linux virtual machines with CPU, memory, storage, and network bandwidth. Shared and dedicated CPU options exist, but a YouTube loop guide equivalent to Vultr’s was not found in the official pages reviewed. That absence supports a distinction in documentation, not a claim that DigitalOcean cannot host a loop stream.
Do not infer a performance winner
Neither provider’s cited material establishes matched current plans, and no hands-on comparison measured stream health. Before committing, compare like-for-like VM resources and current terms in the provider’s own plan selector. Consider whether you need server-side transcoding: simply replaying a prepared file is a different workload from encoding or converting video in real time.

Calculate bandwidth before selecting a plan
A continuous stream sends data outbound for as long as it runs. Use the bitrate of the actual stream—not the size of the source file—to estimate transfer. A rough decimal estimate is:
outbound GB per month ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 × hours streamed per day × 30

For example, at 10 Mbps for 24 hours each day, the estimate is about 3,240 GB in a 30-day month, before protocol overhead and any other server traffic. This is an estimate for planning, not a provider quote; check how the provider defines and measures transfer and whether its plan allowance is sufficient.
DigitalOcean transfer and billing
DigitalOcean includes outbound transfer, pools usage at the team level, and bills additional outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB, according to its bandwidth billing documentation. Its documentation also describes allowance accruing across a billing cycle; the 1,000 GiB example accrues at about 0.0004 GiB per second, an explanation of accrual rather than a recommended stream allowance.

DigitalOcean’s bundled CPU Droplets remain billable while powered off because resources remain reserved. The pricing documentation states a 672-hour monthly usage cap (28 days) for bundled CPU Droplets; destroying the Droplet ends billing. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing and billing details and verify current terms for the plan you select.
Vultr transfer and current plan details
Vultr’s official documentation describes bandwidth as outbound transfer to the internet, but the sources cited here do not establish a current matching allowance, price, or stopping-billing rule for a loop-stream VM. A Vultr Ubuntu tutorial mentions 3 TB in its own tutorial context; that figure should not be treated as a general current allowance. Check the live plan, region, and billing details before calculating your cost.

Do not use old comparison prices as current quotes
DigitalOcean’s vendor comparison article published example VM prices with an accuracy date of August 18, 2025, and an update date of August 28, 2025. Those dated figures are not current quotes and are not a sound basis for choosing a plan in 2026. Check live provider pricing and calculators instead.

- Deploy the Broadcaster Marketplace instance. Follow the deployment flow in Vultr’s Broadcaster guide. Select a current plan and region only after checking its resources and transfer terms; the guide does not prove that one size suits every stream.
- Put your video files on the server. Upload the files you intend to broadcast to the instance, as the guide’s workflow describes. Confirm that there is enough storage for the playlist and any separate recordings you intend to keep.
- Open OBS on the server and configure the source. Add the video source and use VLC Video Source when you need to play multiple files in sequence or loop them. Confirm the source order and loop behavior before going live.
- Choose the output format and encoder settings. Decide on resolution and frame rate first, then choose a codec and bitrate supported by your server’s sustained upload and the plan’s transfer allowance. Do not assume a tutorial instance can transcode a particular format without checking CPU use under load.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the YouTube stream setup into the encoder. Keep the key private; YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Test privately or unlisted, then monitor. Start a test stream, confirm video and audio, and check YouTube’s stream health before making the broadcast public. Monitor after launch for interruptions, dropped frames, or resource pressure on the VPS.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide rather than treating one number as universal. For a specific example, that guide lists H.264 1080p30 at 14 Mbps and H.264 1080p60 at 17 Mbps.
YouTube recommends RTMPS and specifically advises testing before a broadcast and monitoring stream health. For its stream URL and key workflow, see Manage live stream settings. Set the server’s outbound capacity and the provider transfer budget around the selected bitrate and actual broadcast schedule.
Copyright, archives, and monetization limits
- Clear the rights to every asset. A technically successful loop does not establish permission to use the video, music, artwork, or other material. Follow YouTube’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.
- Do not assume a repetitive format is monetizable. Monetization is subject to channel eligibility and YouTube’s current content policies. The fact that a stream can run continuously does not determine whether a particular loop qualifies or earns revenue.
- Plan for archive limits. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer broadcast will be preserved as one archive; check current YouTube rules and arrange separate recording and storage if you need a complete copy.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect stream URL or key, or encoder not started | Re-copy the URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the encoder destination, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream health reports unstable upload or dropped frames | Insufficient or inconsistent server upload, excessive bitrate, or competing network traffic | Check YouTube stream health and server resource/network use; reduce output bitrate or resolution and verify the provider’s transfer and network terms. |
| Video plays once but does not repeat | Loop or playlist behavior is not configured on the source | Check the VLC Video Source playlist and repeat settings, then test the transition between files before relaunching. |
| Playback stutters or encoding overloads | VM resources may be insufficient for real-time encoding or conversion | Check CPU and memory usage during the stream. If the source is already in the desired format, avoid unnecessary real-time transcoding; otherwise evaluate a VM with suitable resources. |
| Unexpected bill despite stopping the Droplet | Powering off a bundled CPU Droplet does not release reserved resources | On DigitalOcean, destroy the Droplet when finished if you want billing to end, after preserving anything you need. Verify the corresponding billing rule with Vultr rather than assuming it is identical. |
