Compute Engine startup scripts can automate boot-time setup, but they do not by themselves make a playlist loop or guarantee that a stream recovers after a failure. Treat this as a design pattern to implement and test, not a verified one-command recipe.
How the setup works
The VM runs the media files and an encoder. The encoder reads the playlist, sends a live output over the network, and authenticates to YouTube using the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube receives that output as a live broadcast.
This separates the broadcast from your home computer and internet connection, but it does not eliminate operational work. You must provide licensed media, configure looping, secure the stream key, arrange boot-time launch, and test restart and reconnection behavior. YouTube’s [encoder guide](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2907883?hl=en-EN) describes the encoder workflow and says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and follow the prompts to enable streaming if you have not done so. Allow up to 24 hours if YouTube requires activation.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In Live Control Room, create a stream and configure its visibility, title, audience, and other stream details. The exact options may depend on the channel and YouTube’s current interface.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the encoder setup. The encoder sends video to the URL and uses the key to associate it with your broadcast. YouTube documents this flow in its encoder instructions.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or a public repository. Restrict access to the VM and to wherever you store the key. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder configuration.
Choose the encoder output settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions as the starting point for your selected resolution and frame rate. The available bandwidth must sustain the encoder’s output; choose a bitrate based on YouTube’s table and the VM’s measured network capacity rather than assuming a particular VM can support a particular quality.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Video: YouTube recommends H.264 and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube recommends AAC or MP3.
- Resolution and bitrate: Select a combination from YouTube’s published table and test it against the VM’s actual available upload capacity.
Before relying on the stream, test with media that has similar motion and audio to the playlist. YouTube recommends checking stream health and messages while testing; see its streaming tips.
Build the playlist and automate the VM
Choose a VM region, operating system, and machine capacity suitable for your encoder and intended output. Place or fetch media files that you have the rights to stream, install an encoder, and configure it to read the playlist and repeat it. The exact looping option depends on the encoder and playlist format; no single command or VM size is established here as a tested solution.

Use a secure mechanism to provide the stream URL and key to the encoder. Then configure a Compute Engine startup script or another boot-time mechanism to install or start the required software. Google Cloud’s startup-script documentation explains how scripts run when a VM boots and can automate setup or process launch when prerequisites are met. A startup script alone does not configure playlist looping, monitor the process, or guarantee reconnection.
- Provision the VM and required storage in the chosen region.
- Transfer or fetch the licensed media and prepare the playlist in the format your chosen encoder supports.
- Install and configure the encoder, including the playlist repeat behavior and YouTube output settings.
- Provide the stream URL and key securely, avoiding exposure in source code or logs.
- Configure startup automation to launch the encoder after its files, credentials, and network requirements are ready.
- Implement and verify how the process behaves if the encoder exits, the VM reboots, or YouTube drops the connection. Do not assume boot automation handles these cases without testing.
Test before relying on a 24/7 broadcast
- Start the encoder and wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room.
- Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and messages; use its live streaming error messages page to investigate reported problems.
- Watch the public or unlisted watch page from another device, and verify audio, video, and playback on mobile as well as desktop.
- Test a planned VM restart and an encoder restart. Confirm the playlist resumes and determine what action is required if the stream disconnects.
- Review logs and YouTube’s status after the test. Do not treat a successful initial preview as proof of uninterrupted operation.
Continuous streaming is not the same as continuous archiving
YouTube’s documentation states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement does not establish that one event longer than 12 hours will be archived, nor does it validate a particular segmentation workaround. Plan for the distinction between keeping a broadcast running and preserving a complete replay, and consult YouTube’s live stream settings and current archive guidance for your intended workflow.

Estimate Compute Engine costs
There is no reliable single total without choosing a region, VM type, disk and storage arrangement, external IP resources, network usage, and runtime. VM CPU and memory, disks, and external IP resources can contribute to the bill. Check the Compute Engine pricing page for the actual configuration and assumptions you plan to use; the instance lifecycle documentation helps explain resource and instance states relevant to billing.
