You can configure Wirecast on a VPS to send a continuous stream to YouTube, but treat the setup as a workload-specific deployment—not a vendor-certified configuration. Wirecast documents desktop operating systems and hardware requirements, not VPS support. Before paying for a host, verify its operating system, graphics and encoding capabilities, sustained CPU/GPU performance, outbound bandwidth, and provider restrictions, then test the exact stream profile you intend to run.
How do I run Wirecast on a VPS?
The practical sequence is to confirm that the channel can go live, validate the VPS against Wirecast’s requirements, install and configure Wirecast, connect YouTube, and run a sustained test before relying on the stream. A VPS’s advertised vCPU count alone does not establish that it can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously.
- Check live-stream access. Confirm that YouTube live streaming is enabled for the channel and that no channel restriction prevents the broadcast. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before scheduling the stream.
- Validate the VPS. Compare the host’s operating system and actual CPU/GPU capabilities with the requirements for your Wirecast release. Verify that the virtual machine exposes any hardware encoding you plan to use, can sustain the selected workload, has enough outbound bandwidth, and permits the needed network traffic. Do not assume that a Windows VPS is automatically compatible.
- Install and activate Wirecast. Install the release appropriate to the VPS operating system and confirm that it launches and can access the available encoding resources. Wirecast’s published specifications list Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11 compatibility; check the current requirements for your exact release before provisioning. The published minimum of 8 GB RAM is not a guarantee of smooth high-resolution or 60 fps encoding; Wirecast lists 16 GB or more as its recommended/optimal target. - Prepare the stream in Wirecast. Set up the video and audio sources or media you intend to broadcast, then choose an output profile that the virtual host and its network can sustain. Confirm that the program output is the content you expect before sending it live.
- Connect the YouTube destination. In Wirecast, open Output Settings, choose YouTube, authenticate the Google account, and configure the stream using the controls shown in your installed release. Wirecast’s native YouTube integration handles server routing and the stream key in that workflow. Alternatively, YouTube’s generic encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key entered in the encoder. Follow the current controls in Wirecast rather than relying on a label that may differ between releases.
- Run a representative test. Test the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, and amount of motion for long enough to expose sustained-load or connection problems. Watch Wirecast for dropped-frame or connection indications, inspect CPU/GPU use on the host, and check YouTube’s stream-health status before treating the configuration as ready.
- Define how a person will respond to failure. Decide who will receive alerts and how the stream will be checked and restarted or reconnected if Wirecast, the VPS, or the network fails. Monitoring in YouTube does not itself restart a failed encoder.
Can I stream to YouTube 24/7 with Wirecast?
A VPS can keep the computer hosting Wirecast away from your home setup, but a continuous broadcast still depends on a compatible virtual machine, a stable outbound connection, sustained encoding capacity, and an operating plan for failures. The reviewed Wirecast documentation does not establish VPS support or a universal automatic restart setup. Do not describe the result as unattended or guaranteed until your own test and recovery procedure support that expectation.

YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include these example bitrates. They are platform guidance, not a promise that a particular VPS can encode or upload at those settings.

YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose the Wirecast settings available in your release to match the target profile and those platform recommendations. Wirecast’s upload-bandwidth planning baseline is total stream bitrate multiplied by two; test sustained throughput from the actual VPS and retain headroom for network variation. Opening every port listed for Wirecast features is not necessary for a simple YouTube output: check the provider and firewall rules, and allow only traffic your selected workflow needs. Wirecast’s specifications describe its bandwidth baseline.
Test more than a static screen
Use content representative of the actual broadcast, including its normal movement and audio. A static image may not reveal whether the VPS can sustain the intended real-time encode under a more demanding scene. During the test, compare host resource use with Wirecast’s connection and dropped-frame indications, then inspect YouTube’s stream health. If the output is unstable, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again instead of assuming that a larger advertised vCPU number will solve it.

Keep the stream key private
With Wirecast’s native YouTube workflow, authenticate and configure the destination through the integration. If you use YouTube’s generic encoder flow, copy the stream URL and key from YouTube into Wirecast. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or place it in shared notes. If you believe it has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it and update the encoder configuration.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream?
Not reliably as one complete archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That archive limit is separate from whether the VPS can keep sending video. If preserving YouTube VODs matters, plan separate broadcast sessions comfortably shorter than 12 hours rather than relying on a single multi-day event. Plan a separate recording if the archive matters
YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. On a VPS, confirm available storage, retention policy, and any associated hosting costs before enabling a long recording. A backup file is useful only if the host has enough capacity and the file can be retained or retrieved when needed.
What can go wrong, and how should you troubleshoot it?
- Wirecast will not install or run: Recheck the operating system against the requirements for the installed release and confirm the VPS provides the resources Wirecast expects. VPS compatibility is not established by the cited Wirecast specifications; ask the provider and Wirecast support about the exact environment rather than assuming the virtual machine is supported.
- Encoding overload or dropped frames: Check host CPU/GPU use and Wirecast’s output status during the representative test. Verify that hardware encoding is actually available to the virtual machine if the profile depends on it. Reduce output demands and repeat the test if the host cannot sustain the profile.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the connection drops: Check the VPS’s sustained outbound throughput, firewall/provider restrictions, and Wirecast’s connection status. Compare available upload capacity with Wirecast’s planning baseline of twice the total stream bitrate; lower the output bitrate if the connection cannot reliably support it.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm the selected YouTube destination and account in Wirecast, or recheck the stream URL and key if using the generic encoder workflow. If a key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and replace it in the encoder.
- The stream stops and does not return: Inspect Wirecast, the VPS, and YouTube’s stream status to identify where the failure occurred, then follow the restart or reconnect procedure you established. The available documentation describes health monitoring, not universal automatic recovery for a failed Wirecast process, host, or network.
- The long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive: Check the session duration. Streams beyond 12 hours may not be captured; use shorter sessions and a separate recording plan if archives are required.
