Budget about 0.45 GB of mobile data per hour for every sustained 1 Mbps of stream bitrate, before overhead. That works out to roughly 1.8 GB per hour at 4 Mbps and 2.7 GB per hour at 6 Mbps. These are bitrate-based estimates—not measurements of Indian mobile networks or guarantees of what a carrier will deduct.
How much data does PRISM Live Studio use per hour?
The main driver is the bitrate PRISM sends to YouTube. PRISM describes bitrate as the amount of data sent each second; a higher bitrate generally means more data and can support better picture quality. Using the decimal-byte calculation, 1 Mbps sustained for an hour is about 450 MB, or 0.45 GB, before overhead. For a specific bitrate, estimate data with this rule: bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 = approximate decimal GB per hour. Multiply that hourly estimate by the planned number of hours. For example, 4 Mbps × 0.45 is about 1.8 GB per hour; over three hours, that is about 5.4 GB.

What can make the actual data use different?
Adaptive bitrate and changing networks
When PRISM’s Adaptive Bitrate Publish (ABP) is enabled, the app changes stream quality and bitrate as network conditions change. If the bitrate falls below its initial or selected level, data use may be lower than an estimate based on a sustained maximum, but picture quality can fall too. With adaptation off, PRISM documents bitrate ranges by resolution and says the connection must sustain the selected stream. PRISM Live Studio mobile streaming guide
Overhead and phone activity
The estimates count encoded stream bitrate using decimal GB and do not include transport overhead, bitrate variation, audio beyond what is reflected in the stream bitrate, or other phone activity. A carrier’s usage counter can therefore differ. This estimate is for uploading your livestream from the phone to YouTube; it does not estimate the data viewers use to watch it.

Resolution and frame rate
Resolution and frame rate influence the bitrate and quality you may choose, but neither gives a fixed data amount by itself. Check the bitrate actually selected or displayed in PRISM and calculate from that rate. PRISM’s live-stream status indicator displays the current bitrate and remaining battery. How to estimate data for your India mobile stream
- Check your stream settings in PRISM. Before going live, note the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Use the rate shown or selected rather than assuming every stream at a given resolution uses the same bitrate.
- Calculate the planned upload. Multiply bitrate in Mbps by 0.45 to estimate decimal GB per hour, then multiply by the expected duration. At 6 Mbps for a three-hour session, for example, the estimate is about 8.1 GB before overhead.
- Choose a data-saving setting if needed. Lower the bitrate or resolution to reduce the estimate. You can also consider leaving ABP on; it may lower quality and data use as network conditions worsen. - Measure your own setup if precision matters. Note your phone’s mobile-data counter immediately before and after a short or private test using the same network and settings. This is a suggested way to measure your own connection, not a reported test result.
- Leave a buffer in your plan. The estimate cannot account for how a particular Indian operator counts overhead, rounds usage, or applies plan-specific fair-use terms. Check your own plan and coverage where you intend to stream; these figures do not establish current operator allowances, prices, or upload performance.
Will your mobile connection be enough?
Data allowance is only one constraint. A livestream also needs a stable upload connection that can sustain the selected bitrate. A plan with enough GB may still struggle if upload performance fluctuates at the location or during a crowded event. PRISM’s published guide and FAQ provide bitrate guidance, but no India-wide carrier-meter measurement establishes exactly how much a mobile operator will deduct for a given session. Treat the calculations as a planning baseline, then use a short test on your own phone and network when the allowance is tight.
