You can stream a video saved on your computer to YouTube Live by adding it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, connecting OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with your stream key, and starting the stream. Use Media Source for one file; use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist. The computer must stay on and connected while OBS is streaming.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s age requirement: the streamer must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- OBS installed on the computer that holds the video files.
- The video and audio files you have the rights to stream. Having a local copy does not automatically grant streaming rights; streams must comply with YouTube’s policies and rights requirements.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate, plus room for normal fluctuations.
Choose a source for one video or a playlist
One video: Media Source
In OBS, add a Media Source to a scene and select the local file. Turn on Loop if you want that single file to repeat. OBS documents support for containers including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, but a listed container does not guarantee every file or codec combination will play correctly in every setup. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Several videos: VLC Video
For a sequence of files, add a VLC Video source and build its playlist. Keep Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the sequence; choose shuffle only if you want the order randomized. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The source and playlist controls are described in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Add the video to an OBS scene and check audio
- Open OBS and select or create the scene you want to stream.
- In the Sources dock, select +, then choose Media Source for one file or VLC Video for a playlist.
- Create the source, browse to the video or add playlist items, and enable the appropriate loop option if needed.
- Check the preview. Resize or position the source in the canvas so the video fills the intended area without unwanted cropping or empty space.
- Watch the audio mixer while the video plays. Confirm the file’s audio is present and that unintended microphone or desktop audio is not being sent. OBS scenes combine sources, so review the sources in the scene as well as the mixer; see the OBS Sources Guide.
If the file is silent, verify that its audio is present, the source is not muted, and the mixer shows activity during playback. If the preview is blank, recheck the selected file path and whether its format and codec play locally.

Create a YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. You can schedule an event or set up a stream for immediate use. YouTube’s workflow is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. Reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed or compromised. Details are in YouTube’s stream settings guide.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is available in the service list and enter or paste the stream key. If configuring a custom service, use the server URL and key supplied by YouTube. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends encrypted RTMPS delivery; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Apply the settings and return to the main OBS window. Do not put the key in a public document, chat, recording, or screenshot.
Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
Use output settings that the source, encoder, and upload connection can sustain. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution file or selecting a frame rate higher than the source simply because the option is available. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table lists these H.264 examples:
| Output | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can maintain the selected bitrate. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and up to 60 fps. For RTMP/RTMPS, its listed video codecs include H.264, H.265, and AV1, with AAC or MP3 audio. Encoder options may depend on the hardware and software available on your computer.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Keep the combined stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; shared network use and connection disruptions can still cause problems. Check YouTube’s streaming tips and test using the same network you will use for the event.
Latency and DVR
For a prerecorded feed without audience interaction, low latency is usually less important than dependable playback; YouTube notes that lower latency can increase viewer buffering. You can set stream latency and DVR options in YouTube’s live stream settings. DVR lets viewers pause or rewind live video, but its availability is limited on streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Test the stream before the event
- Start the encoder from OBS using Start Streaming. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live when ready.
- Check the YouTube preview for the right scene, picture framing, and audible program audio. Review stream health in Live Control Room rather than assuming that a successful OBS connection means viewers receive a healthy stream.
- Test with movement and audio similar to the real content, and monitor for buffering, dropped frames, or audio problems. YouTube recommends setting up encoder streams at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
For a scheduled broadcast, prepare the source and settings early enough to correct problems before the event. A local video stream is still dependent on the computer, OBS, and home or office connection remaining available.
End the broadcast and check the archive
When finished, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop sending from OBS according to the Live Control Room flow. Confirm that the event has ended. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; check the stream page after the event if you need to confirm the archive is available. For a local backup, use OBS recording separately and confirm the recording is being written to the intended storage location.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The Media Source is blank: Check that the file path still exists and that the selected source points to the right file. Confirm the file’s container and codec are playable in your environment; format-list support alone does not ensure every file will work.
- The video plays but viewers hear nothing: Check source mute and mixer levels, then confirm that the media source’s audio is routed to the stream mix. Play the file in OBS and watch for mixer activity.
- A playlist source is missing: Install VLC and restart OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube shows no incoming signal: Verify that OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube service/server and that the stream key belongs to the selected event. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
- The preview buffers or stream health is poor: Reduce the output bitrate or resolution, check other devices using the connection, and retest with upload headroom. Keep the stream bitrate within YouTube’s guidance for the chosen output.
- The video ends instead of repeating: Enable Loop on a Media Source or Loop Playlist on VLC Video, depending on the source type.
- The stream stops when the computer sleeps or loses connection: Keep the computer awake, OBS running, and network connected for the full broadcast. For a long-running channel, consider whether a local setup’s power, network, and recovery needs are acceptable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube channel to stay live without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is for prerecorded video, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
