For automating OBS actions, Advanced Scene Switcher is the best-supported plugin fit; for looping videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source; and for remote control, use OBS WebSocket, which is built into OBS 28 and later. They solve different tasks, and none guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. A dependable setup also needs a working media playlist, a configured YouTube stream, and a computer, power supply, and internet connection that remain available.
Which OBS plugin or feature should you use?
| Need | Best-supported fit | What it does | Limits and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schedule or trigger scene and media actions | Advanced Scene Switcher | Build macros from conditions and actions, including date/time, media, file, streaming, and scene-related controls. | The OBS Project Forums listing for version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, gives OBS 31.1.1 as the minimum. Confirm OS-specific installer and compatibility before installing. Automation is not an uptime guarantee. Check the current resource listing. [c005] [c008] |
| Loop a rotating or repeated set of videos | OBS VLC Video source | Plays multiple media items as a playlist, with loop and shuffle settings. | Install VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This is a source in OBS, not a separate automation plugin. OBS media-source documentation. [c003] |
| Control scenes or sources externally | OBS WebSocket | Lets external tools control scenes and sources. | Included by default from OBS 28 onward. Protect access with a password. It does not itself schedule a stream or keep the computer online. OBS Remote Control Guide. [c002] |
| Send the broadcast to YouTube | OBS encoder setup and YouTube Live Control Room | Connect using YouTube’s stream URL and key, or an encoder’s YouTube integration; schedule a broadcast when you want to promote it. | YouTube’s setup guide does not promise unattended continuity. Its automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not establish archive behavior for longer broadcasts. YouTube encoder setup. [c001] |
For a common 24/7 playlist workflow, combine the VLC source with Advanced Scene Switcher only if you need conditional actions such as changing scenes at a set time or reacting to a media condition. Add WebSocket only if an external controller needs to operate OBS. These features are complementary, not interchangeable.
Set up a looping YouTube stream in OBS
- Enable YouTube live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours. Complete this before your planned start. YouTube’s encoder guide. [c001]
- Prepare and test your video files. Keep the files accessible on the computer running OBS. Decide whether the broadcast needs one repeated video or a playlist, and check that each item has the intended audio and picture.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene, add the media files to its playlist, and set loop or shuffle as appropriate. Install VLC first; match its architecture to OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC). [c003]
- Install Advanced Scene Switcher if you need macros. Check the plugin’s current OBS minimum and the installer for your operating system. The listing current on October 3, 2026 identifies version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, with OBS 31.1.1 as its minimum supported version. Back up your settings before upgrades, as the plugin’s update notes advise. Plugin compatibility can change as OBS changes. [c005] [c008] OBS plugin guidance. [c007]
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Use YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, or choose YouTube integration if your encoder offers it. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Follow the current YouTube Live Control Room and OBS prompts rather than relying on an old screenshot or fixed interface path. [c001]
- Choose encoder settings for your source and connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using its current guidance and your available upload capacity; there is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every broadcast. YouTube live encoder settings. [c006]
- Run a representative test and monitor stream health. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual content, check OBS output and YouTube’s stream-health messages, and confirm that the playlist advances and loops as intended. [c006]
- Schedule the YouTube event if useful. Scheduling can help promote a stream, but scheduling in YouTube is separate from automating scenes or media in OBS. [c001]
What a 24/7 OBS setup can—and cannot—automate
A plugin can execute OBS actions, but a continuous broadcast depends on more than plugin behavior. The OBS computer must stay powered on, the operating system and OBS must keep running, the network must remain available, the media source must continue playing, and YouTube must continue receiving the stream. A macro that responds to a condition is not proof that the whole chain will recover after every failure.
OBS’s developer guidance describes plugins, scripts, and WebSocket as extension and control mechanisms; plugins may need recompilation for later OBS versions. The reviewed official pages do not provide comparative uptime tests for these plugins or validate a specific unattended recovery configuration. Plan to monitor the broadcast and decide how you will respond to a dropped stream, a frozen source, an OBS crash, or a power or network outage. [c002] [c005] [c007]

Secure and maintain the automation
- Protect remote control. If you enable WebSocket, set a password and limit access to trusted tools. WebSocket is built into OBS 28 and later; older releases may need a separate legacy download. [c002]
- Check compatibility before updates. Verify the plugin’s current supported OBS version and OS installer, and back up OBS and plugin settings before upgrading. OBS notes that plugins may require recompilation for later versions. [c005] [c007] Advanced Scene Switcher listing. [c008]
- Use media you have rights to stream. A playlist being technically playable does not establish permission to broadcast its contents. Check licenses and permissions for music, video, images, and other included material. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from OBS automation.
- Do not assume a long stream will be archived. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish what happens to sessions of 12 hours or longer. [c001]
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC source is missing or will not load | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and make sure 64-bit OBS has 64-bit VLC; then reopen OBS and check the source again. [c003] |
| The playlist stops instead of repeating | Loop is not enabled, or the playlist/source has not been configured as intended. | Review the VLC Video source’s playlist and loop setting, then test the full sequence before going live. [c003] |
| Advanced Scene Switcher will not install or load | The OBS version or operating-system installer may not meet the plugin listing’s requirements. | Check the current listing. Version 1.36.1 lists OBS 31.1.1 as its minimum; do not assume compatibility with an older OBS release. [c005] [c008] |
| An external controller cannot operate OBS | WebSocket may be unavailable, disabled, or using authentication the controller does not have. | For OBS 28 or later, check OBS’s remote-control settings and the controller’s connection details; use the configured password. [c002] |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The stream key or URL may be wrong, live streaming may not yet be enabled, or the connection/encoder settings may be unsuitable. | Recheck the YouTube encoder setup, confirm first-time enablement is complete, and review YouTube stream-health messages. Use RTMPS and settings suited to your connection. [c001] [c006] |
| The stream drops while the computer is unattended | A plugin cannot prevent every host, power, network, encoder, or YouTube ingest failure. | Check the relevant system and stream-health messages, then use your planned recovery procedure. Do not treat a scene-switching macro as a guarantee of reconnection. [c001] [c005] [c007] |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded recordings without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera or stream to other platforms.
