You can run a prerecorded YouTube stream from a Docker container by having FFmpeg read a media file, pace it in real time, and send it to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Docker packages the process; it does not make the broadcast self-healing. You still need to watch FFmpeg and YouTube’s preview, plan for interruptions, and decide how you will handle YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits.
How the Docker and FFmpeg setup works
There are three separate parts to this workflow:
- Docker runs a container on a computer or remote host. It does not supply the video or YouTube connection details.
- FFmpeg reads a file, optionally transforms it, and publishes the resulting stream. The example below asks FFmpeg to copy the file’s existing audio and video streams rather than re-encode them.
- YouTube Live Control Room supplies the stream URL and stream key, receives the feed, and shows whether the incoming signal is available for preview.
The command is a starting template, not a tested deployment or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Docker image choice, host requirements, media compatibility, and YouTube encoding requirements depend on your setup. The guidance cited here does not establish a universal Docker image, host specification, or bitrate and codec settings.
Check YouTube eligibility and create the stream
Before setting up the container, verify that the channel is eligible to live stream. YouTube’s current Help guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Consult YouTube Help’s “Get started with live streaming” for current eligibility details.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from its settings. Use the URL YouTube provides; do not guess an ingest address or assume that an old URL is still the right one.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as being like the stream’s password and address. Do not put one in a public repository, screenshot, shared command, or published configuration. If someone else gets it, reset it in the stream settings and update your encoder.
- Check the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Their behavior depends on the settings you choose. In a scheduled-stream workflow, start the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, then use Live Control Room’s Go live control when required.
Use RTMPS and prepare the FFmpeg output
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. YouTube supports it and recommends using the RTMPS server URL supplied in Live Control Room when your encoder supports it. Copy that URL rather than substituting a generic RTMP address. FFmpeg documents RTMP output through the FLV muxer and shows real-time pacing with -re.

For a file that should repeat, FFmpeg’s stream-loop option can ask it to loop the input. The command below is a template for a trusted FFmpeg-containing image you have chosen. Replace IMAGE with that image’s name, mount the directory containing your video, and set YOUTUBE_OUTPUT to the output address in the form required by your Live Control Room stream settings. Depending on the address YouTube provides, the key may be entered separately or as part of the final output address; follow the instructions shown for that stream.
docker run --rm
--mount type=bind,source=/absolute/path/to/media,target=/media,readonly
IMAGE
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /media/video.mp4
-c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_OUTPUT"
This illustrates how the pieces fit together; it does not prescribe a particular Docker image or guarantee that stream-copy will work for every file or YouTube ingest configuration. Make sure the host path exists and the container can read the mounted file. If FFmpeg reports that the file’s streams or output are incompatible, check the media and output requirements for your use case. Re-encoding may be necessary, but no single set of codec, resolution, frame-rate, or bitrate settings is established here as right for every stream.

Set the output address and key without publishing them. A key typed directly into a saved shell command can remain in shell history, and command-line arguments may be visible to users with access to the host or process information. Avoid shared terminals and public logs, restrict access to the host, and do not commit the value to source control. The example deliberately uses a variable rather than displaying a real key; how you set and protect it depends on your host and deployment.
Start the feed and confirm it reached YouTube
- Start the Docker command from the host that has access to the media directory and network.
- Read the FFmpeg output. Confirm that FFmpeg opened the input and is continuing to send output; a running container alone does not prove that viewers can watch the stream.
- Open the stream in Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. If the stream is scheduled and not set to go live automatically, click Go live after the preview appears.
- Check picture and sound in the preview and, where appropriate, from the channel or watch page and a mobile device. Keep monitoring quality rather than assuming that a successful initial connection will remain healthy.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend monitoring the encoder, checking a local archive file while it grows, testing failover behavior, and verifying access from watch or channel pages and mobile devices. Keep a local recording if preserving the full program matters.

Plan for interruptions instead of assuming Docker will recover
FFmpeg documents reconnect options for certain TCP and TLS errors, but that is partial fault handling—not proof that one command can recover from every failure. The process can still stop, the host or network can fail, or YouTube can stop receiving the feed. A Docker container being configured to restart would not, by itself, establish that the same YouTube event reconnects correctly or that every ingest interruption is handled.
- Watch both sides: inspect FFmpeg output and confirm the feed in Live Control Room. If YouTube has no preview, a live-looking container is not enough.
- Keep a local archive: monitor that the recording is actually being written and has usable audio and video. A live ingest connection is not a substitute for a backup.
- Test recovery deliberately: test your own encoder recovery or failover process before depending on it. YouTube’s operational tips recommend testing failover; no recovery behavior is guaranteed by the sample command.
- Have an operator or monitoring plan: a stream that needs to stay up requires a way to notice problems and respond. A shell command alone cannot provide that assurance.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
Do not rely on a single stream lasting more than 12 hours to create a replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends making a local archive as a backup. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If a YouTube replay matters, plan sessions comfortably shorter than 12 hours, use a deliberate stop-and-restart workflow, and record locally. Splitting a broadcast does not establish that viewer continuity, notifications, or other stream behavior will be preserved, so do not promise those outcomes.

You can run a self-managed container on an existing computer or a remote host, provided it can access the media and remain available for the stream. YouTube’s general encoder guidance describes computer-based streaming workflows, but the available guidance here does not establish minimum CPU, memory, or network capacity for this prerecorded workload. A mini PC is only one possible host, not a required purchase or a specified solution.
