First check OBS’s dropped-frames counter. If it is rising, troubleshoot the connection from your computer to YouTube and the bitrate. If it stays at zero while viewers buffer, check playback conditions and latency settings. If OBS’s preview or a local recording is choppy, look at encoder and system load instead. Those symptoms point to different parts of the stream, so changing settings at random can make the problem harder to diagnose.

Identify which part of the stream is buffering

“Buffering” can describe three different problems: OBS dropping frames while sending to YouTube, viewers having trouble playing a stream that OBS sends normally, or OBS struggling to render or encode its output. Start with the symptom you can observe, then change one setting at a time and retest.

  • OBS dropped frames are increasing: investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server and whether the configured bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains that dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate.
  • No OBS dropped frames, but viewers report buffering: check viewer networks and devices, and review the stream’s latency setting.
  • OBS preview or local recording is choppy: check rendering, encoding, and system load before treating it as an upload problem.

If OBS is dropping frames

Watch the dropped-frames counter at the bottom of OBS while streaming. If it rises, use these checks in order. After each change, retest so you can tell whether it helped.

  1. Set a bitrate your connection can sustain. In OBS, open Settings → Output and lower the video bitrate if needed. OBS’s troubleshooting article, dated 2024-09-30, suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed; treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Base your decision on stable upload capacity, not a best-case speed-test result. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup feeds where applicable. See OBS’s guidance and YouTube’s streaming tips.
  2. Use Ethernet if you can. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A wired connection is a useful test when wireless instability is suspected, not a guaranteed fix. If trouble continues, check cables and network hardware; restarting the modem or router may help with general connectivity problems.
  3. Test a different ingest server, if available. In OBS, try another server offered for the YouTube service. A different route can help identify whether the issue is specific to an ingest path. Trying another streaming service is useful only as a diagnostic comparison, not a YouTube fix.
  4. Check software and network configuration. Temporarily test whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, bundled network-prioritization software, or outdated network drivers are affecting OBS traffic. Change one suspected factor at a time, retest, then restore protections and settings you have ruled out.
  5. On Windows, test OBS’s network options if needed. OBS documents network optimizations, TCP pacing, and dynamic bitrate adjustment. Its article labels dynamic bitrate beta; it may reduce quality and does not repair the underlying connection. Only use options available in your installed OBS version.
  6. Contact your ISP if the problem persists. Congestion or routing problems may be outside OBS and your local setup.

Match OBS output settings to YouTube’s recommendations

Compare like with like: YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. These figures are current guidance on YouTube’s live encoder settings page, checked 2026-10-03; the page did not display a publication date. They are recommendations, not proof your connection can sustain that bitrate. YouTube also lists minimum ranges; do not confuse a minimum with the recommended value. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Video codec Output YouTube-recommended bitrate
H.264 720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
H.264 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
H.264 1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; CBR bitrate encoding; and keyframes every two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. OBS’s available encoders and controls depend on its version and your hardware, so use the settings your installed build supports. Leave bandwidth headroom rather than setting the video bitrate equal to your measured upload speed.

If viewers buffer but OBS has no dropped frames

When OBS sends without dropping frames, one viewer’s buffering does not by itself show that your ingest connection is failing. Viewers have different networks, devices, and locations. Ask affected viewers to try another device or network, and check whether the issue is widespread or limited to particular viewers.

YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers, but playback still depends on each viewer’s conditions. Also consider latency: YouTube’s live settings guidance warns that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. If immediate interaction is not essential, weigh that trade-off when choosing a latency setting. YouTube’s latency guidance and live streaming troubleshooting provide further context.

If the OBS preview or recording is choppy

If the preview or a local recording already looks or sounds poor, investigate rendering and encoding rather than assuming an upload failure. YouTube advises checking the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, and a local archive; if the encoder output is healthy, then check the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance describes these checks.

  • Reduce game graphics load and simplify OBS scenes.
  • Limit resource-heavy browser sources and filters.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator when GPU overload is the suspected cause.

OBS notes that overloaded GPU resources can affect rendering and encoding. These steps reduce production load; they will not fix an unstable network route. See OBS’s encoding performance guide.
