In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and check stream health and its error messages; compare that with the encoder preview and reports from viewers. Then troubleshoot the failing part: upload capacity, encoder settings, local source or software, or the viewer’s connection.
Why is my YouTube live stream unstable?
“Unstable” can mean the encoder is not sending a healthy stream to YouTube, or that viewers are having trouble playing a stream YouTube received. Those need different fixes. For an encoder broadcast, inspect stream health in Live Control Room and compare it with what you see and hear in the encoder preview. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends using dashboard errors to identify the issue.
- If the picture or sound is already bad in the encoder preview, investigate the camera, microphone, source routing, encoder software, and computer load.
- If the preview and local recording look and sound healthy but YouTube reports delivery trouble, investigate upload capacity, network reliability, and encoder-to-YouTube connection settings.
- If only one viewer reports a problem, it may be local to that viewer’s device or connection. Reports from several viewers on one shared network may point to that network; reports from viewers on different connections make a broadcast-side problem more plausible. Viewer reports are clues, not proof.
How do I check whether my upload connection is the problem?
Test upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube notes that incoming download bandwidth is often higher than outgoing upload bandwidth. The total bitrate of the stream must fit within available upload capacity, and YouTube recommends leaving 20% room. Other people and devices sharing a home or office connection reduce the capacity available to your broadcast. If you send a primary and backup stream, both use outbound bandwidth. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; see its streaming tips.
- Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to your planned broadcast, including the same network and typical household or office use.
- Compare the result with the stream’s total bitrate, including audio, and keep the recommended headroom rather than setting a bitrate equal to the speed-test result.
- If Wi-Fi may be the weak link, compare it with a wired Ethernet connection. This is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix; it will not resolve an ISP, encoder, or YouTube-side fault.
- If upload tests show persistent problems, contact your internet service provider.
What bitrate and encoder settings should I use?
Pick a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s published encoder recommendations below are for H.264; they are platform guidance, not a guarantee that your particular connection will hold steady. Other supported codecs, including H.265/HEVC and AV1, have separate recommendations. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before a broadcast because its published values can change.

Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), use a 2-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed 4 seconds, following YouTube’s published settings. Test at the resolution and frame rate you plan to use. If your upload capacity is marginal, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than forcing a rate your connection cannot reliably carry. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats for viewers, so a lower, stable input can still be preferable to an unreliable high-rate feed.
How do I tell whether the encoder or source is failing?
- Update the encoder software to its latest version.
- Check the video and audio directly in the encoder preview. Confirm the intended camera, microphone, and other sources are selected and routed correctly.
- Review encoder error messages and CPU load. If the computer is overloaded, reduce processing demands or output settings and test again.
- Check the local recording, if you are making one. A bad local file points toward the source or encoding chain; a healthy local file alongside unstable YouTube delivery points more toward outbound connectivity or the connection to YouTube.
- If the cause is still unclear, test with a different encoder. If third-party software logs in without a stream key and fails to start, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team; it may need an update for YouTube Live compatibility.
Why can’t my encoder connect to YouTube Live?
Use the RTMPS server address shown in Live Control Room rather than guessing the URL or assuming the displayed default RTMP address is the one to enter. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Its RTMPS instructions explain the protocol.

- SSL error: Verify that the server address uses RTMPS and is the correct address. If it is correct, YouTube says to try port 443.
- “Failed to connect to server — connection timed out”: Check the server URL first, then confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS. If it does not, follow the encoder maker’s protocol instructions or YouTube’s compatibility guidance.
How should I test and monitor before going live?
Test in advance with audio and video movement similar to the real event. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a guarantee against failure.
- Start the encoder early and preview the incoming feed in Live Control Room before beginning the event.
- Watch stream health and continuously monitor video and audio during the broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance covers the dashboard metrics available.
- If using failover, test it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm the player switches to the backup. Ensure the network has enough upload capacity for both streams.
- If recording locally, verify that the archive file appears and continues to grow during the event.
What if the stream is unstable only for viewers?
A viewer who sees buffering or playback errors does not, by that fact alone, prove that the encoder feed is unstable. Ask which device, connection, and playback steps produce the problem. Have the viewer try another device or internet connection and follow YouTube’s streaming and video playback troubleshooting.

Broadcast delay is a separate setting from encoder latency. Lower delay can reduce the buffer available to viewers and make interruptions more likely; YouTube says default delay is best for minimizing interruptions, while lower delay prioritizes reducing live spoilers. If stable playback matters more than the smallest live delay, consider using the default rather than lowering it.
