Google Maps can help you plan and organize a trip before you set off: save and share places, explore neighborhoods, download a map for limited offline use, and measure distances or work with coordinates. The steps and feature availability vary by platform, so the instructions below identify where Google’s help pages specify a particular device.
Google’s Android feature overview covers these uses alongside navigation.
1. Save places in a list and share it
Lists turn saved places into a shortlist you can revisit, such as restaurants to consider or stops for an itinerary. Google documents these list features and desktop steps in its desktop guide to creating a list of places.
- On desktop, open Google Maps and select Saved.
- Create a new list.
- Search for a place, open its place card, and save it to the list.
You can share a list by link, choosing whether it is private or viewable by anyone who has the link. You can also invite others to edit a shared list or follow another person’s list. One important exception: starred places cannot be shared.

Google also supports exporting saved lists through Google Takeout. This is useful if you want an export of your saved places, rather than just a link others can open.
2. Explore a destination before you go
Use Explore to get a feel for what is around a selected area. Google’s Android getting-started guide describes reviews and descriptions for popular establishments and hotspots, along with ways to look for local events, restaurants, and things to do.

Where Street View imagery is available, it can help you inspect a place and its surroundings more closely. Coverage and imagery vary by area, so Street View should be treated as a preview—not a guarantee that every location has imagery or that it reflects current conditions. Google’s feature overview describes Street View and other Maps features.
3. Download a map area for offline use
If you expect to lose connectivity, download the relevant area while you are online. Google’s instructions here are specifically for Google Maps on iPhone and iPad.

- Search for a place and open its details.
- Choose the option to download an offline map. Alternatively, open Offline maps and select a custom area.
- Before going offline, check that the area you downloaded includes your intended route.
Offline guidance has limits. The entire route must fit inside the saved map area. Offline transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable; offline driving directions do not include traffic information or alternate routes. Downloads are also unavailable in some countries and regions, including because of contractual limits, language support, or address formats.

Google Maps can measure the distance between two or more points and find or search for latitude and longitude coordinates, as described in Google’s feature overview. A distance measurement can help with basic map-based planning, while coordinates can identify or share a precise point.

Treat a map measurement as an estimate for planning, not a survey-grade measurement. The overview confirms these capabilities but does not establish detailed, current controls for every platform, so use the relevant platform’s current Google Maps help instructions if you need step-by-step measurement or coordinate controls.
