A Google password change does not, by itself, establish why a YouTube stream key stopped working. First copy the current key from YouTube Studio into your encoder. If that fails—or you want to invalidate the old key—reset the key in Live Control Room and replace the saved value in the encoder. You must be a channel owner or manager to reset it.
What the stream key does—and whether your password change caused this
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key lets your encoder send its feed to YouTube, which uses the key to accept it. YouTube’s help material explains how to retrieve and reset a key, but does not say that changing a Google Account password automatically invalidates a YouTube stream key. The timing may be related, but it does not prove cause.
The fix depends on how your streaming software connects: a key-based encoder needs the current key copied into its settings; software that signs in directly to YouTube instead needs support from its provider.
Replace the key in a key-based encoder
- Check the account and channel. Sign in to the Google Account for the YouTube channel you intend to stream from. If you manage multiple channels, make sure Studio is showing the right one.
- Open the stream settings. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then select Stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s setup guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the current stream key. In Live Control Room, locate the stream key and copy it. In your encoder, paste it into the stream-key field, replacing the saved value. Treat the key as sensitive: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Check the server separately. YouTube’s encoder setup uses separate fields for the stream URL (server) and stream key. Confirm that the encoder is using the intended YouTube stream URL as well as the current key; do not paste the key into the server field.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. If YouTube still does not receive the feed, reset the key using the steps below and update the encoder with the newly generated value.

Reset the key if the current one fails or may be exposed
- In YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live > Stream to open the stream settings in Live Control Room.
- Find the hidden stream key and select Reset next to it. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission.
- Copy the newly generated key into the encoder’s stream-key field, replacing the old key, then try the stream again.
Resetting changes which key the encoder must use, so updating YouTube alone is not enough: the encoder’s saved key must also be replaced. If you do not have the owner or manager role, ask someone who does to reset it.
If your software signs in to YouTube instead of using a key
Some streaming applications connect through YouTube account sign-in rather than a manually entered stream key. If that describes your setup, changing a key in Studio will not repair the application’s direct sign-in flow. YouTube advises contacting the software provider; the application may need an update to work with YouTube Live. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

If a correct key still will not start the stream
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Update the encoder. YouTube recommends using the latest version of the streaming application. Check its own update instructions if the version is unclear.
- Inspect encoder health and the outbound connection. Confirm the encoder is sending and check its connection or stream-health indicators. A correct key cannot compensate for an encoder that is not sending a feed or an internet connection that cannot send it reliably. - Recheck the key and server fields. A stale key, a key pasted into the wrong field, or an unintended stream URL can prevent YouTube from receiving the feed. Copy the current key again and compare both encoder fields with the settings for the intended stream.
