For one viewer, a 24/7 stream uses about 10.8 GB per day for every 1 Mbps of average video bitrate, or about 324 GB in a 30-day month per 1 Mbps. A stream averaging 2 Mbps would use roughly 21.6 GB per day and 648 GB per month. These are decimal-GB estimates before delivery overhead and normal variation; the actual total depends on the stream’s average bitrate, not simply on it being children’s content.

Estimate data use from the stream’s bitrate

There is no universal bitrate for a children’s video stream. Animation, camera footage, motion, resolution, encoder settings, and the streaming service’s delivery can all affect the data rate. If you know the average bitrate for the rendition a viewer watches, use these calculations:

  • GB per hour: average bitrate in Mbps × 0.45
  • GB per 24-hour day: average bitrate in Mbps × 10.8
  • GB per 30-day month: average bitrate in Mbps × 324

The figures assume that the stated average bitrate continues without interruption. They use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB). Real totals can differ because of variable bitrate, audio, delivery overhead, interruptions, and player behavior. AWS’s implementation guide gives further bitrate-to-data conversion guidance: Bitrate and storage.

Average bitrate Approx. per hour Approx. per day, 24/7 Approx. 30-day month
446 Kbps (0.446 Mbps) 0.20 GB 4.82 GB 144.5 GB
1 Mbps 0.45 GB 10.8 GB 324 GB
2 Mbps 0.90 GB 21.6 GB 648 GB
5 Mbps 2.25 GB 54 GB 1,620 GB (1.62 TB)

Why resolution alone does not give an exact answer

Quality labels such as 720p or 1080p do not specify a fixed data rate. Services, devices, settings, and the content itself can produce different usage at a similar resolution. For example, Netflix’s recommendations of 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K are connection-speed recommendations, not direct estimates of monthly data use. See Netflix’s internet connection speed recommendations.

Published service estimates offer illustrations, not a universal rate for children’s videos:

Service and context Published estimate Important qualification
Disney+, TV-connected devices About 0.7 GB/hour for SD; 2 GB/hour for 1080p; 7.7 GB/hour for 4K UHD & HDR Disney+ also reports mobile and browser examples; usage depends on device and setting. See Disney+ data usage.
Fubo, live programming 1.21 GB/hour at 480p; 1.67 GB/hour at 720p; 2.03 GB/hour at 1080p; 7.11 GB/hour at 4K Fubo calls these minimum estimates. Actual use varies with connection, device, channel or program, and whether viewing is live, on-demand, or DVR. See Fubo’s data-use estimates.

As an illustration of how large continuous viewing can become, multiplying Fubo’s stated 720p live estimate by 24 hours gives about 40.08 GB per day, and by 30 days gives about 1,202.4 GB. At its stated 1080p estimate, the same arithmetic gives about 48.72 GB per day and 1,461.6 GB per 30 days. Those totals are arithmetic extrapolations from Fubo’s figures, not universal estimates for 720p or 1080p children’s streams.

Do not confuse bitrate, connection speed, and monthly data

  • Bitrate is the rate at which the stream delivers data, commonly expressed in Mbps.
  • Connection speed or bandwidth capacity describes how much data a network connection can carry at a time.
  • Data use is the volume accumulated over time, commonly expressed in GB or TB.

A speed recommendation such as 5 Mbps does not mean 5 GB per hour or a fixed monthly amount. To estimate monthly data, use the stream’s bitrate and viewing duration—or an appropriate service estimate in GB per hour.

One viewer’s use is not the broadcaster’s total

For one viewer, estimate the data received using that viewer’s rendition bitrate and time watched. For a broadcaster, total delivery depends on the audience: viewer count, average watch time, and the quality or bitrate each viewer receives all matter. Delivery implementation can also affect the broadcaster’s egress. Vimeo describes these inputs in its live-streaming bandwidth overview.

Do not multiply a one-viewer monthly estimate by 24 again: the daily and monthly figures above already assume continuous 24-hour playback.

If you are broadcasting the stream, allow upload headroom

A viewer’s data use and a broadcaster’s required upload capacity answer different questions. Livestream Producer recommends an available upload speed at least twice the total stream bitrate to allow for normal fluctuations. This is the provider’s guidance for a stable broadcast connection; it does not mean viewers consume twice the stream’s data. The same provider lists a 446 Kbps “Normal” stereo preset total and a 2,632 Kbps “High+Medium+Mobile” stereo preset total. Those are examples from its product, not recommended or measured bitrates for children’s video. See Livestream’s connection and bitrate guidance.

Find the number for your particular stream

  1. Identify the viewer’s quality or rendition. Adaptive players may deliver different qualities to different devices or connections.
  2. Look for its average bitrate or measured data per hour. Prefer figures for the actual service, device, and playback mode. A peak bitrate is not necessarily the average over a full day.
  3. Calculate the duration. Multiply average Mbps by 10.8 for an estimated 24-hour total, or by 324 for a 30-day month. If you have a measured GB/hour figure instead, multiply by 24 or 720.
  4. For a broadcaster’s total, account for viewers and watch time. Estimate delivery per viewer or rendition, then include the audience and the way the service distributes the stream.

If the service does not publish a bitrate or data estimate, there is no defensible exact total from resolution or the label “children’s video” alone. Use account or player usage data if available, or make a measured estimate for the actual setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you are publishing a pre-recorded video as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
