To create a 24/7 YouTube rain-and-lofi radio stream, clear the rights to every track and sound, combine your audio with a still or looping visual, then send the feed to YouTube through an encoder such as OBS or FFmpeg. Keep the encoder and its internet connection available, test the stream before launch, and monitor it with a recovery plan: no setup guarantees uninterrupted uptime.
1. Check that your YouTube channel can stream
Before preparing a long mix, open YouTube Studio and confirm that live streaming is enabled. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires channel verification, no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and an operator who is at least 16. YouTube says first-time activation can take time, so check Studio rather than assuming you can launch immediately. Live content must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. For a radio-style presentation, the encoder route is generally the useful choice: it lets you combine a music source, a rain bed, and a visual scene before sending them to YouTube. Create the broadcast in Live Control Room and use the stream key shown there. Treat that key like a password; do not put it in public notes, screenshots, or chat.

2. Clear rights for every sound and visual
Make a rights inventory before building the playlist. Include each lofi track, rain recording, sample, loop, and visual. A file you bought, a track labelled “no copyright,” or a video already on YouTube is not proof that you have permission to use it in a livestream. For commissioned or externally licensed material, keep written terms that cover livestream use and retain the permission records.

Using YouTube Audio Library tracks
YouTube states: “Music and sound effects from the YouTube Audio Library are copyright-safe.” That statement applies to tracks in YouTube’s own Audio Library, not unrelated libraries or channels. Check each track’s license details. If a Creative Commons track requires attribution, include the supplied attribution in the video description; some standard Audio Library tracks do not require it. Rights clearance and monetization are separate questions. Permission to use a track does not guarantee that a channel or stream will qualify for monetization, and a long loop does not make otherwise restricted material safe to use.
3. Build a rain-and-lofi radio package
Prepare the audio
- Use a playlist of tracks and rain ambience that you own or are explicitly allowed to livestream.
- Balance perceived loudness across tracks so transitions do not jump abruptly. Listen through the complete playlist, including its end-to-start transition, before going live.
- Check that the rain bed does not mask the music or become distracting. If you mix sources, monitor the combined output rather than judging each source alone.
Choose a visual identity
A YouTube live stream still needs a video signal, even if the program is an audio-first radio station. Pair the audio with an original still image or a subtle animation. Keep it legible at small viewing sizes and make sure you have rights to all artwork and footage. A defined mood—such as a rainy night study room—can help guide the sound, image, title, and chat tone. These are creative choices, not YouTube requirements or a promise of audience growth.

For a local setup, create a scene in OBS with your visual and audio sources, select YouTube as the service, enter the stream key from Live Control Room, and start with a test feed. Keep the computer awake, prevent unwanted restarts or sleep, and make sure your connection has enough upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
For a server setup, a guide from RadioTech Studio describes using FFmpeg on a Linux server to combine a radio audio source with a still or video loop, then running the process in the background with restart behavior. This approach is for operators comfortable managing server processes and logs; it is not a YouTube guarantee or an endorsement of a particular host. See RadioTech Studio’s 24/7 radio workflow.
Google’s Live Streaming API documentation also describes maintaining an ongoing live feed and creating separate broadcasts from the same stream when needed. 5. Set YouTube encoder parameters
Choose settings that your encoder and sustained upload connection can handle. YouTube recommends testing the connection and monitoring stream health. Its current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. For a predictable starting point, H.264 with constant bitrate encoding is widely usable. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds; for stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current settings guidance.

Those figures are YouTube’s encoder bitrate guidance, not a recommended internet plan or a guarantee that a particular connection will sustain a stream. Leave upload headroom for other network use and test at the chosen resolution with comparable audio and visual movement.
Use RTMPS and protect the key
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over an SSL connection. Use the ingest endpoint and stream key displayed in Studio, rather than copying connection details from an old setup. Google describes RTMPS as a good option for most ordinary user content in its RTMPS delivery guide. If you think a key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

6. Test before announcing the station
- Check the source mix. Start the playlist and rain bed, then listen for silence, clipping, uneven transitions, or an abrupt loop restart.
- Send a test feed. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Include audio and visual movement comparable to the planned broadcast; YouTube specifically recommends representative testing.
- Inspect the viewer experience. Watch from another device and confirm the correct image, audio balance, stream destination, and broadcast status.
- Check Live Control Room. Confirm the encoder is sending data and review YouTube’s stream-health indicators before sharing the link.
- Keep a recovery route ready. Know how to restart the encoder and reconnect to the correct broadcast. If an outage requires a new broadcast, communicate the new link to viewers.
7. Monitor the stream and recover from interruptions
A continuous stream can stop because of a network interruption, a crashed encoder, a sleeping or rebooting computer, a bad media input, or a YouTube-side disconnect. Watch both the encoder or server process and the stream in Live Control Room. Configure process restart and alerts if your workflow supports them, and keep a way to reach the machine or service remotely. Automatic restart can reduce downtime, but it cannot establish that the stream will never go offline.
Common problems and fixes
- Live streaming is not available: check channel verification, restrictions in the preceding 90 days, age eligibility, and the activation status in YouTube Studio.
- YouTube receives no signal: verify the selected destination, ingest endpoint, stream key, encoder output state, and internet connection. Replace an exposed or suspect key in Studio.
- The stream has video but no sound: confirm that the correct audio source is enabled in the scene or FFmpeg input, that it is not muted, and that the encoder is sending an audio codec YouTube accepts.
- Audio stutters or video buffers: check stream health and sustained upload capacity; lower resolution or bitrate to a level the connection can reliably sustain, then repeat the test.
- The stream stops after an unattended period: check for computer sleep, scheduled restarts, server-process failure, connection loss, and expired or changed credentials. Add monitoring and restart behavior, then verify the broadcast after recovery.
- A rights claim appears: review the claim against your track-level permissions and the specific platform license. Remove or replace material you cannot document permission to use; “no copyright” labelling alone is not sufficient evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run multiple live streams from one YouTube channel?
YouTube’s current help page lists up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key; most single-station setups will not approach those limits.
Can a still image be used for an audio-focused live stream?
Yes. The stream still needs a video signal, and that signal can be a still or a looped visual paired with the audio.
