Pacific Science Center retired its long-running animatronic dinosaur exhibit after more than 40 years because aging, custom-built machines had become difficult and expensive to maintain safely and reliably. The museum says it documented the exhibit’s pieces, considered preservation options and kept two dinosaurs in its Main Entry. A December 2025 fundraiser offered pieces for public adoption, but PacSci has not documented where every dinosaur or component ultimately went.
Why did Pacific Science Center retire the dinosaur exhibit?
PacSci says the animatronics needed significant maintenance to keep operating safely and reliably. Many components were custom-built in the 1980s and 1990s, making repairs increasingly complex and costly. The original manufacturer had gone out of business, limiting the museum’s ability to obtain support for preserving the machines to its desired standard.
The museum describes the retirement as a considered decision: staff documented the pieces and evaluated preservation options. PacSci has not cited a safety incident, a single breakdown or a budget crisis as the reason.

PacSci’s December 8, 2025 retrospective says two dinosaurs remain in the museum’s Main Entry. The statement does not identify them here as the complete exhibit, nor does it say that the former dinosaur gallery remains open.

On December 9, 2025, PacSci announced a public adoption fundraiser for pieces of the retired animatronic exhibit. The campaign ran from December 10 through December 18, 2025, ending at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time. Its announcement said pieces could be partial, incomplete or worn; adoptions were as-is, shipping was unavailable, and adopters were responsible for transport during the designated pickup window. Those campaign dates have passed, and the announcement does not report the outcome or final destination of every piece.
PacSci’s current exhibits listing does not include the former dinosaur exhibit. The two dinosaurs in the Main Entry are a separate detail and do not establish that the old gallery is still available to visit.

How did the exhibit become a Seattle institution?
PacSci introduced Dinosaurs: A Journey Through Time in 1984 as the main attraction of its winter-break Science Circus. The museum says nearly 47,000 people visited by the end of that program. The attraction returned in 1985, when PacSci reports more than 66,000 visitors.
In 1987, the dinosaurs began a Washington State tour in Spokane; PacSci reports 105,000 visitors across the tour. By 1991, the dinosaurs had a permanent 4,500-square-foot gallery. Later milestones included a 1994 exhibition, Dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, featuring film props and artifacts, which PacSci says drew 341,000 visitors, and the 2002 arrival of Sue, a cast of the Field Museum’s large, relatively complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton.

PacSci also recalls the animatronics’ movement and sounds, visitors’ Dino Passports, educational activities and related programming. Among those connections was artist Jim Gary’s 1986 Twentieth Century Dinosaurs sculptures made from car parts. The museum listed the dinosaur exhibit among its experiences in a July 2022 reopening announcement; that historical listing is not evidence that the gallery is open now.
