As of Oct. 3, 2026: Seth Trimble was reported ineligible to play for Louisville in 2026–27 after the Kentucky Court of Appeals dissolved a temporary injunction in Wells v. NCAA on Oct. 2. The underlying lawsuit was still ongoing in contemporary reports, so this was not a final ruling on the broader eligibility dispute.
What changed in the eligibility case?
The Oct. 2 action by a three-judge Kentucky Court of Appeals panel dissolved the temporary injunction that had protected Trimble and other athletes while their case proceeded. Reports said the 38 plaintiffs, including Trimble, were again ineligible for the 2026–27 season.
The distinction is procedural but important: the appeals court removed temporary relief; the available reports do not establish that it finally resolved the broader dispute over NCAA eligibility rules. The status described here is the one reported following Friday’s ruling, Oct. 2, 2026.

The Courier Journal quoted the judges’ explanation: “There was no loss of an opportunity for them because nothing changed, and the new rule did not, as the circuit court surmised, ‘bar’ them from doing anything they previously had a right to do.” It also quoted the judges saying that “Permitting the high school Class of 2022 to play a fifth season — the very relief the respondents were requesting in their joint motion for a ‘temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction’ — would disrupt the status quo.” These are the judges’ words as quoted by the newspaper; the appellate opinion itself is not linked in the sources cited here. What this means for Trimble and Louisville
Based on the Oct. 2 reporting, Trimble could not play for Louisville under the temporary protection that had been in place. The reports do not establish that a later order has restored his eligibility or predict whether one will be issued. His status could change if there is a subsequent court action, so readers should treat this as a dated account rather than a permanent resolution.
This is the Kentucky state-court case Wells v. NCAA. It should not be conflated with separate federal litigation mentioned in earlier coverage.

Does NCAA reinstatement policy settle his case?
No. The NCAA’s general student-athlete reinstatement guidance explains procedures and certain self-applied waiver categories, but it does not determine Trimble’s case-specific status or promise an automatic waiver. NCAA student-athlete reinstatement guidance.
