To create a WordPress featured image with Nano Banana 2, define what the image should communicate, generate and review a suitable draft, then upload it through the post’s Featured image control and preview how your theme crops it. Nano Banana 2 is Google’s name for Gemini 3.1 Flash Image; Google documents image generation, editing, iteration, and text rendering. The steps below take you from prompt to published image, with checks for accuracy, accessibility, and theme-specific display.
1. Decide what the featured image needs to do
Start with the article’s main subject and the idea a reader should recognize from the image. Choose whether you need a literal editorial illustration, a conceptual scene, a product or place image, or a branded visual. Keep the important subject near the center and leave space around the edges: WordPress themes may show the same featured image in different sizes and crops, including on a post page and a blog index. Before prompting, check where your site actually displays featured images. Note the proportions of the article header and any archive or card layout. This gives you a more useful target than assuming there is one standard WordPress image size.
2. Write a specific Nano Banana 2 prompt
Google’s prompting guidance recommends describing a scene with its subject, action, setting, composition, and style. Use this as a starting point and replace the bracketed details:
Create a [style] editorial image for a WordPress article about [topic]. Show [main subject] [action] in [context]. Compose it as a wide landscape image, with the key subject near the center and uncluttered space around the edges. Use [lighting] and a [color palette]. Do not include text, logos, or invented interface details unless the article specifically requires them.
The request to omit text or logos is a prompt instruction, not a guarantee. Google describes text rendering as a model capability, but any text in an output still needs checking for spelling and factual accuracy.

3. Generate, inspect, and revise the image
You can use the image-generation tools in Gemini Apps or a documented developer route. In Gemini Apps, Google’s help instructions describe choosing Images, entering a prompt or template, reviewing the result, and editing a generated or uploaded image. The exact controls can vary as the service changes; consult Google’s current Gemini Apps image-generation instructions.
Review the image against the article, not just for visual appeal. Check:
- Subject match: Does it accurately represent the article, rather than only matching its mood?
- Crop safety: Would the important subject remain visible in a narrower card or archive crop?
- Factual detail: Are any signs, labels, maps, products, or interface elements depicted correctly?
- Artifacts: Look for distorted hands, text, shadows, objects, or background details.
- Rights and privacy: Make sure any reference photo or recognizable person is appropriate for your intended use.
If something is wrong, give a focused follow-up instruction—for example, ask to correct one object or move the subject inward—then inspect the new version. Treat each result as a draft requiring review.

4. Choose a ratio and resolution for your site
WordPress does not establish one featured-image dimension that fits every theme. Themes determine how featured images are used, and site settings can configure image sizes. The Featured Image block also offers display controls subject to theme support. Check the block documentation and your WordPress Media settings, then match the source image’s proportions to the places your site uses it.
Google documents multiple aspect ratios and resolutions for its model, but access route and account affect what is available. Google’s Gemini Apps help page currently says downloads are 1K for users without an AI plan and 2K for users with a Google AI plan. Those figures describe Gemini Apps, not every API or third-party route. Check the current limits for the method and account you plan to use; the Gemini API image-generation documentation covers the developer route and model options.
Do not assume the largest available output is automatically best for your site. WordPress treats image dimensions, file size, and resizing as separate considerations; check its image size and quality guidance. Preview the image in the actual post and archive layouts to confirm that the crop remains meaningful.

5. Upload and set the featured image in WordPress
- Open the post in the WordPress editor and open the post settings sidebar.
- Find the Featured image control. Choose an existing item from the Media Library or upload the image.
- Select Set featured image to assign it to the post. WordPress documents these controls in its Page/Post Settings sidebar guide.
- Preview the post and the places your theme displays the image, such as the blog index or a query loop. The Featured Image block can link the image to the post and provides display controls, but available behavior depends on theme support.
You can also use the image block’s menu action to set a selected image as the featured image, as described in the sidebar documentation.

In the Media Library or image details, add a useful title if it will help you manage the asset. Write alt text that conveys the image’s meaningful information in the context of the article. WordPress identifies alt text as accessibility information. The Image block’s own alternative text can differ from the Media Library default, so check the text applied to the image where it appears. Keep alt text descriptive and relevant rather than filling it with search terms or listing decorative details that add no information. Before publishing, make sure the image loads, the crop still communicates the subject, any included text is legible, and the asset suits the page’s intended use.

Which Nano Banana 2 access route should you use?
For an individual blogger, the practical distinction is whether you want a guided image interface or a developer workflow. Gemini Apps documents guided generation and editing; Google’s API documentation is aimed at developers using model identifiers and API calls. Account-specific output limits can differ, so verify them in the chosen route rather than assuming a resolution or capability applies everywhere.
