Meta’s simplest strength is that its advertising business is growing on two fronts: it is showing more ads and earning more per ad. In the second quarter of 2026, revenue rose 28% year over year, while ad impressions increased 14% and average price per ad rose 12%. That is strong operating momentum—not proof that Meta shares outperformed the market, and not evidence that AI alone caused the gains.
Meta’s ad business is growing through volume and pricing
Meta reported $60.80 billion in revenue for Q2 2026, up 28% year over year. Within its Family of Apps, ad impressions increased 14% and average price per ad increased 12%. Together, those measures show the two basic ways advertising revenue can expand: delivering more ads and getting a higher average price for them. Meta’s Q2 2026 results also reported an average of 3.60 billion daily active people across its Family of Apps in June, up 3% year over year.
The broader business mix makes the importance of advertising clear. In its 2025 Form 10-K, Meta reported $200.966 billion in total revenue, including $196.175 billion from advertising. For full-year 2025, ad impressions rose 12% and average price per ad rose 9%. The company attributed advertising growth to increases in both measures. Meta’s 2025 annual filing shows that this is a large, established engine—not a new line of business.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg framed AI as both an improvement to the existing business and a source of new products and opportunities. In the Q2 2026 release, he said: “AI is accelerating our core business today, powering our next generation of products, and opening the door to entirely new enterprise opportunities.”

That statement is management’s explanation of its strategy, not a quantified finding that AI by itself caused the quarter’s advertising growth. The reported impression and pricing gains demonstrate business performance; they do not isolate AI’s contribution from other factors. A careful reading is that Meta says AI is helping its core operation while the company invests in longer-term products and infrastructure.
Revenue rose, but quarterly profit fell
Higher sales did not translate into higher profit in Q2 2026. Meta reported net income of $15.848 billion, down 14% year over year, and diluted earnings per share of $6.18, down 13%. The Associated Press reported that legal expenses and severance costs weighed on the quarter. AP’s coverage of the results also noted that Meta shares dropped after the announcement, despite revenue growth, as investors reacted to lower profit and higher costs.

This distinction matters: a fast-growing top line can be encouraging, but it does not guarantee improving earnings or a rising share price. The cited market reaction is a snapshot around the earnings report, not a comparison of Meta’s longer-term returns with an index or other stocks.

Meta’s AI and infrastructure plans require substantial spending. In its Q1 2026 outlook, the company projected full-year capital expenditures of $125 billion to $145 billion, including principal payments on finance leases, and total expenses of $162 billion to $169 billion. These are forward-looking company estimates, not completed spending or guaranteed outcomes. Meta had previously projected capital expenditures of $115 billion to $135 billion, so the updated range was higher. The Q1 2026 outlook is the relevant dated guidance; it can change.

For context, Meta reported $72.22 billion in 2025 capital expenditures, including finance-lease principal payments, in its annual filing. The planned increase reflects the scale of the infrastructure commitment, but it also raises the stakes: returns from that investment need to support the business over time.
Risks beyond spending
Ad targeting and measurement depend on outside conditions
Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K warns that changes in regulation, mobile operating systems, browsers, and available data signals can hurt ad targeting, measurement, and advertising revenue. Those factors matter because advertiser demand and the value of Meta’s ad inventory depend in part on reaching and measuring audiences effectively.

Reality Labs is a separate drag on results
Meta’s Reality Labs segment reported $2.207 billion in revenue and an operating loss of $19.193 billion in 2025. That is a distinct investment burden from the advertising business: it should not be mistaken for evidence that the ad engine itself is unprofitable, but it is part of the company’s overall spending and earnings picture.

The business case behind renewed optimism is straightforward: Meta’s dominant advertising operation is growing in both ad delivery and average pricing, across a huge audience, while management argues AI is helping strengthen that core. The counterweight is that Q2 profit declined, legal and severance costs mattered, and the company is planning exceptionally large infrastructure outlays.

Those facts support a case for operating momentum, not a definitive claim about investment returns. The results and AP’s report establish a short-term market reaction, but they do not establish a share-price return period or benchmark comparison. Whether Meta has “won” for investors depends on the chosen dates and comparison; the operating figures alone cannot settle that question.
