Use /plugin in Claude Code to discover and install plugins. If the plugin you want is in another catalog, add its marketplace first. To publish your own, package the plugin with a required manifest and any optional commands, agents, skills, or MCP configuration, then distribute it through a marketplace. Treat third-party plugins as software you must review and trust.

How do I install Claude Code plugins?

Anthropic describes plugins as a public beta feature for Claude Code users, available in terminal and VS Code. The /plugin command is the starting point for browsing and installing them. The official directory’s install form is /plugin install {plugin-name}@claude-plugins-official.

  1. Open the plugin menu. In Claude Code, enter /plugin. To browse Anthropic’s official catalog, choose Discover.
  2. Choose a plugin. Read its description and check what task it supports, what files or integrations it includes, and where it comes from.
  3. Install it. Select the plugin in the menu, or use the documented command format: /plugin install {plugin-name}@claude-plugins-official. Substitute the plugin’s name for {plugin-name}.

Anthropic’s marketplace currently includes examples for code review, security guidance, documentation lookup, browser testing, language intelligence, frontend design, and service integrations. The catalog changes over time; use its live listings to see what is currently available: Anthropic’s Claude Marketplace plugins.

Review a plugin before installing it

Anthropic’s official directory warns: “Make sure you trust a plugin before installing, updating, or using it.” A plugin can include MCP servers, files, and other software, and Anthropic says it cannot control or verify what third parties put in their plugins. Check the source repository, included components, external services, and requested access before proceeding. Apply the same review when updating a plugin, not just at first install.

How do I add a plugin marketplace?

A plugin is a package; a marketplace is a catalog of packages. Anthropic says a marketplace can be hosted in a Git repository, a GitHub repository, or at a URL, provided it supplies the expected .claude-plugin/marketplace.json file.

  1. Verify the marketplace source. Confirm that you trust the person or organization maintaining it and can inspect its repository or published contents.
  2. Add it in Claude Code. Enter /plugin marketplace add user-or-org/repo-name, replacing the example with the marketplace repository’s owner and name.
  3. Browse and install. Return to the plugin menu, browse the newly added catalog, inspect a plugin’s details and source, and install it only if its contents and integrations are acceptable.

For marketplace JSON requirements and distribution details, follow the official Claude Code plugins directory documentation.

How do I create my own Claude Code plugin?

Anthropic’s directory documents a plugin as a folder with a required metadata manifest and optional components. The basic documented layout is:

  • .claude-plugin/plugin.json — required plugin metadata manifest.
  • .mcp.json — optional MCP server configuration.
  • commands/ — optional slash commands.
  • agents/ — optional agent definitions.
  • skills/ — optional skill definitions.
  • README.md — documentation for users and maintainers.

Build only the components your plugin needs. For example, a plugin that supplies slash commands can use the commands directory without adding an MCP server configuration. If it connects to an external service through MCP, explain that dependency and its permissions clearly so people can assess the trust implications before installation.

Keep the plugin name stable

The official directory says a published plugin’s immutable name should not be changed casually: renaming it can break existing installs. Use a display label when you want to change how the plugin appears in the UI. If a rename is unavoidable, define a migration for the old name.

Publish through a marketplace

Anthropic says plugin authors can host plugins and marketplaces themselves. Make the plugin available through a Git repository, GitHub repository, or URL-backed marketplace that includes the expected .claude-plugin/marketplace.json; users can then add that marketplace in Claude Code and browse its catalog. Before publishing, document what the plugin does, its dependencies, and any external integrations.

How do I manage plugins in my own workflow?

Anthropic presents plugins as components users can toggle as needed. Disabling plugins can reduce system-prompt context and complexity. Use the plugin menu to manage what is active, and consult the current Claude Code interface for the available controls; the documentation cited here does not establish a specific disable command.

How should a team manage Claude Code plugins?

For Claude Enterprise organizations, Anthropic documents a separate beta Plugins API for centralized administration. Its capabilities include inventory, plugin and version uploads, choosing which version members receive, installation settings, marketplace validation, and reviewing plugin files. The API distinguishes read:plugins and write:plugins access; versions can be pinned or rolled back.

API access requires scoped Admin API credentials and the beta header. Anthropic says the API is unavailable to Claude Platform/Console organizations and to organizations with HIPAA readiness enabled. Check the current Plugins API documentation for the required request details and eligibility before planning a rollout.

How should I compare plugins for the same job?

Marketplace categories and descriptions help identify a plugin’s purpose, but they are not an official quality or security rating. Compare candidates on the practical factors below before installing:

  • Source: Is it from Anthropic or a third party, and can you inspect who maintains it?
  • Task coverage: Does it address the coding, review, testing, documentation, or other workflow you need?
  • Integrations and permissions: Does it rely on external services or MCP servers, and are their access requirements acceptable?
  • Environment: Does it fit the Claude Code environment in which you work?
  • Maintenance: Is there a clear source and update path you can review?

These are user-side comparison criteria, not Anthropic’s formal rating rubric. Plugin availability and descriptions can change; check the current marketplace and the plugin’s own source before relying on a listing.
