Caterpillar plans to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina to expand manufacturing capacity for its Cat Compact business, including a new facility in Sanford to make compact track loaders and telehandlers. The September 30, 2026 announcement describes an intended investment, not money already spent; it does not give a firm job count or construction and completion dates.
What Caterpillar plans to build
The company says the new Sanford facility will increase production capacity for compact track loaders and telehandlers. Caterpillar identifies construction, landscaping, agriculture, and material handling as uses for these machines.
The announcement places the project within its Cat Compact strategy, which Caterpillar says is intended to make the equipment experience more streamlined and convenient for small contractors and growing businesses. Construction Industries Group President Rod Shurman said, “As demand for compact equipment continues to increase, we’re investing to better serve this growing segment of customers.”

Caterpillar describes the planned site as a modern, technology-enabled manufacturing environment. It expects the facility to incorporate advanced manufacturing technologies, automation, digital production systems, and integrated logistics. Those are planned features; the announcement does not report an operating plant or measured outcomes for safety, quality, or production.

The company says it selected North Carolina because of its longstanding presence in the state, the local workforce, and the opportunity to build on existing manufacturing expertise and operations in Sanford. That is Caterpillar’s explanation for the selection, not a comparative assessment of other potential sites.
Jobs, skills and state response
Caterpillar says the project is expected to create opportunities for advanced manufacturing careers and support employee skill development in automation, robotics, digital manufacturing, and advanced production systems. It did not disclose how many jobs the project would create.

What has not been disclosed
The September 30, 2026 announcements do not provide a firm construction schedule, completion date, facility size, job total, or state incentive amount. Readers should therefore treat those details as unannounced rather than infer them from the investment figure.

How to interpret the $1 billion figure
Caterpillar described approximately $1 billion as its intended investment in North Carolina. The figure is not a statement that the entire amount has already been spent, nor does it specify how the investment is divided among construction, equipment, technology, or other costs.
The company’s release also notes that Caterpillar reported 2025 sales and revenues of $67.6 billion. That is company-wide context, not the Sanford project’s budget or a forecast of its local economic impact.
