Thunderbird can work with a Gmail account, but its folders, filters, backups, attachments and encryption offer a different desktop workflow. Mozilla’s documentation supports nine useful capabilities—not a claim that Thunderbird is better for everyone, or that one author personally switched because of them. Here is what each feature does, and where its limits matter.
1. Gmail synchronization that reflects labels as folders
Thunderbird synchronizes messages with web-based Gmail, and Gmail labels appear as folders in Thunderbird. The underlying models are not identical: Gmail can show one message under multiple labels, while copying that message into another Thunderbird folder can create multiple copies in the client. Moving or deleting one of those copies may remove labels from the Gmail message.
If you rely on Gmail labels to organize a message in several places, understand this behavior before recreating that workflow in Thunderbird. Mozilla Support’s Gmail setup guide explains the synchronization and label behavior.
2. Control which Gmail folders Thunderbird syncs
You can manage folder subscriptions and synchronization settings. One choice is whether to subscribe to Gmail’s All Mail folder. Mozilla advises considering unsubscribing because All Mail can create duplicate views and use space. The trade-off is offline access: unsubscribing can remove local access to messages that are not downloaded through another active folder.

Choose based on how you use Gmail and whether offline access matters; removing All Mail is not a universally correct cleanup step. See Mozilla’s Gmail instructions for the relevant settings.
3. Filters that automate message actions
Thunderbird filters can automatically move, delete or forward messages. Rules belong to individual accounts, and both their scope and order affect the result. New-mail filters normally apply to the Inbox; archiving and after-send filters have separate scopes. A move action can also change what a later rule can act on.
Build rules around the account and folder behavior you want, then check their order rather than assuming every rule runs on every message. Mozilla’s filter guide describes the available actions and scope.

4. A Quick Filter Bar for fast triage
The Quick Filter Bar narrows the message list by criteria such as unread, starred, contact and tagged status. It can remain active as you switch folders, which helps when you want to scan matching messages across locations.

5. Profile export and import for backup and transfer
Thunderbird stores personal information in a profile, and Mozilla documents ways to export a profile backup and import settings and data from other sources. That gives you a supported path for preserving or transferring Thunderbird information.

Do not assume that a profile export transfers every provider’s server-side data, or that data from every other application imports identically. The available routes are described in Mozilla’s import and export help.
6. Filelink for large attachments
When a mail server may reject a large attachment, Thunderbird’s Filelink feature can use a web-based storage service to share it instead. This changes the delivery approach from attaching the file directly to sending it through a storage service.

7. End-to-end encryption—with setup and recipient requirements
Thunderbird supports end-to-end encryption, but it is not automatically applied to every message. You need to prepare keys or certificates in account settings, and recipients must meet the requirements for the selected encryption method. If a recipient is not prepared, encryption may not be available for that message.

Mozilla describes add-ons as extensions or additions that can add functionality or change Thunderbird’s appearance. That makes the client adaptable to different workflows, but a general add-on capability is not a guarantee that a particular extension is currently available, maintained or compatible with your version.

Check an extension’s current status and compatibility before relying on it. Mozilla’s Thunderbird help index covers settings and related topics.
9. Calendar guidance alongside email
Mozilla’s Thunderbird help index includes guidance for using Google Calendar with Thunderbird, making calendar use a potential part of a desktop workflow. The index alone does not establish how synchronization works, which features are supported or what the limitations are.
Confirm the specific calendar setup and behavior you need in the Mozilla help index before depending on it.
Is Thunderbird a good fit if you use Gmail?
These features make Thunderbird worth considering if you prefer a desktop client with message-list triage, automatic rules, profile backups and optional customization. The most important adjustment is Gmail’s label-to-folder behavior: it can affect how messages appear and what happens when you move or delete a copy. Encryption, Filelink and calendar use also involve setup or service-specific limits.

If Gmail’s web interface and label behavior suit you, Thunderbird’s capabilities alone do not prove a reason to switch. If you want a desktop workflow, test it with your actual account and the features you intend to use before making it your primary client.
