An 18-year-old provisional driver was charged with nine offences after a car struck people gathered to cheer on the Newcastle Knights in Wallsend, 7NEWS reported on October 3, 2026. Police allege he lost control of a convertible BMW after driving erratically. The charges are allegations, not findings of guilt.
What happened in Wallsend
The crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday at a roundabout on Newcastle Link Road in Wallsend, where hundreds of supporters had gathered for the Knights’ send-off before the NRL grand final. According to 7NEWS, police allege the driver was travelling erratically, lost control of the convertible BMW and struck the crowd.
The report says bystanders helped people before emergency services arrived. NSW Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell praised their assistance, saying, “It made our job … A lot easier as a result,” as quoted by 7NEWS. The road closure led the club to change its planned route; the report says hundreds consequently missed the chance to show their support.

7NEWS reported that the driver was charged on Saturday night with nine offences in three categories:
