O’Hare Flyer is a proposed privately financed express train between downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport—not an approved or operating service. Its founders say they are pursuing agreements with three freight railroads and raising private capital. The project’s current targets call for a 15-minute trip to Terminal 2, trains every 15 minutes, construction as soon as 2028 and service within five years; those are proposals, not confirmed outcomes.
What O’Hare Flyer proposes
The project announced on August 25, 2026, would connect a downtown station near the Old Post Office with O’Hare Terminal 2. O’Hare Flyer says battery-electric trains would run on dedicated track using existing freight railroad rights-of-way, with charging at the downtown and airport stations. The project describes trains with luggage racks and characterizes the ride as clean, quiet and comfortable; those are its design and marketing descriptions, not independently measured performance.
The project’s stated service target is a 15-minute downtown-to-Terminal 2 trip, with departures every 15 minutes. These figures come from the project announcement and describe a proposed service, not observed travel times or a published operating schedule. Dave Lundy, founder and CEO, said in the announcement: “O’Hare Flyer will connect our world class downtown with our world class airport in fifteen minutes.” O’Hare Flyer press release

What the founders say must happen next
Secure agreements for the railroad rights-of-way
The proposed route depends on access to rights-of-way owned by CSX, Canadian National and Union Pacific. O’Hare Flyer says it has agreed on terms with CSX, memorialized in a Letter of Intent, and is working toward definitive agreements with all three carriers. Its FAQ also says definitive agreements are still being finalized. An LOI with CSX is not a completed agreement with all three railroads, and the reviewed project materials do not establish that the necessary access is secured.

The project release quotes Andy Daly, CSX Senior Director of Passenger Operations, saying: “CSX is pleased to work with the O’Hare Flyer team to support a safe and reliable transportation option for Chicago travelers.” That statement describes CSX’s cooperation with the team; it does not by itself establish that final route agreements or approvals are complete. Raise private financing and obtain approvals
O’Hare Flyer says it is pursuing equity and debt and is not seeking government subsidies. WBEZ Chicago reported the proposed project cost as $2.25 billion in 2026. That is a reported project estimate, not a final or independently audited cost, and the reviewed sources do not establish that the funding has been secured. WBEZ Chicago’s report

The FAQ says the project is seeking approvals and welcomes public support, but it does not provide a complete list of required approvals or a record showing they have been obtained. Its financing approach and negotiations are steps toward a possible project, not proof that construction can proceed.
When could construction and service begin?
The project FAQ says construction could begin as soon as 2028 and commercial service could begin within five years. These are conditional targets stated by O’Hare Flyer, not confirmed start or opening dates. The timing depends on matters the reviewed sources do not show as complete, including final railroad agreements, financing and approvals. O’Hare Flyer FAQ

The advertised 15-minute figure covers the proposed train journey between downtown and Terminal 2. It is not a door-to-door travel estimate: the materials do not establish the time needed to reach either station, wait for a train, transfer, or proceed through the airport. Nor do they provide a final fare, a complete accessibility or baggage-handling specification, or verified service performance.

On price, the FAQ says a ride would cost significantly less than a rideshare or taxi but gives no dollar fare. That comparison is the project’s claim, not a published fare or independently established comparison. For now, travelers cannot use the 15-minute target or the fare description to plan an actual trip: O’Hare Flyer is a proposal, not a service available for booking.
