Syngenta has begun formal consultation on a proposal to cease operations at its Grangemouth site, putting 377 jobs at risk, according to October 2026 coverage. That is a proposed closure, not a confirmed shutdown or 377 completed redundancies. Reports also say Syngenta received more than £2 million from Scottish Enterprise a little over a year earlier. The grant’s exact purpose and conditions have not been established, so it cannot yet be described as funding contractually intended to save these specific jobs.
What is happening at Syngenta’s Grangemouth site?
Syngenta, a chemical manufacturer, has opened formal consultation on a proposal to cease operations at its Grangemouth facility. The reported 377 jobs are therefore at risk while the proposal is considered; the figure is not a count of confirmed redundancies.
The distinction matters: consultation means the company is considering a course of action and engaging on it, not that the site has already closed. The October 2026 coverage establishes the proposal and the reported number of jobs at risk, but does not establish a final closure decision or its outcome.
What is known about the Scottish Enterprise funding?
Reports say Syngenta received more than £2 million from Scottish Enterprise a little over a year before the closure proposal emerged. The exact award date and sum, what the money funded, and any conditions attached to it have not been verified in the available information.

Without the award terms, the phrase “funding to protect Grangemouth jobs” should not be read as proof that the grant required Syngenta to retain these 377 jobs, or that it guaranteed the site would stay open. The award may have supported a project at the company, but its scope and any job commitments are not established. No confirmed statement from Syngenta or Scottish Enterprise about the grant terms or the proposal is available here.
Which Grangemouth funding and job figures refer to other operations?
Grangemouth’s industrial site includes separate businesses and projects. Public announcements about the refinery, ethylene production and proposed future industries do not change Syngenta’s consultation status. The figures below concern different recipients or purposes and should not be added together as jobs already secured or funding already spent on Syngenta.

| Company or initiative | Funding and funder | What the announcement says | Status and distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Syngenta’s Grangemouth operation | More than £2 million reportedly received from Scottish Enterprise, a little over a year before October 2026 coverage. | October 2026 coverage reports 377 jobs at risk. | Formal consultation on a proposed cessation of operations. The award’s exact terms and any job-retention commitment are unverified. |
| Petroineos oil refinery | No grant amount established here for the refinery decision. | In September 2024, the UK Government said Petroineos had confirmed it would stop oil refining at Grangemouth from the second quarter of 2025. | This is the refinery, not Syngenta’s chemical operation. The government cited global market pressures and competition from larger, newer and more efficient sites. |
| Project Willow | On 19 March 2025, the UK Government announced £200 million of support through the National Wealth Fund; the Scottish Government announced a £25 million Just Transition Fund. | A feasibility study set out nine potential industrial options, including plastics recycling and hydrogen production. | These are future opportunities and announced support, not evidence that the projects are operating or that the money has been spent on Syngenta. |
| MiAlgae | £1.5 million announced by the Scottish Government in 2025. | The government forecast up to 310 jobs over five years. | A forecast for a separate project, not a confirmed job count and not linked to Syngenta’s grant. |
| Celtic Renewables | £6.23 million announced by the Scottish Government in 2025. | The government forecast up to 149 roles by 2030. | A forecast for a separate project, not a confirmed job count and not linked to Syngenta’s grant. |
| INEOS ethylene plant | A £150 million joint UK Government–INEOS package announced on 17 December 2025. | The government said the agreement would protect 500 jobs. | This is the ethylene plant, distinct from both the oil refinery and Syngenta. It is not evidence that Syngenta’s proposal has been reversed. |
How did the earlier refinery decision shape the wider transition?
The refinery’s planned cessation and Syngenta’s proposal are separate developments. On 12 September 2024, the UK Government said Petroineos had reported losses of more than $775 million since 2011, despite investing more than $1.2 billion to maintain safe refinery operations. Those figures describe Petroineos’s refinery business; they are not figures for Syngenta.
In 2025, the Scottish Government’s Industrial Just Transition Plan described support for the refinery workforce and the area. It included up to £33 million for the plan and £2.8 million of a £5 million total commitment for an INEOS fuel-switching project. These commitments relate to the wider transition, not to the reported Scottish Enterprise award to Syngenta.

Project Willow’s nine options—including plastics recycling and hydrogen production—are possibilities identified for future industrial development. The UK and Scottish funding announcements support future investment and transition; they do not establish that a specific replacement project is running or that it will employ people affected by Syngenta’s proposal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should workers and local readers watch for next?
The central unanswered question is what Scottish Enterprise’s award to Syngenta actually required. The award record or a statement from the company or agency would need to clarify its date, exact amount, project scope, any employment commitments, and whether repayment or other conditions apply.
Rank #4
For the jobs, the key update is the outcome of Syngenta’s consultation and whether the company confirms, changes or withdraws its proposal. Until that is established, 377 is the reported number of jobs at risk—not a final redundancy total. Announcements about the refinery, Project Willow, other Scottish Government-backed projects or the INEOS ethylene plant should be tracked separately because they concern different operations and do not resolve Syngenta’s proposal.
