My path into data analytics began with a question: how could I use data to understand a problem and help someone make a better decision? The answer was not one course or one tool. It came through repeated practice, projects, feedback, and learning to explain what the numbers meant. Individual career stories show several ways into the field—but none is a universal recipe.

What data analysts do beyond using tools

A data analyst’s work is not just writing queries or making charts. The job often starts with clarifying what someone needs to know, understanding the business or service involved, and deciding what analysis can answer the question. It ends with explaining the result in a way that helps people act on it.

A Wiley career-guide excerpt puts the mindset plainly: “A good data analyst needs to know how to think like an analyst.” The balance of technical work and communication varies by organization and industry. Some roles focus heavily on reporting and data preparation; others involve more stakeholder conversations, domain research, or recommendations. When considering a role, look at its expected outputs, tools, subject area, and contact with decision-makers—not just the job title.

Different backgrounds can lead to analytics work

There is no single starting point in the individual accounts available. Isaac D. Tucker-Rasbury says his interest began with curiosity and wanting to distinguish himself early in his career: “My journey into data analytics began from a place of curiosity and a need to distinguish myself early in my career, particularly during my time at Goldman Sachs.” He studied economics and Africana studies, taught himself SQL after missing a workplace analytics bootcamp, and later moved into an FP&A analyst role.

Another route came through journalism and communication. In a November 14, 2025 INFORMS Analytics Magazine op-ed, Laura McWhinney describes studying information technology with a focus on business data analytics before taking a data specialist role in early childhood education. Her account emphasizes defining the business problem before choosing an analytical approach.

Susan’s learner profile describes a different transition: she had conducted doctoral biological research, then joined a bootcamp and practiced spreadsheets, SQL, Tableau, data cleaning, and visualization while balancing study with work. The profile is published by the training provider, so it is best read as one learner’s experience, not an independent measure of the program or a promise of employment.

Build skills through practice, not a checklist

A practical foundation can start with spreadsheets and SQL, then add a visualization tool so you can present findings clearly. Isaac recommends: “Develop a firm grasp on the basic tools (ex. MS Excel & Power Query, SQL, DataViz (Power BI or Tableau), and Python)”. These are examples from his experience, not a requirement that every beginner learn the same stack or start with Python.

Tools mentioned across these accounts include Excel and Power Query, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Python, dbt, Visual Studio Code, and Git/GitHub. Their relevance depends on the role. For example, Tucker-Rasbury describes using Excel, SQL, Power BI, some Python, and research in his first full-time analyst role on an FP&A team, where he investigated prospective clients and business opportunities. Later, he describes SQL reporting and contributing to a data pipeline using SQL, dbt, Visual Studio Code, and Git/GitHub.

Learning sticks when you use tools to answer a real question. For a project, choose a dataset you can explain, state the question you are investigating, clean and analyze the data, and show the result in a chart or report. Then write a short explanation of what the result suggests, what it does not establish, and what someone might do next. That reasoning is as important as the software.

Make your work visible and invite feedback

A portfolio can show how you approach a problem, not just which tools you have opened. The learner account describes a comparative analysis project, while Tucker-Rasbury recommends making projects public and sharing them. A useful project page should make the question, data, method, and conclusion easy to follow; include limitations where they affect interpretation.

Feedback and collaboration help reveal gaps you may not notice alone. Susan’s account describes learning alongside others, while Tucker-Rasbury’s recommendations include networking, applications, and self-study as parts of a job search. A portfolio can make applied work visible, but these accounts do not establish that a portfolio—or any single course—secures a job.

Choose a learning route and role that fit your goals

When comparing courses or self-study plans, look for opportunities to practice spreadsheets, SQL, visualization, project work, and communication of findings. Ask whether you will receive feedback and whether you will have finished work you can explain. A bootcamp or certificate may provide structure, but the stories here do not show that either is a universal hiring requirement.

McWhinney discusses the Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) credential as a framework that helped her define business problems and choose analytical approaches. She also cautions: “Certifications don’t replace experience, but they can sharpen it.” Treat certification as one possible way to structure or demonstrate learning, not as a substitute for applied work.

For a first role, compare what the job actually asks you to do: the technical depth, stakeholder interaction, domain knowledge, tools, and decisions or services your analysis supports. The Wiley career-guide excerpt, “Is Data Analytics Right for Me?”, is one optional resource for exploring how analyst work can differ across companies and industries.

What this path taught me

Learning analytics is less about collecting tool names than becoming useful with data. Start with a question, practice the fundamentals on a real project, explain what you found, and keep refining your work through feedback. The career accounts here—from economics and finance, journalism and education, and biological research—show that people can arrive from different directions. They do not prove one route is easiest or guarantee a particular outcome, but they make clear that curiosity becomes practical skill through sustained, thoughtful work.
