Pera cocomerina is a rare heirloom pear closely associated with Ville di Montecoronaro in Italy’s Upper Savio Valley. Its small green fruit can have pink flesh reminiscent of watermelon, but it does not grow strictly within the town limits: documented trees and production extend into nearby parts of the valley. Because the pears are fragile and difficult to sell fresh, local conservation efforts and preserves help keep them in circulation.

What is pera cocomerina?

Pera cocomerina—also known locally as pera briaca or pera cocomera—is a small, oval heirloom pear. The Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity describes green-skinned fruit weighing about 20–60 grams each. Its nickname refers to watermelon: the flesh can be pink or red, with the late fruit showing especially intense color. Slow Food’s Presidium profile documents the names and characteristics.

Where does it grow?

Ville di Montecoronaro is the pear’s best-known center, in the Upper Savio Valley of Emilia-Romagna. The documented production area is broader than the town itself, extending through the valley and including parts of Verghereto and Bagno di Romagna. The Italian National Agricultural Biodiversity Registry also records related local presence elsewhere in the Romagnol Apennines, so “only grows in one town” is an oversimplification.

When is pera cocomerina harvested?

The harvest depends on the variety. Slow Food gives August–September for the early pear and October for the late one; the latter is known for particularly vivid pink flesh. These are the stated seasonal windows, not a guarantee of exact dates in every year.

  • Light: Thrives in full sun for best fruit production.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, loamy soil with good fertility.
  • Water: Provide consistent moisture, especially during the growing season.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to maintain shape and encourage airflow. Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth.
  • Pollination: Requires a pollinator such as LeConte or Orient for optimal fruit production.

Weather can shift the timing. In a Popular Science report published October 1, 2026, local growers described that season’s unusually hot, dry conditions as bringing the early pears to ripeness around 20 days sooner than usual and reducing the crop. That is an observation about one season, not a long-term climate measurement.

Why is it hard to buy the pears fresh?

The fruit is delicate and does not travel or keep easily, which makes it difficult to market fresh. Local producers therefore use it for jams, preserves, and liquor. Slow Food lists processed products as available throughout the year, unlike the short fresh-fruit season. The Slow Food profile describes these uses and the challenge of selling the fruit fresh.

How are growers keeping the pear alive?

The pear is listed as a Slow Food Presidium, a designation tied here to supporting its cultivation and local identity. Associazione Culturale Pro Ville collects harvests, works with growers, recovers neglected trees, and established an educational and experimental orchard. The aim is to sustain the fruit’s presence, rather than maximize harvest volume.

Popular Science’s 2026 report recounts how a thesis written by Manuela Biserni in 2001 drew agrarian researcher Isabella Dalla Ragione’s attention to the pear. It also reports that a historical local survey found fewer than 40 trees, and that the orchard later held 150–200 trees, some said to be about a century old. Those are reported historical and orchard counts, not a current census of all trees in the region.

Where can you find it?

Fresh pears and tastings are most likely to be encountered locally and during the harvest season. The regional tourism listing for the 2026 Cocomerina Pear Festival advertised tastings and direct sales for August 21–23, 2026; those dates have passed. For current products or a future event, check with Pro Ville or local organizers rather than assuming that the festival recurs on the same dates. The listing is available from I Percorsi del Savio / Riviera di Rimini.

  • The resulting pear trees can serve in home orchards for fruit production or function as ornamental trees in yards and landscapes, offering spring blossoms and autumn foliage.
  • Prior to sowing, it is recommended to mix the seeds with a slightly moist medium, place them in a sealed bag, and refrigerate (around 2-4°C) for 6-10 weeks. This simulates winter conditions to promote germination.
  • After cold treatment, sow the seeds in well-draining soil, covering them lightly. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide ample sunlight. Initial seedling growth may be slow.
  • Mature pear trees add structural height, spring blossoms, and shade to a garden, and can yield pears for consumption during the fruiting season.
